Down at the Pier
by Hugo Elise

Hugo Elises second novel is a clever and eloquent depiction of a failing friendship between two aging and self-proclaimed bohemians. Their shared spotted past finally catches up with them while attending a performance of The Whos Quadraphenia.

This is Hugo Elises second publication with Pariah Press. Her first novel, That Time When You Left was shortlisted for the Giller Prize and nominated for the Booker. Born in Victoria, she received a B.A. from Simon Fraser and an M.A. in Creative Writing from The University of Southern California at Berkley. She is currently homeless and circumnavigating the world.

A shocking look at friendship and aging that reads like a kick in the teeth. Ouch!. (Jane Rothschild, Read)

When that Elise spins her prose, she stops traffic I was brought to a place I vaguely remembered without ever having been there. Strange!(Izzy Emmannuel, Harpers)

Down by the Pier does what many novels have tried to do in vain: that is, elevate the reader fully into the world of the story, oblivious to all else. A great sophomore success! (Hetty Cook, Iqaluit Open Press)

Excerpt from Down At The Pier

Lila nodded. Smiths hand dove into his pocket, returning with pastrami. Her eyes widened when he squeezed her love handles and proceeded to stuff her mouth with the cold meat. He stuck his mucky fingers so far in she could almost taste the dirt under his nails. Sweeping his pocket once again he retrieved a roll of duct tape, which he pulled tight over her mouth, to keep her real quiet, just like he said. He grabbed her wrists, pushed her head down and made her sit on the floor. Then he tied her to the cupboard, Lilas hands turning blue behind her back.
