Getting around the city |
|
The Metro is far and
away the best way to get around quickly. But when it comes toexploring,
walking is the way to go. There is no reason to
ever step foot in a taxi or car while you arethere. Walking allows you to see
so much more of the city than the monuments. The real Paris is discovered when
least expecting it. Walking gives youthe opportunity to see, feel, smell, and
taste everything the city hasto offer! And by all means, don't forget your
camera...you may need itwhen you're not expecting to. The city layout is not
nearly as confusing as it may seem when glancing at a map. On foot, there are
no obstacles. Taking a map with you and just guessing where to go is part of
the fun. You can discover so many neatplaces off the beaten path, so don't
stick to the major avenues and boulevards.Sometimes, take the long
route. My favorite maps are those publishedby Michelin, a French
company based right in Paris that also makes tires. They are abolutely
great! Every little detail is included withoutadding clutter.
They are available at nearly every bookstore. The maps included with
guidebooks can be all right, but they often onlyinclude tourist areas.
A map with every with every street is recommendedbecause there are thousands
of them. For a list of great
walks to take around the city go to my page on walks. I have compiled
a list of the best walks which go by some of the major sights of the city. |
