Jedi Formula Honda single seaters are made in Wellingborough, Northampton, England by John Corbyn�s Jedi Racing Cars company.
The 600 cc 100 bhp DOHC four cylinder water-cooled Honda CBR600 engines may not be modified, so there is no expensive horsepower race. The rev to 13,000 rpm and are mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox that is ideal for karting graduates. They race on Avon tyres.
The cars must weigh a post-race minimum of 370 kg with driver, accelerate to 60 mph from rest in 3.6s, and are capable of 130 mph.
The racing is fast and furious, but safe. At Mallory Park in August 2001 the top seven cars in qualifying were separated by only 0.8s. In the race there was more overtaking than in the previous three Grands Prix, and the top five finishers were only 6.5s apart after 18 laps.
The Jedi Formula Honda �pocket rockets� are as quick as the far more expensive Formula Ford Zetecs that race in the prestigious Slick 50 Championship from which champions of the future traditionally spring, and are around three seconds a lap faster than Formula Zip which
is touted as another starter formula for karting graduates. They are, however, closer in concept and spirit to Formula BMW, the motorcycle-engined racers run by the Bavarian motor manufacturer.
In kit form new cars cost as little as �8000, while very competitive secondhand cars can be purchased for a similar amount. A season of 16 races costs less than �20,000.
