Vinder
Vinder really amazed me! As soon as the first tones and riffs of "Visions Of Time" debouched from my CD player, I was trapped in their world and the story goes on this way ever since. I trully believe that these guys have managed to give birth to one of the greatest albums for this year, an album that could be even characterized as a classic piece of work... Read this very interesting interview and dive into Vinder's world!

1. HELLO! FIRST OF ALL “VISIONS OF TIME” IS A VERY GOOD ALBUM. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT? HAVE YOU FOUND ANY WEAK PARTS ON THE ALBUM OR ARE YOU COMPLETELY SATISFIED?
Thanks a lot! We are very glad to hear that you like the album. We finished the recordings of the songs around March 2005. For that point in time I think it was a solid piece of work. And we are still happy with it. We involved also Martin Winkler from Stormwitch into the production process and Tolis from Sleaszyrider gave the production for the final Mastering to R.D. Liapakis from Mystic Prophecy. This man did an awesome job. We were really surprised listening to the final master. After recording the album we started to present the material live. Playing all the stuff live certainly you start rearranging things and now – almost one and a half year later there are things you would have recorded slightly different. But playing with bands like Metal Church, Chinchilla and My Darkest Hate the band improved on stage from gig to gig and we still like to play the songs. And the other thing is, a recording always is a kind of snapshot and especially the roughness of the production in some part is correlated to exactly that period of time. In summary, yes we are really completely satisfied with that album, but the 2006 material is tighter and heavier than ever, especially Nick Winkler on vocals is doing a really good job and he is much more involved into the songwriting than for the first release.
2. OLI AND RALF, WERE PREVIOUSLY MEMBERS (AND AS I READ IN THE BIO FOUNDERS) OF THE WELL KNOWN METAL BAND TYRAN PACE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY YOU DIDN’T DECIDE TO REFORM TYRAN PACE AND YOU FORMED VINDER INSTEAD?
Yes, Oli and Ralf were founder members of Tyran Pace. By the way Ralf Scheepers joined the band later. Shortly before the first Tyran Pace release Ralf left to join Sinner (they were a really big name that time in Germany and Mat Sinner is currently reforming Sinner again). Now for the actual question, Tyran Pace was, starting with the first release, always associated with the name Ralf Scheepers. Therefore it makes absolutely no sense to reform Tyran Pace without him. And Ralf Scheepers has absolutely no reason to leave Primal Fear at the moment.
3. IS THERE A CHANCE IN THE NEAR FUTURE TO REUNITE AS TYRAN PACE IN ORDER TO DO SOME LIVE SHOWS? WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT ALL THESE REUNIONS OF 80’S METAL BANDS THAT TAKE PLACE IN THE LATE YEARS?
They did! On last years Rock For One World charity festival, which was headlined by Primal Fear and Mat Sinners side project Shiva, Tyran Pace reunited for one song and we all had a lot of fun and there were a lot of people we haven’t met for years – What a party. The guys are still good friends and just a few days ago they met at a private birthday party of an old friend to perform eye to eye and jam along a few other songs. But at the moment there are no plans to extend these activities for a wider audience. We all want to keep the memories in the good old days, everybody has his own projects now and it’s better to face the future and leave the past behind.
4. IS VINDER A STABLE BAND OR A PROJECT? I AM ASKING THAT, BECAUSE OLI AND RALF ALSO PLAY IN OTHER BANDS…. WILL YOU CONTINUE PLAYING IN OTHER BANDS OR IS VINDER YOUR ONLY PRIORITY NOW?
Vinder is a stable band. And all the members have the main focus on Vinder. But playing with other bands always expands your mind – and sometimes it’s just for the money as Huyz is playing also in a Judas Priest Cover band called Just Priest.
5. I READ IN YOUR BIO THAT YOU HAD A COLLABORATION WITH PRIMAL FEAR FOR THEIR ALBUM “DEVIL’S GROUND”. CAN YOU TELL US MORE? DO YOU PLAN IN A FUTURE VINDER RELEASE TO ASK A MEMBER FROM PRIMAL FEAR TO DO A GUEST APPEARANCE?
That’s a funny and simple story. Oli had recorded a demo with Pandora’s Box and did send it to Ralf Schulz for the lyrics (Ralf Schulz was responsible for most of the lyrics on Visions Of Time) but he had some problems to find the melodic lines so he did send the track to Ralf Scheepers from Primal Fear. Scheepers placed the melodic lines and liked the song that much that he wanted to take the song for the Devil’s Ground album. The song name changed to Sacred Illusions due to Scheepers lyrics and that’s it. For Nick it was hard, because we did not allow him to listen to the Primal Fear song until he recorded his vocals on Pandora’s Box. We did not want the Scheepers version to have any influences on Nick’s melodies. Now we have to versions (remember Mechanix from Megadeth :) ) By the way, Pandora’s Box is available for download on www.vinder.de in two Vinder versions, one live track and the other from the Visions Of Time album.
6. BY THE WAY WHAT DOES THE NAME VINDER MEAN AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
Oli is a guy who always said that he wants a name that does not exist in the real world. Thinking of all the internet search engines that is no bad idea because a name as bulldozer won’t help you find the band with google. Later we found out that Vinder means Winner in Danish. And we found a story about a Roman guy named Julius C. Vinder, who wanted get a piece of land from Nero. He used a sort of cumin that made his face look very pale and then he went to Nero. Nero gave him the piece of land because he thought that man will die soon anyway. But I think he lived quite well for another 20 years or so. That’s a funny story that tells you that sometimes you have to choose unconventional ways to reach your goals.
7. ALTHOUGH YOU ARE FROM GERMANY, A COUNTRY THAT IS CONSIDERED AS THE CAPITAL OF EUROPEAN METAL YOU’VE DECIDED TO COLLABORATE WITH A GREEK LABEL LIKE SLEASZY RIDER. WHICH WERE THE REASONS THAT LED YOU TO SUCH COLLABORATION? ARE YOU SATISFIED SO FAR WITH THE PROMOTION OF THIS LABEL?
We got the connection to Tolis from Sleaszyrider through Klaus Sperling (ex-Primal Fear, My Darkest Hate and now recording the new Sinner album) and everything sounded really promising. We had some problems with the press factory in Greece so the only really bad thing at that time was that the release had a delay of about 6 months after the mastering was finished…
8. IN THE BIO THAT YOUR LABEL SENT ME, THEY CHARACTERIZE YOU AS A TEUTONIC METAL BAND. WHICH DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE TRUE MEANING OF THIS CHARACTERIZATION? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
I think that the description Teutonic metal has a more geographically driven meaning. It’s a term that was brought in by Tolis I think – from the Greece perspective. I think in the 80s we used that term to characterize bands such as Accept, Faithful Breath, etc.. We think our sound has of course traditional metal elements and we cannot deny that we grew up with the metal in the 80s but we have a good portion of modern thrash influences.
9. I BELIEVE THAT HERE IN GREECE THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE THAT WILL LIKE THE KIND OF MUSIC YOU PLAY. SO IS IT POSSIBLE TO VISIT US HERE FOR A LIVE SHOW? WILL YOU DO ANY LIVE SHOWS IN GENERAL, IN ORDER TO SUPPORT YOUR DEBUT ALBUM?
We had a couple of live shows with Metal Church, My Darkest Hate, Chinchilla and Donnerkopf (ex-Thunderhead) to promote the new album in 2005. All dated for the planned release so it was a pity that the CD was released after the shows. Currently we are preparing for some gigs for the second half of 2006. We are looking forward to playing in Greece perhaps at the end of 2006 or early 2007 but nothing has been fixed right now. Everybody in the band would be very happy to play in Greece as it is a beautiful country and there is a huge metal scene. At the moment it is not that easy to find a lot of good locations to play in Germany. And we all have to plan it because we have some dependencies because of the things we do for our living.
10. WHICH WAS THE WORST COMMENT THAT YOU READ ABOUT THE BAND AND HOW DID YOU REACT?
I think it was a review of the second live performance of the band when someone did write the band is acting “stiff in the hip”, which means they have no stage acting. Well that was the second gig – that evening everybody was more concentrating on the song material. But when we calmed down we agreed on that comment and in the other gigs we had more focus on stage acting and I think now people get what they expect. Nick is doing a fabulous job communicating with the audience. But we are far away eating bats on stage or doing some other silly thing on stage. It’s Rock and Roll and we practice what we preach.
11. WILL YOU SHOOT ANY VIDEO CLIPS FOR YOUR DEBUT ALBUM? IF YES WHICH SONG WILL YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
We had no plans to shoot a video for the first CD. For the second CD which has the working title “Vitruvian Man” Stani and Nick are working on some themes to realize it visually. The current plans are more in the direction of an experimental film that will use one or two Vinder songs that correlate lyrically as a soundtrack. There are already some existing demo sequences with multiple perspectives displayed at the same time showing the same scenes on one display slightly delayed so that you do not know what the sequence that happened is and what the sequence that will happen is. The current moment, the presence is the only point in time you can not describe. Once you start – it has passed, it’s past. Enough –you’ll see :)
12. WHO WRITES THE LYRICS? CAN YOU TELL US IN A FEW WORDS WHICH THE THEME OF EACH SONG THAT YOU HAVE INCLUDED HERE IS? WHAT DOES THE INITIALS (F.U.C.K.) IN THE TITLE OF THE 4TH SONG MEAN?
Most of the lyrics for Visions of Time have been written by Ralf Schulz and the rest of it by Oli Kaufmann. Using the abbreviations in F.U.CK. is based on an idea of Oli respecting the legal situation in the United States where you can get some trouble using words like this. So there is no meaning behind it – it’s just used to not use the word fuck. Now to the songs of Visions of time:

Dust to Dust – This song mentions that the evil forces are no creation of mankind but existed a long time before a human being or any other creature populated the planet. Mankind just discovered these forces and used them from the beginning of their existence. Especially the Catholic Church instrumented these forces for a certain period of time, that’s what we want to cover with the line Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. The Old Testament is really brutal. People don’t have the choice; there is only black or white – not much space in between.

Demon’s Hate – This song continuous the foreshadowing of Dust to dust with the bad influences the Catholic Church had on mankind in the middle age.s People like you and me where really trying to live the way the church wanted them to. But the church did not rest and increased the pressure on people, so no matter how they believed in god they were forced to find power from other sources to be released from their pain.

Trash Of society – A variation on young and useless from Thunderhead if you want. Once you reached a certain level in our society near the social bottom the following direction is almost clear. Useless for our commercial driven capitalistic society you are useless. Not only that you have to face a really hard live – no the society will not stop to show you that they don’t give a damn. The result of this can be something we have seen in France some weeks ago when all the young people in the suburbs where really hard to tame.

F.U.C.K. this – We have all these TV casting shows that create bands that will be pushed by labels to simply earn money for a short time. Our criticism is that first of all the music they produce for the masses just sucks and that the big labels have no long breath to let a band grow. There are a couple of bands from the 60s and 70s that just needed some time to grow and they became heroes – not for one day but for a really long time and we still hear the influences of these bands nowadays. In the 60s the British government invested a lot of money into – we don’t know how you call it, youth centers or something like this, where young people met. So that they could play music the government spent money and of course rooms where the young ones could play. That’s one reason for the boom that had its origin in Great Britain. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and all these guys have the same roots. Today Sweden has some concepts to support young musicians and bands for 2 or 3 years financially so the bands can grow without pressure and look – they have a lot of really good bands and a really solid foundation for metal.

Mr.Knowitall – It’s all about the guy who owns our rehearsal room and we can tell you – this guy thinks he knows everything, is proud of himself and his mouth never shuts: “Talk yourself to death, Mr. Wonderful”.

Slave – Express yourself, play your music no matter if House or Metal as long as it comes from your heart. And if someone wants you to do anything you do not want to, spit in his face or walk away but don’t do it, don’t be his slave.

Pandora’s Box – Sometimes you are suffering for things and you know exactly that in the end it will turn out bad but you can’t stop it. Sometimes certain feelings are a mixture of pain and pleasure and that‘s exactly what this song describes. For example being in a relation with a clear knowledge that you get betrayed, you know this hurts but you cannot stop it because of the pleasure you can participate and the lust you feel getting her back. Or you know exactly where you could end up touring around with some friends starting drinking – sometimes it really turns out bad and headaches are the smallest problem, but you know, some days later you want to open the box again …

TV Kid – It’s about hanging around in front of the television, you are watching all the crap, confronted with violence, you stop living the moment you turn on that thing.

Visions of Time – This is the oldest song on the album. Ralf Schulz wrote the song when he was playing in a band called Double-D. The lyrics did change a bit and the title that time was Dr. Dolphin. The song is on a more abstract level now and mentions all the pain mankind brought on this planet. Killing around not only human beings but also all the animals for no reasons. We think there is a big difference in killing animals for your needs or just for fun. There is no excuse killing animals for fun. The other aspect of the song is the non-existence of any emotions by time. Time has no feeling and there is no natural justice that will keep all these crimes in mind. The sea is red the moment the dolphin is shot but just a few hours later the sea is blue and there is no sign of the crime to see. We’ll extend these thoughts on the next album, talking about the presence that is only a virtual point in time whereas past and future describe a period. There is certainly an exact moment when the dolphin dies but this moment is infinitely small that if the surrounding conditions allow it nobody will recognize it. Currently a lot of people die on this planet each day. And in the western world the conditions are in a way that we simply don’t care about it. Our health is based on the pain of these people.

Whore Babylon – We think this is the best song on the album – Ok, not all members of the band agree, but most of them. “Praise yourself and money”, this is exactly the thing we live with. As we mentioned before we do not care as long as we don’t have to suffer. We are not in the position to decide whether we do it right or wrong. We lack the Meta level to have a view on our behavior from an outside point of view. Natural Sciences had the same problem for a long time; they could only describe things they saw. In the meantime they calculate multidimensions and nobody can ever see these dimensions. We hope that mankind once will have the ability to reach this meta-level to judge in a more objective way before it is too late.

13. YOU PLAY MUSIC DEEPLY ROOTED IN THE 80’S. DO YOU THINK THAT THERE ARE STILL YOUNG METALHEADS OUT THERE THIRSTY TO LISTEN TO SUCH MUSIC OR DO YOU THINK YOUR SOUND APPLIES MORE TO THE OLDER METALLERS?
On the concerts the biggest part of the audience are young metal heads. What we think is, the older metallers still support the scene buying CDs and everything going to the bigger festivals, open airs and the young one tend to go to the club gigs. It’s always a question of the money you have. For the big festivals as Rock am Ring you pay about 100 EUROS and that’s a lot of money.
14. NAME 5 CLASSIC METAL SONGS THAT YOU LIKE A LOT AND YOU’D LIKE TO HAVE COMPOSED YOURSELF…
Not so easy, with 5 guys, so each got one song: Young and Useless – Thunderhead, Cowboys from hell – Pantera, Fast as a Shark – Accept, Hells Bells – AC/DC, Children of the damned – Iron Maiden.
15. LET’S SAY THAT YOUR MUSIC IS A PAINTING. WHAT WOULD IT SHOW AND IF IT WAS AN EMOTION WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Hey, our Logo is not so bad. Let’s say it is a silhouette of a randy bull face. The emotion then would be positive aggression. Not aggression that will hurt but the aggression to fulfill you desires with a positive result for everyone involved.
16. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME! I REALLY LIKE YOUR ALBUM A LOT. THE LAST LINES BELONG TO YOU AND PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE TO THE READERS OF OUR ‘ZINE…
Thank you and we hope to meet you personally in Greece soon.
