The Weight of Your Words

Measuring the impact of what you say.

8. Speaking Out For Number One

1. Just as cutting in line is a sign of self-priority, so are other signs of our culture. Can you think of any selfish trends that put self-advancement above the needs of others?

2. What attitudes, beliefs and feelings contribute to pride?

3. Read Exodus 10:1-6. What was Pharaoh’s problem? From your knowledge of the rest of the story, what did Pharaoh’s “problem” lead to in his life?

4. Read 1 Peter 5:6. What is some of the fruit of putting God in His rightful place in our lives?

5. Putting God in His rightful place also helps us to do what? Read John 13:34-35. What does it mean to do this?

6. Look up the following verses. Why do we sometimes find some of the following hard to do? Explore some of the reasons. Are any of them related to pride?

Eph 5:25-33 Eph 5:22-24

Eph 6:4 Eph 6:1

1 Pet 5:5 Eph 5:21

Heb 13:17 Rom 13:1

7. What is humility?

8. Some people can be proud of just how humble they are! What are some of the signs of false humility?

9. Can you think of any great Biblical examples of humility?

10. Holding firm to a specific viewpoint that isn’t necessarily very clear in the Bible can be a recipe for pride. Can you name some of the classics? How can we hold our view with humility?

11. Humility doesn’t mean putting ourselves down and obviously doesn’t mean boasting about ourselves or the views we hold. How do we find the balance between giving full glory to God and being positive about ourselves and our accomplishments?
