This model was commisioned by COMEX who needed a deep water watch that would not explode upon decompression after a deep dive.
The Helium gas escape valve is unique to the Sea Dweller in the Rolex range.
In my oppinion the Sea Dweller model is the ultimate Rolex to own. It summerises completely what a Rolex was truly all about.
Today however that mantel seems to have been taken over by the Gold President, made popular by the flood of cheap fakes flying around.
The Sea Dweller is the only model with no variants or options, with this watch you just get plain old black on steel.
It is the biggest, the strongest, most waterproof, most useable/unuseable watch they make, and if ever a suit is designed to go deep enough the only Rolex you can wear whilst diving the SS Titanic!
