Zeroscape
Zeroscape is one of the
weirdest and most special bands I've listened to, because they mix a plethora
of elements and genres and yet they manage to create a homogeneous and
unique result that bears their seal. This is completely natural if you
ask me since they come from Canada, a land with renowned musicians, who
give birth to weird and superb music. So, here we have Binski the band's
mainman answering our questions...
1. HELLO! HOW ARE YOU? LET’S START THE INTERVIEW
BY TELLING US WHEN YOU FORMED ZEROSCAPE. HOW MANY DEMOS HAVE YOU RELEASED
AND HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO COMPLETE YOUR NEW ALBUM?
Zeroscape was formed in 2001 we were originally
a 5 piece but then eventually kicked out the 2nd guitarist in 2004, we
completed 3 EP’s as a 5 piece and 2 full lengths as a 4 piece. The new
album was basically written while on tour on acoustic guitars, when we
returned home from a 6mth 100 show independent tour of Europe we went immediately
to work. “…IF THIS IS THE END I WILL”, was recorded mixed and mastered
in just a few months and we were on the road again even before its release
date.
2. “...AND IF THIS IS THE END I WILL” CONTAINS
11 COMPOSITIONS. WHICH ONE OF THOSE WAS THE EASIEST ONE TO WRITE AND WHICH
ONE TOOK YOU MOST AND WHY?
“Till death do us” fell together pretty easy
for us, sometimes the songs just do that but “Outnumbered” was quite a
bit of work, it’s kinda funny too because both songs had no lyrics until
the last few days of tracking.
3. YOUR SOUND IS VERY ORIGINAL AND WEIRD. YOU
INCLUDE MANY INFLUENCES FROM ROCK TO REGGAE AND SOUL. HOW DO YOU MANAGE
TO COMBINE ALL THESE DIFFERENT THINGS?
We all have different influences of music
and while at home or driving around we all listen to different things but
somehow we manage to come together and create music we all enjoy.
-HOW DO PEOPLE REACT WHEN THEY LISTEN TO YOUR
SOUND FOR THE FIRST TIME?
Some go crazy and others are on a high, the
reaction from our acoustic shows being plugged out is totally different
too.
4. TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, THE WAY YOU STRUCTURE
YOUR SONGS REMINDED ME A BIT OF SYSTEM OF A DOWN, WITHOUT ME IMPLYING THAT
YOU COPY THEM. DO YOU AGREE WITH THAT? WHICH OTHER MUSICIANS AND BANDS
HAVE INFLUENCED YOU?
I’ve heard that a few times now, we all think
SOD is an amazing band, and definitely won’t deny that their influence
could have leaked into our own music. Reggae artists Sizzla and Bob Marley
definitely influence me from a vocal point. Slayer, Killswitch, ELP, all
come into play too musically I’m sure.
5. “...AND IF THIS IS THE END I WILL” IS A STRANGE
TITLE FOR YOUR ALBUM. A TITLE THAT PUTS YOU IN DEEP THOUGHTS AND SOUNDS
MYSTERIOUS. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS TITLE AND WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SAY WITH
IT?
Well the title is also the last track on the
album, the lyrics can be taken a lot of ways. We had just returned home
from 6mths of touring, we ate, looked, and smelt like shit. Even though
the road was an amazing experience, we had to return back home to reality
and when it hit it hit hard so with this being one of the 1st tracks we
were writing it basically became a cry of 4 brother souls. As for what
we want to say with it I really don’t think the answer has come yet.
6. WHO WRITES THE LYRICS IN THE BAND? WHAT KIND
OF THEMES GIVE YOU INSPIRATION TO WRITE ABOUT?
That would be me “Binski”, the music is the
first inspiration which sets the mood and allows the lyrics to come through.
Usually it’s whatever I’m going through or what is going on around me,
I can reflect back to the head space I was in, in any of the lyrics I’ve
ever written and that’s what happens to me on stage or in the studio.
7. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED UNDER WHICH CIRCUMSTANCES
YOU BECOME MORE CREATIVE AS A MUSICIANS?
I think the harder life gets and the more
struggle we go through feeds our music because it’s the only release we
have.
8. YOU ARE FROM CANADA, A COUNTRY THAT DOESN’T
HAVE A HUGE HARD ROCK/HEAVY METAL SCENE AS OTHER COUNTRIES, BUT MOST OF
THE BANDS THAT COME FROM THERE HAVE SOMETHING ORIGINAL IN THEIR SOUND.
HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THAT? IS IT SOMETHING IN THE WATER OF CANADA PERHAPS?

NEW ALBUM WHICH ONE MADE YOU THINK THAT THE REVIEWER DIDN’T ACTUALLY LISTEN
TO YOUR CD OR DIDN’T HAVE A CLUE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE PLAYING?
I can’t remember the name of the site but
this guy was just an idiot. From the first note on the album you
could tell he was completely turned off by the indifference we have in
our music and closed his ears. Then he stabbed at the label, he was just
a clown, but oh well not everyone is gonna take the time to listen but
fuck em who cares!
11. ON YOUR SITE I SAW THAT YOUR BASSIST MC NIZZOW
LEFT THE BAND. WHICH WERE THE REASONS? IF SOMEONE IS INTERESTED FOR THE
PLACE, HOW CAN HE/SHE CONTACT YOU?
We just grew apart as people and friends and
to the point where making music as this line up became STRESS, whenever
we jammed as 3 the feeling was amazing and as 4 it wasn’t so someone
had to go. So weather he left or we left doesn’t matter. We are pretty
excited to bring new fresh blood into this and plan on not missing a beat.

12. ARE YOU WORKING ON A NEW MATERIAL? WHEN DO
YOU PLAN TO RELEASE YOUR NEXT ALBUM?
Oh man! The new album I promise is gonna be
our best so far, we are writing at the moment and the energy in the music
is unbelievable, however there is no rush for this album so we are planning
to head into the studio with a lot of extra tracks so we can weed em out
from there, and as for production its gonna be world class. As for
when I can see it released for next Fall.
13. IF YOUR MUSIC WERE EMOTIONS, WHAT WOULD IT
BE? IF IT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
If it was an emotion the face would be strong
and confident, and if it were a painting it would show a lot of comfortable
as well as aggressive colours.
14. WHAT’S THE IDEAL TITLE THAT COULD SUM UP THE
WHOLE ZEROSCAPE ESSENCE?
The beginning of something new.
