The
Grand Trick
The Grand Trick is a new
born band formed back in 2003 and with one demo they managed to get a deal
with a label. Read the interview to find how they found this deal with
just one demo and learn more things about this very good band from Sweden.
1. First of all please tell us in short
the history of The Grand Trick.
Well, It all began in May 2003 when Jonas
Malmqvist, Michael Karlsson and I (Daniel Larsson) decided to start a band
with influences from the 70's era. Then I mean influences like Deep Purple
and the heavier music that was made back then. We are all very interested
in reproduce that great music in our own way. An extremely experimental
genre where just everything can happen! That's why many bands from that
era were quite unique. Enough about inspirations... Stefan Johansson joined
Grand Trick shorly after though we were looking for a second guitarist
and also a vocalist. Daniel Sandberg sings on "The First Trick" but left
the band in early 2005. Today Johan Dahnberg is the vocalist in Grand Trick
and he sings on the latest "The Decadent Session", our debut-fullenght
which was released earlier this year.
2. You released a demo last year. How were
the reactions about it?
"The First Trick" was actually a demo which
was re-recorded. There's 2 versions, one of whom is very rare with Michael
Karlsson doing the singing. We sended that version to musicians just to
find the complete line-up. When the line-up was completed we recorded it
once again and started the co-operation with distributors Record Heaven.
They released it for us and we got great response all over the world. This
amazing demo was really a springboard in our career
3. Did you get the deal with the label with
this demo?
4. Give me some details about your debut album.
A decadent session indeed! The album was supposed
to be released in early 2005 but great delays due to some miserable circumstances.
Among other problems our vocalist Daniel Sandberg left the band in the
middle of the recording session. So we had to start rehearse with Johan
Dahnberg and the session in the studio had to be terminated for a while.
Johan did great after all! Hard work is a condition for our success! "The
Decadent Session" was recorded in an old storage room where they have build
a studio. I remember I did put my drumkit in the middle of this huge room
just to make it sound "big". As a starting point it was exellent to continue
with the bass in the same style. Just make it sound huge and a little bit
dirty we told our sound engineerer. We are satisfied with the result but
we will maybe strive for a different sound on the next album. It was supposed
to be 10 tracks on the album. Unfortunately we were not satisfied with
a ballad so in the end we deleted that song. But it will come on our next
album, I promise you!
5. Are you satisfied with the help from your
label?
Yes, we are very satisfied with our label!
They have really helped us a lot and they are constantly working with the
promotion and distribution. Not to mention the distribution. I would not
be surprised if the trade of "The Decadent Session" is flourishing in outer
space!
6. Have you played any live shows so far?
Yes, only in Sweden so far but we hope to
conquer parts of Europe in The nearest future. I highely recommend all
of you out there to take the opportunity to discover Grand Trick live.
So, if we're playing in a venue nearby you better show up!
7. Have you already written any new songs?
We have material for a new album and we will
enter the studio in January/February 2006. Probably the album will be released
before next summer. You can expect some great songs! The working name of
the creation is "Delirium" which is a very serious mental disturbance caused
by alcohol. I once had it :(
8. Can you describe your music for someone
who hasn't heard it?
Reviewers and fans can describe it much better
than us. Well, I've Heard about some parallels that for me sounds odd.
The roots of our music can be found if you listen to Purple, Zeppelin and
with these roots we develop it to The Grand Trick. We have a lot of influences
not only from the 70?s so it's a glorious mix. Today it's hard to be original
but at least we try and people actually think that we succeed and so do
we! Listen to our music and see us live, get an idea of your own.
9. Your wildest dream about The Grand Trick?
Hm... crazy tours all over the world. Play
for a really big audience or making a live gig in TV. And of course, come
to Greece and play for you my friend :)
10. It there a story behind the name of the
band?
I think that Jonas came up with the name and
the rest of us found it very good. What is the grand trick then? Well,
we have our own personal solutions on that matter and for the rest we say:
-Go find your own trick! And it better be ggrand!
11. Can you tell us some words about the lyrics?
Ok, first of all, we are not a political band.
The most important is the music. The lyrics come in second hand if not
in the same place as the music. I do not say that we have pointless lyrics
but sometimes we don't feel like saving the world if you know what I mean.
I was really drunk last night or I had sex with a prostitute is typical
lines. We have deeper lyrics too but it's not necessary that all lyrics
shall be masterpiece of poetry. Not in this band.
12. Thanks for your time and close the interview
as you want!
Go order "The Decadent Session", an amazing
album with elements that could satisfy most of the people that are in to
heavy rock! And for those who are not, give it a try! www.recordheaven.net
