The Paris Guide
Exploring Montmartre

Another eclectic area full of people from everywhere who do everything.  Here there are street markets selling cheap clothes, old strip clubs frequented by soldiers during the wars, and beautiful parks and views.  Montmartre is a hill on the north side of Paris and from here the entire city can be seen below.
  • Sacre Coeur is a Romano-Byzantine church built from 1875 to 1914.  The Jesuits declared themselves as such on the steps here to create the Society of Jesus.
  • Many famous poets, musicians, and other artful people have been buried at the Cimetiere de Montmartre.
  • The Moulin Rouge was built in 1885 and made a dance hall in 1900.  It is known for the high kicking dancers of the early 20th century.
  • The highest point in Paris is at the Place du Tertre and is associated with artists who love to paint here.  It is always packed with tourists.
The Montmartre area is great as long as you get away from the overly touristy parts for a while.  There are numerous stores selling cheap souvenirs, but there are some beautifully quaint parts and these definitely deserve a visit.  The area is quiet and can be enjoyed by taking a leisurely walk down the narrow streets.
