A DAY-BY-DAY LESSON PLANS
Title: Dear Diary�c
Grade Level: 9th – 12th
[Week 1]
DAY 1 (M)
Goal: To introduce the writing project to students.
Activities: Students will be introduced to the book, The Diary of Latoya Hunter, and will start to read it. Handouts for this unit will be distributed at this time.
DAY 2 (T)
Goal: To give students a chance to think about themselves and to write about it.
Activities: Students will be thinking about themselves by comparing themselves with Latoya. The first entry of their diary will be completed in this lesson by answering the following questions: Who are you? What kind of person are you? What do you like to do?
DAY 3 (W)
Goal: To give students a chance to think about their school, friends, and teachers and to write about them.
Activities: Students will be thinking about their school, friends, and teachers by comparing them with Latoya�fs. The second entry of their diary will be completed in this lesson by answering the following questions: What do you think about your school? Who are your good friends? What is a �gfriendship�h to you? What do you think about �gopposite gender friends�h? Who is your favorite teacher? Why do you like the teacher?
DAY 4 (R)
Goal: To give students a chance to think about their parents/guardians and to write about them.
Activities: Students will be thinking about their parents/guardians by comparing them with Latoya�fs. The third entry of their diary will be completed in this lesson by answering the following questions: What do you like about your parents/guardians? How is a relationship between you and them? What do you think will happen if they were not around you?
DAY 5 (F)
Goal: To give students a chance to think about their family relationships and to write about it.
Activities: Students will be thinking about their family relationships by comparing them with Latoya�fs. The fourth entry of their diary will be completed in this lesson by answering the following questions: Who is your closest family member? How often do you see your family members? How is a relationship between you and your family?
[Week 2]
DAY 6 (M)
Goal: To give students a chance to think about their neighborhood/environment and to write about it.
Activities: Students will be thinking about their neighborhood/environment by comparing it with Latoya�fs. The fifth entry of their diary will be completed in this lesson by following questions: Are you close to your neighbors? How do you feel about your neighborhood? Do you feel safe when you walk on your street? How is your home environment?
DAY 7 (T)
Goal: To give students a chance to think about their love/boyfriend/girlfriend and to write about it.
Activities: Students will be thinking about their love/boyfriend/girlfriend by comparing it /him/her with Latoya�fs. The sixth entry of their diary will be completed in this lesson by answering the following questions: Why do you like him/her? How do you want him/her to think about you? What is the relationship like? How do you act in front of him/her?
DAY 8 (W)
Goal: To give students a chance to think about their heritage/background and to write about it.
Activities: Students will be thinking about their heritage/background by comparing it with Latoya�fs. The seventh entry of their diary will be completed in this lesson by answering the following questions: What do you know about your heritage/background? Do you celebrate your heritage? Would you like to visit/go back to your heritage/country? Why or why not?
DAY 9 (R)
Goal: To give students a chance to think about their dreams/future image and to write about them/it.
Activities: Students will be thinking about their dreams/future image by comparing them/it with Latoya�fs. The last entry of their diary will be completed in this lesson by answering the following questions: What do you want to do when you graduate from the school? What do you want to be when you grow up? What is happening to you after 10~20 years?
DAY 10 (F)
Goal: To give students a chance to pick one entry from the diary that they can be confident to share it with the class.
Activities: Students will revise all entries from their diary briefly. They will start thinking about revising and expanding an entry into an article for their second final product, class newsletter.
[Week 3]
DAY 11 (M)
Goal: To organize all the diary entries into a personal box and to bury it outside in the school yard.
Activities: Students will be organizing all the diary entries (8) in their own box and bury it outside in the schoolyard. They will be including their picture in the box as well.
DAY 12 (T)
Goal: To start feeling more confident about the entry that they have picked to develop and revise. To have a short conference with the teacher.
Activities: They will actually start developing and revising the diary entry for class newsletter article. Each student will be having a short conference with the teacher to discuss the entry they have picked to revise and expand.
DAY 13 (W)
Goal: To give students a chance to give feedbacks to their peers on their articles (individual final product).
Activities: They will be peer-reviewing each other. They will fill in a response guide each time to give others some feedbacks.
DAY 14 (R)
Goal: To start putting all articles together for the class newsletter (class final product). To discuss how the newsletter should look like as a class.
Activities: They will participate in a discussion on how to make a class newsletter. They will also print out their final draft in this lesson.
DAY 15 (F)
Goal: To work on finishing the final product as a class. To give the teacher their class newsletter draft by the end of the class time.
Activities: They will work together to finish the final product. They will have to turn it in to the teacher by the end of the class time so that the teacher can make copies for all classmates by next Monday to complete the unit.
