PROJECT HANDOUT
Title: Dear Diary�c
Grade Level: 9th – 12th
Overview:
This project will take approximately three weeks.
In the first part of this unit, you will be reading The Diary of Latoya Hunter and compare her daily life and situation with yours by keeping your own diary. The audience for your writings is yourself in the future. There will be a total of eight entries in your diary. You will revise them and bury your diary in a box outside.
In the second part of this unit, you will be picking one entry from your diary to revise and expand for your final product. The final product is to write an article for the class newsletter.
Goal:
Your main goal for this project is:
To understand that keeping a diary is an effective and meaningful way to see yourself.

Final Products:
There are two major final products:
1) Eight Diary Entries in a Box: You will be keeping your eight entries of diary in a personal box. You will be burying it outside in our schoolyard as one of your final products.
2) Class Newsletter Article: You will be focusing on an entry from your diary after finishing the first product. Then you will revise and expand it into a newsletter article for your second final product of this unit.
Expectations:
You are expected to participate actively during this unit by reading the book, participating in discussions, writing diary entries, revising writings, and helping your peers.
Evaluation:
Attendance is the most important evaluation in this unit. You will receive points for just coming to class and following the expectations. The second major evaluation will be on your two major final products.
