THE PRISON OF YOUR EYES

Like a stranger, like a lover
Like a father to a child
Like a sister to a brother
Many friends on me have smiled

But like the painter to the picture
Like the potter to the clay
Like the penman to the paper
Like the hunter to the prey

They seemed to try to find me
That they failed is no surprise
For they only sought to bind me
In the prison of their eyes

Now like a lark or like a lady
Like a swan upon the stream
Like a woodland green and shady
Images of you I dream

As the rhythm to the drummer
Or the nightfall to the dew
As the swallow to the summer
So to me my love are you

The world cannot constrain you
Your heart is open to the skies
But see how I try to chain you
In the prison of my eyes!

So like a new lamb to the slaughter
Like a martyr to the cause
Like a drowning man to water
Like a soldier to the wars

I fill your expectations
As the raindrops fill the streams
Til your rivers fill the oceans
Of my being with your dreams

And your dreams at last will free me
From dull mirrors of surmise -
Though I lose myself to be me
In the prison of your eyes.
