MY TUTORING EXPERIENCE

Tutoring Japanese Language and Culture in Battle Creek, Michigan (January 1998-Now)

Since 1998, I have been tutoring American girls Japanese Language and Culture in Battle Creek. They are in 6th grade this year and are very active in learning Japanese language and culture as well as joining girls scout, performing in plays, and playing sports. I enjoy so much in seeing them grow.

Theda Yarnell, a very sensitive and caring girl, is interested in pokemon and other Japanese animation characters. She is very good at speaking Japanese and knows many words in Japanese.

Melanie Decker, a very hardworking and studious girl, is interested in dancing to music and listening to DMX and Nelly. She is very good at writing Japanese and making sentences in Japanese.

Krissy Anderson, a very funny and active girl, is interested in fashion and sports. She has just started taking my lessons this fall but is having time conflict with her sports schedule on Saturdays recently.

We had a great Christmas Party at Theda's last year!!

November Schedule for Theda and Melanie:

December 1st, Saturday, CANCELLED again...

I will have to cancel our lesson this Saturday too due to my preparation for Japanese Cultural Event 2001 on Sunday.

November Schedule for Theda and Melanie:

November 24th, Saturday, CANCELLED

We will not meet this Saturday due to Thanksgiving Holiday. Happy Thanksgiving! We don't have this holiday in Japan, but we call the day, "Kansha-sai." "Kansha" means "to thank," and "sai" means "festival."

November Schedule for Theda and Melanie:

November 17th, Saturday, at 2-3:15pm in Willard Library

We are going to continue on learning how to make questions using NAN/NANI (what), ITSU (when), DOKO (where), DARE (who), DOU/IKAGA (how), NAZE (why), IKUTSU (how many), and IKURA (how much). We will especially focus on NAN/NANI for this time. You will be introduced to 5 kinds of questioning sentences using NAN.

NAN JI DESU KA? (What time is it?)

NAN SAI DESU KA? (How old are you?)

NAN GATSU DESU KA? (What month is it?)

NAN NICHI DESU KA? (What date is it?)

NAN YOUBI DESU KA? (What day is it?)

We will definitely go over how to count in Japanese again. We will also learn how to say days (Monday to Sunday). You will need to memorize many new words in Japanese, but at the same time, we will be moving forward slowly.

There were 3 new words you learned last time:

KURUMA (car/cars)

KI (tree/trees)

HA (leaf/leaves)

What 3 new words would you like to learn this time?

See you on Saturday!!
