The Paris Guide
Exploring Montparnasse

Montparnasse is a little more dirty, but the prices a little lower. The area around the Tour Montparnasse, the only skyscraper within the city limits, is packed with shops of all kinds and movie theaters. Many reasonably priced jewelery stores can be found on Rue de Rennes which runs north out of the Place du 18 Juin 1940.
  • The Tour Montparnasse is the second tallest building in all of Europe. There is a bar, restaurant, and observatory on the 56th floor with great views of the city.
  • The square's name Place du 18 Juin 1940 comes from the date of General de Gaulle's broadcast for German resistance.
  • Opened in 1824, the Cimetiere Montparnasse is now the resting place for many famous Parisiens including Andre Citroen, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Charles Baudelaire, and Samuel Beckett.
  • If you have a hankering for some American food and an American atmosphere but refuse to go to a McDonald's, check out the Mustang Cafe.  It is a classic American-style restautant with happy hour from 4-8 as well.  This place is always filled with English-speaking people.
