"Demystifying Mikvah" - Rabbi Joshua Heller

The Mikvah (or ritual bath) has long been a fixture of traditional Jewish life, but has fallen into disuse in some sectors of the Jewish community.  Some only knew it as part of the conversion process, but many are now rediscovering or even reenvisioning this ritual practice.  It is enjoying a resurgence in its traditional role as part of marital life, and also as the focus for modern rituals of healing and/or rebirth which include men and women.  Come peel away the mystery of Mikvah- see one close up, explore the history and theory behind its use, and learn how Jews across the spectrum of belief and observance are finding deeper meaning in it, from its most traditional uses to feminists who are seeking to “take the ick out of mikvah."

Rabbi Joshua Heller serves as the spiritual leader of Congregation B'nai Torah in Sandy Springs.  In addition to the usual roles as rabbi of the congregation, he supervises all of the ritual functions of the Mikvah at B'nai Torah.  This pool for ritual immersion is the only facility of its type in the Atlanta area that is open to groups from all streams of Judaism.  Rabbi Heller has undertaken extensive study of both the technical details of the mikvah's construction and maintenance, and the spiritual and psychological aspects of its usage.  Rabbi Heller is a ninth generation rabbi.  Before coming to Atlanta, he served as Director of Distance Learning and Educational Technology at JTS, bringing Jewish learning to over 20,000 people each week, and from 2001-2004 he served as the rabbi of “The Downtown Synagogue" -the synagogue closest to the site of the World Trade Center.
