The Paris Guide
Exploring the Ile de la Cité

The Ile de la Cité is the most historical location in all of Paris because it was here that Paris was first founded. The entire island is loaded with historical buildings. Listed below are the sights that I feel are worth seeing...in no particular order.
  • Pont Neuf is the bridge at the northwestern tip of the island and actually just barely touches it. The name means "new bridge" because when it was built (1578-1607) it was the first of its kind to not have residences built on it. Today it is the oldest bridge in the city.
  • Place Dauphine is right by the Pont Neuf and is a very old square. The buildings around it are among the oldest in the city. It is very pretty and quaint.
  • The Concierge was a prison during the Revolution and is now open for tours. You can see where Marie Antoinette lived out her final days.
  • The Palais de Justice take up the entire rest of this end of the island stretching from one side to the other. This is where the courts and the heart of the French justice reside.
  • Marché aux Fleurs et Oiseux is an amazingly big flower market and you can find just about everything here.
  • Hotel Dieu is a city hospital...and one of the oldest and largest. It is very masive and somewhat imposing.
  • Saint Chapelle is a cathedral that cannot be missed. Its' beauty is assounding. The walls seem to be nothing but stained glass. This small cathedral is absolutely fabulous
  • Notre Dame is the most well known cathedral. It is fabulous and you must take a step in to see why is it so well known. The history is rich. If you have time, climb up the stairs to the top of the north tower and you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the city!
  • The Square du Jean XXIII is right behind Notre Dame and there is a great view of the cathedral from here. All the flying buttresses are visible.
Most places on the Ile de la Cité can be seen quickly because they are all so close together, even though there are so many. One bonus it to cross the Seine to the south and walk along the quais down by the river. You get some incredible views of the island and Notre Dame. Be sure to take a visit to this island.
