"The Road to Emmaus"
(Luke 24:13-27)Study #7 – Jesus in Deuteronomy
1). The book of Deuteronomy is a review of the life of Moses just before his death. Recall in our study of Exodus we looked at some remarkable similarities between Moses and Christ, from their rescue during a mass killing at birth to their role as a mediator between man and God. Let’s consider some ways in which Moses falls short as a type of Christ.
a). Hebrews 3:5-6
b). Hebrews 4:15
c). Exodus 18:15-22 and Isaiah 53:12
d). Deuteronomy 34:4 and Hebrews 9:15
2). Read Deuteronomy 18:15-19. Verse 15 is clearly a prophecy of the Messiah. Explain how the following verses (especially vs. 19) speak to our response to Christ and the consequences of that response?
3). Deuteronomy describes "Cities of Refuge". These were safe havens for an individual to go if he had accidentally killed someone. In a City of Refuge, the dead person’s kinsmen were not allowed to avenge the death. We also have a place of refuge – Jesus (Matt 11:28).
a). In this spiritual metaphor, who is like the kinsman intent on having us destroyed for our sins?
b). In the Jewish tradition, there were posted on the highways men who could direct you to the city of refuge, running before you to show you the way. Who is called to point the way to Jesus to the world? How does this metaphor inspire, encourage or clarify for you our role as witnesses?
4). Read Deuteronomy 21:22-23. What do we learn about Jesus’ while He was on the cross? This is a sobering reminder of what Christ was willing to endure for us so that we would not have to.
