Virus
Crawl
Virus Crawl is an extraordinary
band and I don't say that only musically speaking, but taking into consideration
everything necessary to label a release as unique and superb! So, words
are not enough and in fact you'd better read this interview, find out about
Virus Crawl and then visit their website and order "Of The Same" at once!
Read below what Adem and Palzy told us about the band and not only, have
a laugh, think and get crazy!!!!
1. I SUPPOSE YOU’VE ALREADY READ MY REVIEW,
SO YOU KNOW WHAT I THINK OF YOUR MUSIC. THE DIFFICULT PART FOR ME WAS TO
LABEL IT SO THE PEOPLE COULD UNDERSTAND WHAT KIND OF MUSIC YOU PLAY. YOUR
MUSIC IS MODERN AND YET IT HAS MANY CLASSIC TINGES WITHIN IT. SO, I’M CURIOUS
TO KNOW HOW YOU LABEL IT.
PALZY: Neo-Schizo-Rock.
ADEM: I've always answered Metal/Punk/Rock,
being it has a lot of those elements in it, although Metal these days is
a very broad term.
2. IF YOU WERE ASKED TO WRITE A REVIEW FOR “OF
THE SAME”, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TRYING TO BE AS OBJECTIVE AS POSSIBLE? IN
OTHER WORDS, WHY SHOULD THE METALLERS CHECK YOU OUT? WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO
OFFER TO THEM?
ADEM: The angle I would mainly push would
be, this music is an example of a band creating a sound and style that
is new, familiar yet sounds like nothing else, as opposed to so many other
bands reverting to a back catalogue of past trends rather than move forward.
PALZY: It's fucking different, come and get
us, lets see if you agree.
3. GIVE US SOME INFO ON YOUR RECORDING SESSIONS.
ALTHOUGH THIS IS A SELF FINANCED RELEASE YOU HAVE MANAGED TO CREATE A GREAT
AND CLEAR SOUND. DID YOU USE ANY HELP OR DO YOU HAVE PAST EXPERIENCE? ARE
YOU SATISFIED BY THE FINAL RESULT OR IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO CHANGE?
ADEM: Since this EP, I've learned a lot more
about getting a bigger rounder sound from recordings via p/c, although
I'm happy with the final product, the drums were recorded then mixed to
one mono track (of which was unavoidable at the time) so there was no room
to move with pans/rvb or separate eq'ing. With our latest recordings the
drums are much more open and dynamic in their production, thank fuck.
PALZY: I wouldn't change a thing, for a back
yard job I'm pretty happy with it. But it definitely pales in comparison
to its sequel.
4. I LOVED THE VOCALS, BOTH THE HARSH AND THE
CLEAN ONES. DO YOU INTERPRET ROLES? IF YES, WHAT DO THE CLEAN AND WHAT
DO THE BRUTAL VOCALS STAND FOR IN YOUR MUSIC? WHAT DO THEY SYMBOLIZE?
PALZY: I don't think so, it’s just the way
we sing. I'm the harsh one. Years of screaming Metallica and Slayer covers
I think.
ADEM: In some of the newer stuff we experiment
with the idea of the two contrasting voices being the infamous "good and
evil" voices of the conscience but for the most part I bring on the melodic
side and Palzy pushes the anger.
PALZY: Yeah, I can sound like a choir girl
if really necessary and Adem can sound like he came direct from Satan’s
left nut if required.
5. YOUR MUSIC IS INNOVATIVE AND UNIQUE. HOW DIFFICULT
IS IT FOR YOU TO COMPOSE SUCH MUSIC IN A WORN OUT METAL SCENE AND IN TIMES
THAT MOST PEOPLE CLAIM THAT EVERYTHING HAS ALREADY BEING PLAYED?
ADEM: We're not the quickest song writers..
tha’ts for sure.. ha ha. If you apply yourself you always find something
new, at the end of the day all rock bands plug their guitar in and hit
drums so a lot of options have been exhausted but not all of them, you
just have keep taking a step back every now 'n again when writing and think
how you could skew your creation, a lot of the time from an art point of
view as opposed to a song writing one.
PALZY: The only difficult part is how long
it takes to finish a song. We both write, sing, drum, play guitar and piano,
so there is a lot ideas around when we're writing and also a lot of who
knows best... ha..ha, but it always works in the end.
6. WHAT’S THE BEST AND WHAT’S THE WORST PART IN
YOUR MUSIC, ACCORDING TO YOU? ARE THERE ANY THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO IMPROVE
IN THE FUTURE?
ADEM: With writing and recording it's easy
to get ahead of yourself and go overboard, and find yourself saying "How
the fuck am I going to drum and sing to this bit?" I love playing live
but, when it comes to things I'd like to improve I'd say getting fitter
I suppose, it just doesn't work putting 100% into drumming and 100% into
singing, I don't have 200% in me..ha..ha
PALZY: The best part is finishing a song and
the worst part is not being able to finishing a song, as for future improvements,
to finish more songs quicker.
7. HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF ADDING ANY NEW ELEMENTS
OR EXPERIMENTING WITH YOUR SOUND? IF YES, WHAT KIND OF SOUNDS/IDEAS WOULD
YOU LIKE TO ADD?
PALZY: I've got a little keyboard nailed to
my flying V, so I pretty much play 2 instruments at once plus vocals. That’s
enough experimentation for me.
ADEM: I'd say more percussive sounding keyboard
stuff, I dig that shit.
8. TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT YOUR LYRICS. THEY
ARE QUITE STRANGE AND I SUPPOSE ONE HAS TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES IN ORDER
TO FULLY UNDERSTAND AND CAPTURE THEIR TRUE MEANING. AM I RIGHT? WHICH ARE
THE THEMES THAT YOU MAINLY DEAL WITH? WHICH ARE YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION?
9. I REALLY LIKED YOUR COVER ARTWORK! WHOSE IDEA
WAS IT? FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE!!!! THOUGHT-PROVOKING, ELOQUENT, HILARIOUS…
WELL BEING BRIEF I’D SAY EXTREMELY CLEVER… PLEASE COMMENT ON THAT! HOW
DID YOU COME UP WITH IT AND PLEASE DESCRIBE IT FOR THOSE UNLUCKY ONES THAT
HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET…
PALZY: One day I picked up a 'Woman’s Day'
magazine and just started taking the piss out of it.
ADEM: It wasn't really that hard actually,
making the crossword was a different story though.
10. HOW COME AND YOU ARE STILL UNSIGNED? THIS
IS UNBELIEVABLE… WHY? HAVE YOU SENT YOUR DEMO TO ANY LABELS SO FAR?
PALZY: Haven't found the right love affair
yet.
11. HAVE YOU GOT ANY PLANS FOR LIVE SHOWS? WHAT
SHOULD THOSE ATTENDING YOUR LIVE SHOWS EXPECT TO SEE?
ADEM: Being heavily influenced by Alice Cooper
we're always leaning towards some theatrical stuff, but for the moment
just loud, tight and aggressive will have to do.
12. SINCE EVERYTHING CONCERNING VIRUS CRAWL IS
QUITE DERANGED AND CHAOTIC, I’M PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN FINDING OUT
WHICH SONG OF YOURS YOU’D CHOOSE FOR A VIDEO CLIP WITH LIMITLESS BUDGET.
HOW DO YOU IMAGINE IT TO BE?
PALZY: A new one called 'Very American', we've
got some very unique ideas, I don't want to give too much away... nah,
I don't want to give anything away.
13. WHAT DOES YOUR MUSIC STAND FOR? WHAT KIND
OF EMOTIONS OR THOUGHTS DO YOU WANT TO CREATE TO YOUR LISTENERS?
ADEM: A breath of fresh air, something new
to stand out from the old, freedom to be different, and to trigger the
tongue in cheek humor that may lie dormant in them.
14. LET’S SUPPOSE THAT YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO INVITE
FAMOUS MUSICIANS TO PARTICIPATE IN YOUR LIVE SHOWS. WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE
AND WHY?
ADEM: After finishing 'The Fold' I'd always
pictured all my favorite singers sharing lines in that song e.g. Johnny
Rotten, Hetfield, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley. It would work as a recorded
thing but not for live.
PALZY: No-one, not really into that shit, a
Virus show is for Virus Crawl.
15. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THERE WAS NO MUSIC IN
THE WORLD? HOW WOULD YOU CHANNEL ALL YOUR CREATIVE ENERGY?
PALZY: If it wasn't for music I probably wouldn't
be here....man, a world with no music, I'd prefer not to think about it.
ADEM: As above.
16. YOU KNOW IT’S REALLY STRANGE, BUT I’VE COME
TO REALIZE THAT DESPITE THE FACT THAT AUSTRALIA HAS A SMALL UNDERGROUND
METAL SCENE, GREAT BANDS POP OUT FROM OVER THERE. DIVERSITY AND PERSONALITY
CHARACTERIZES MOST OF THE AUSTRALIAN BANDS. PLEASE COMMENT ON THAT AND
PINPOINT SOME OTHER BANDS YOU THINK DESERVE OUR ATTENTION.
ADEM: These aren't necessarily all metal bands
but worth checking: The White Room, Schlauncher, Spazmoo, Jinn, Sleight
of Hand, Karnivool and Cog.
17. THANK YOU! THESE LINES ARE YOURS SO LEAVE
YOUR MESSAGE TO OUR READERS…
