Clearly the Eiffel Tower is the main focal point of this area, but
around it are many other great sights to see. The entire area is on an
impressive scale. There are many large buildings and even residences of
numerous wealthy citizens of Paris.
-
The Eiffel Tower is not to be missed. It can be seen from all over
the city, but up close and in person, it is so much more incredible. It
truly is a fantastic piece of work and as a tourist in the city, you must
go and check it out. Built for the Universal Exibition of 1889, it
was only intended to be a temporary structure on the skyline. It
was actually the tallest building in the world until the Empire State Building
came along in 1931.
-
On the first level there is a post office and a small museum telling the
story of the Tower.
-
The Jules Verne restaurant offers great views and food from the second
level.
-
At the third and final level is the observation gallery 899 feet above
ground.
-
Directly across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower is the Palais de Chaillot
which offers the best views of the Tower in the city. The building
is up on a hill and many movies have had scenes filmed from the spot inbetween
the two wings, you will recognize it immediately. Inside is a museum
dedicated to films and there is a theater in the Palais.
-
The Champ-de-Mars is great if you are not into the whole high, metal
structure thing or even if you are. No matter what, take a leisurely stroll
through this park beneath and next to the Eiffel Tower because it offers
amazing views of the Eiffel Tower and the Palais de Chaillot.
-
The Ecole Militaire, while not able to be seen by the common folk,
is located at the opposite end of the Champ-de-Mars from the Eiffel Tower.
It was founded in 1751 by Louis XV to educate the children of officers
in the military.
-
Invalides is the second most awe inspiring sight to see in the area
next to the Eiffel Tower. It contains the tomb of Napoleon in the Dome
Church and the Musee de l'Armee is the largest war/military museum in the
world! There is lots to see and the building and grounds are gorgeous.
-
Right on the Seine across from the Place de la Concorde lies the Palais
Bourbon, which is where the Assemble Nationale holds its sessions.
