| Staying safe in the city |
| Security in Paris is not something I ever have had to worry about much,
and if you use common sense, I doubt you will either. Paris is a city of
2,000,000 people living inside the périphérique and a total
of 11,000,000 in the metropolitan area. When compared to cities in the
States of that size, its' crime is nil.
Crime overall throughout the city is minimal thanks to the great police force. Violent crime is actually rare. The only major crime for tourists to be worried about is pickpocketing...which is to be expected. Using common sense and taking precautions will keep you safe. Each main line Métro station has a police station and uniformed and plain-clothes officers in the Métro and on the streets. According to the latest information:
Below is a table of important emergency numbers:
If you need to go to the hospital while in Paris, your best bet would be to go to the American Hospital in Paris, which is actually in Neuilly-sur-Seine. They accepts private American insurance (Blue Cross/Blue Shield). It is in a suburb right by Paris down past the Arc de Triomphe. You can use the Métro if you want. The address of the hospital is: l'Hopital Américain de Paris
