The Paris Guide
Exploring the Bastille area

This is a fantastic place to be in the evening if you are looking for entertainment and a fun time because there are many clubs, bars, and restaurants here. In recent years the area has become more fashionable and chic and many of the surrounding streets now are home to a lively night life.
  • The most striking feature of the area is the Opera de Paris Bastille. It is one of the most modern and controversial opera houses in Europe. Designed by Carlos Ott's, the house is a masterpiece of technology. It seats 2700 and has five moveable stages.
  • Place de la Bastille is located in the center of the area which takes its name from the prison by the same name which once stood here. It was stormed on July 14, 1789 and nothing remains except the column now erected in its place.
  • Heading south out of the Place is Boulevard Henri IV.  This is a lovely, wide, tree-lined street that crosses the Ile de St. Louis and is in line with the Pantheon on the other side of the Seine, which sits up on a hill.
