"The Angel And The Rain"
is surely one of the best goth rock albums I've listened to lately, so
I recommend it to all the fans of the genre.This is actually why we interviewed
Francesca, one of the band's masterminds, to offer you the chance of a
more insightful view of this very promising act!
1. HELLO! FIRST OF ALL I HAVE TO ADMIT
THAT YOUR DEBUT ALBUM "THE ANGEL AND THE RAIN" IS ONE OF THE FEW GOTH ROCK
ALBUMS THAT I LIKED FOR THIS YEAR. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT? IS THERE ANYTHING
YOU'D LIKE TO CHANGE?
Francesca: Ciao! :) Thank you so much for
your kind words. I don't know if we would change something in the record
now, probably we would but then it wouldn't be the same. Once you close
a work it kind of takes a soul and starts breathing alone so you can't
change it again.
2. LET'S START FROM THE FORMATION OF THE BAND.
AS I READ IN YOUR BIO 2 OF YOUR MEMBERS WERE LIVING IN MILAN AND OTHER
2 IN VENICE. HOW DID YOU MEET AND DECIDE TO FORM A BAND?
Francesca: I moved to Milan when I was 19
but before that, in Venice, I used to play in a band with Simon who still
lives there. Now he goes back and forth for reharsals and meetings with
the band, not very comfortable for him but the base of the band is here
in Milan so there is no other way.
3. I ALSO READ THAT 2 OF YOUR MEMBERS HAVE A LOT
OF EXPERIENCE IN THE ROCK SCENE OF ITALY. CAN YOU TELL US IN WHICH BANDS
THEY HAD PLAYED BEFORE AND IF THEY HAVE RELEASED ANYTHING WITH THEM?
Francesca: Tank , the guitarrist, played in
pretty famous bands , Oxido and For Sale, then we put up a band together,
The Flu, and with this band we toured all over Italy for a few years. It
was a new punk/grunge/metal band and we also signed with Sony Music Italy
back in 1999 releasing an album "Il Parco Dei Sogni", it came out with
only my name, Francesca Chiara, though. I think one song of the album
arrived in Greece, it was called "L'onda", an electronic track.
4. "THE ANGEL AND THE RAIN" IS A QUITE WEIRD TITLE.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH IT? WHICH IS THE MEANING OF IT?
Francesca: It's the title of the story that
is included in the booklet. It's actually a concept album and the story
makes you live the enviroment of the music, a big city, with rain, darkness,
fear, love, death and strange things happening. It could easily be the
soundtrack of a movie just like The Crow or Blade.
5. WHICH ONE OF THE SONGS INCLUDED IN YOUR ALBUM
IS THE ONE THAT YOU WROTE EASILY AND WHICH ONE TOOK YOU MORE TIME AND WHY?
Francesca: The song that took us a long time
is "Can You Hear Me?" because it's the first song we wrote and we were
searching the right direction for it but also for the whole project. The
song that came like magic is "Little Suicide" which is also my favourite.
It's really special for me and I get shivers everytime I sing it or I simply
listen to it.
6. THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT HAVEN'T LISTENED TO YOUR
MUSIC YET AND WILL PROBABLY READ THIS INTERVIEW. SO IN A FEW WORDS
CAN YOU TELL US HOW DO YOU SOUND AND SOME OF YOUR INFLUENCES?
Francesca: Oh this is really hard to do. Just
imagine to take all the music styles that you've listened to in 15/20 years
and mix them all together. That's what we've done and it took a lot of
research to do that but right now we can say that we've found our way to
express who we are, who we've been and who we will be all at once.
Our music is a mix of 80s hard rock, gothic,
metal, darkwave, electronic stuff, newpunk with a big attention to the
melodies so there is some pop in it as well.
7. WHO WRITES THE LYRICS IN THE BAND? WHAT KIND
OF SUBJECTS INSPIRE YOU TO WRITE ABOUT?
Francesca: I write the lyrics because when
a melody comes to my mind magically it has most of the words too. I only
fix it a little bit but I already see clearly the feeling of the song.
I respect very much the magic of music. I always try not to use the brain
but just the emotions when I write a song. It has to stay pure and people
have to feel the same emotion I got when I wrote it. It's very important.
8. IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN, FRANCESCA DID THE COVER
OF THE ALBUM. ANYWAY CAN YOU TELL US HOW THE COVER ARTWORK IS CONNECTED
WITH THE MUSIC AND THE LYRICS OF THE ALBUM?
Francesca: The artwork of the cover took me
a long time to finish. The first step was creating Rain, the 3D character
and I did that with Marco Callegari, a great 3D designer. Then I kept listening
to the songs to imagine the place, the colours, the writings and this is
the result. It was fun.
9. WHICH WAS THE WEIRDEST DESCRIPTION THAT YOU
READ FOR YOUR MUSIC SO FAR IN A REVIEW?
Francesca: Oh we've had the weirdest reviews
of all. The funniest was a German guy who thought that my English was really
bad because in a song I was saying "You runne, you hideee". :) Actually
the lyrics of the songs are "You run and you hide" but obviously he had
not read the words. It was really funny we all laughed so bad. In another
review an Italian guy said that the "hey hey hey" of the song "Nodody"
are really cheap... He should say that to the Prodigy and to Marilyn Manson
too cause it is an idea that we took on purpose from them, something like
a dedication. Fast reviews I guess but it's funny anyway.
10. IS THERE ANY QUESTION THAT YOU'D LIKE TO BE
ASKED IN AN INTERVIEW BUT PEOPLE NEVER ASKED YOU? THIS IS YOUR CHANCE...
Francesca: The question would be: "Why music?"
and the answer would be "Because..." Mmm a little too short, isn't it?
Ahahaha I'll think about another one.
11. WILL YOU DO ANY LIVE SHOWS? ANY CHANCE TO
SEE YOU HERE IN GREECE?
Francesca: We are gonna start the live activity
in the beginning of 2007 in London, at the Camden Underworld but the agency
is working on the gigs so I will let you know if we make it to Greece.
It would be great! I love Greek people, I've been to Rodos on vacation
and it was awesome!
