The Paris Guide
Exploring around the Louvre

The area around Le Louvre is very expensive. Nearly everything around here is pricey because there are a lot of tourists and the people who tend to live and work here are well off. Most of the major sights here are found in the 1st Arrondisement.
  • Le Louvre is the most spectacular museum in Paris. It is immense and can never be covered in one visit. Built by French Kings through the ages it is now home to a wonderful collection of art ranging from the Mona Lisa to the Venus de Milo.
  • The gardens located adjacent to Le Louvre are know as the Tuileries. It was designed by Le Notre under Louis XIV and are a great place to wander through. They are home to festivals in the summertime and enough space to always leave a quiet spot to be found.
  • Running along side Le Louvre and Tuileries is the Rue de Rivoli. There are numerous tourist shops here selling cheap trinkets, but one can also find expensive clothiers, bookstores, and restaurants.
  • The Place de la Concorde is at the end of all this and is centered around an obelisk from Luxor. It now stands where the guillotine killed 1,119 people over two and a half years.
  • The Ritz Hotel is located in the Place Vendome. There are also many expensive shops and jewelery stores.
  • The Palais Royal is a large government building which now houses the Council of State and the Constitutional Council.
  • France's national theater, the Comedie Francaise where Moliere and his players started performing is a great place to see famous pieces performed.
