Lessons From James: You Can Handle Sickness
1. When you are sick, what do you do to ensure that you get better quickly? What about when (if) you have been very ill and concerned about your life?
2. Read James 5:14-16. What actions does the Bible call the sick person to do?
-Why is the responsibility with the sick person? Are there times when it may be necessary for the elders to take the initiative?
3. Do you think there are times when a sickness may be caused by sin? Are there times when a sickness is a disciplinary action initiated by God to bring repentance? Read 1 Corinthians 11:30-32.
4. What does the bible admonish elders to do when called upon by a sick person? What do you think this means? (keep in mind that oil was a common medicine in ancient times)
-What do you think the elders must talk about with the sick person?
5. Why do you think the elders are mentioned specifically as the people who are to perform this role? Read Hebrews 13:17.
6. Read Hebrews 12:4-11. Even if the sickness is not caused by sin, what should our attitude be towards sickness and hardship?
7. If an elder asked you, or a loved one who was sick, whether there was a contributing sin in their life, what would your response be? What sinful attitude could keep us from enjoying the healing that comes with reconciliation to God?
8. How does modern medicine fit in with your faith?
