MY APPLICATION FOR TEACHING INTERNSHIP
Question #1) Identify any school activities (e.g., clubs, organizations, sports) you would like to assist in supervising, directing, or coaching. (Indicate those activities in which you have had experience and the nature/extent of that experience.)
I would like to coach girl's tennis, softball, soccer, or track and field teams to support each player's mental and physical development. I helped to coach girl's JV tennis team during my pre-internship. I have played all these sports and served as team captain in all of them. I have won many tournaments in all these sports too. Also, I would like to supervise foreign language or culturally focused clubs. I joined a Japanese language and culture club during my pre-internship, and most of all, I am Japanese, and my minor is Chinese.
Question #2) List any other experiences you have had working with children or youth. (Be sure to include your pre-internship field experiences.)
I completed my pre-internship at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek (the same high school where I received my diploma in 1997 - I have high school diplomas from both an American and a Japanese high schools). In the English classroom, I gave one mini-lesson for two classes introducing students to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I also worked with those who needed extra help with grammar. In the Japanese classroom, I gave two mini-lessons for three classes on Japanese popular culture epecially on music. As my job on weekends, I have been tutoring three American elementary school students for more than two years now in Japanese. I have worked with English as a second language students, and I very much enjoyed and hope to support such students during my internship.
Question #3) Identify your strengths and weaknesses and provide any other information you feel would be helpful to a prospective coorperating/mentor teacher.
My first strength is that I am good at getting along with new people. I have had many different roommates - two white Americans, one African American, one Chinese, one Thai, and one Japanese - and enjoy knowing them and learning about their backgrounds. My second strength is that I am a hard working person. I always try my best at everything and to improve myself. I also like the challenge of many new things such as learning a third language, planning a Japanese cultural event in Battle Creek, and creating webpages on internet. My third strength is that I have a sense of humor. It is just a skill I was born with. I will never run away from difficulties, but I know how to get through them with my sense of humor. My one and big weakness is that I have less English vocabulary and occasional language usage questions than the average American person. However, I have lived and attended schools and college in the United States for almost ten years and have been told by my English professors that my English is appropriate for teaching secondary school.
Question #4) Indicate the grade level/age group with which you would like to work and the experiences you hope to have during your internship (be specific).
I would like to work with high school underclassmen (9th and 10th grades) who are "at-risk" in English or who are learning English as a second language. I hope to teach them the attraction, joy, and importance of the English language, in part through my own experiences of learning English as a second language.
