Call
Syrens Call is one of those
bands who the more you listen to the more you grow to like. They have everything
that is required even from the most demanding melodic metal fan and in
addition to all these, they have a superb female singer with a really warm
and emotive voice. I think reading this interview will be a pleasant and
interesting pastime for the fans of this genre...
1. HELLO! RECENTLY YOU HAVE RELEASED YOUR
FIRST EP “AGAINST WIND AND TIDE”. WHICH IS THE PURPOSE OF SUCH A RELEASE?
HOW SATISFIED ARE YOU WITH THE FINAL RESULT?
Frank (keyboards): Hello! In June 2005, we
recruited Soraya as our new singer. We were so proud of our new line-up
that we wanted to record several tracks quite rapidly to introduce Soraya
to our fans. It was important for us to give them something new with the
new voice of the band. As we had composed a couple of songs between January
and June 2005, we picked up 3 of them and went into our studio. We decided
to add 2 more tracks – "Aquatic Coma" a 2006 version and the cover of "Enjoy
The Silence" from Depeche Mode – to complete the tracklist. This time there
was no compromise. We wanted the result to be the best possible. So we
mixed the EP at the “LB Lab”, the famous studio of Loudblast, and we went
to Paris for the mastering at “L’autre studio”. Finally we are quite proud
of our new release and the reactions we had were very enthusiastic. We
are constantly in search of progress and we hope so for our next album.
2. WITH THIS EP YOU ALSO INTRODUCE YOUR NEW SINGER,
SORAYA. TELL US HOW YOU FOUND HER. DID SHE COME TO YOU OR HAVE YOU SEEN
HER PERFORM LIVE WITH OTHER BANDS?
Soraya (vocals): I read their advertisement,
I’ve contacted them and had an audition…
Frank: Indeed Soraya read one of our advertisements
and decided to come for an audition. We sent her several backings of several
songs from our latest album “Emoceans” and she came into the studio to
record her vocal parts. Among the semi dozen of singers we auditioned,
Soraya really blew us away! We knew as she started to sing that she would
become our new frontwoman! You know, she has got everything we needed!
Soraya is very talented as singer and lyric-writer, she is clever and nice,
and she has a lot of humor, which is very important in our band. Now we
know that we have the good line-up for the band.
3. WHICH ARE THE NEW ELEMENTS THAT SORAYA BROUGHT
TO THE BAND WHEN SHE JOINED YOU? DID SHE PARTICIPATE IN ANY WAY IN THE
COMPOSITIONS OF THE EP?
Soraya: I’m the lyric writer, I create the
vocal lines.
Frank: Soraya took part in the composition
of the EP. She wrote all the lyrics and she wrote the vocal lines with
Stephane and Thibaut (guitars). It was very important for us to have a
singer who can rapidly write her own lyrics. She really got invested and
her role will be more and more important in the future because she is now
totally integrated with us.
Seb (drums): Soraya’s voice is perfect for
the music of SYRENS CALL. She is powerful and full of emotions. Just what
we needed in fact!
4. WHEN DO YOU EXPECT TO RELEASE YOUR NEW FULL
LENGTH? CAN YOU GIVES US SOME INFO ABOUT IT AND THE POSSIBLE TITLE AND
TRACK – LISTING? WILL YOU INCLUDE ANY SONGS FROM THE EP?
Frank: In fact we have already composed almost
45 minutes of music. We don’t know if the whole music will be on the next
album but there are 5 or 6 songs that could fit. In the following months,
we plan to rehearse these songs and to compose the rest of the album. I
can’t tell you a lot of things right now because nothing is definitive.
But I can reveal that there will be our first epic 12 minute long song,
some songs will be heavy and catchy and some will be atmospheric. We also
included more parts inspired by classical music than in the past.
5. WHO WRITES THE LYRICS FOR SYRENS CALL? WHAT
KIND OF THEMES INSPIRE YOU TO WRITE? CAN YOU GIVE US IN A FEW WORDS THE
STORY OF EACH SONG THAT YOU HAVE INCLUDED IN THE EP?
Soraya: OK, so I find my inspiration in the
complexity of human relationships…I give you in a few words the story of
each song included in the EP: “RUN AND FALL” deals with psychological confinement
“YOUR SOUL IS MINE” deals with manipulation and revenge, “COLD EMBERS”
deals with the loss of a loved one…
6. IF YOU COMPARE YOUR LATEST RELEASE WITH YOUR
PREVIOUS 2, WHICH ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND THE DIFFERENCES YOU CAN FIND?
7. THIS IS AN INTERVIEW THAT WILL BE READ BY PEOPLE
THAT HAVE NEVER LISTENED TO YOUR MUSIC. SO, IN A FEW WORDS, TRY TO EXPLAIN
TO THEM WHAT THEY WILL LISTEN TO, IF THE BUY AN ALBUM OF SYRENS CALL…
Seb: Well it is quite difficult to describe
music by words but I would say that if you like melodic metal with great
melodies, powerful guitars and female vocals you are supposed to love SYRENS
CALL :) But anyway the better way to know if it is true is to come and

8. YOU HAVE ALSO DONE A VIDEO – CLIP FOR THE SONG
“RUN AND FALL”. DID YOU CHOOSE THIS ONE BECAUSE YOU CONSIDER IT AS THE
“HIT” OF THE ALBUM? IF YOU HAD MONEY TO DO AN EXPENSIVE VIDEO CLIP, WHICH
SONG WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND HOW DO YOU IMAGINE IT?
Soraya: Indeed, “Run And Fall” is the “hit”
of AWAT. We’d like to do a video clip with a real scenario to relate a
story to somebody.... I think there are interesting ideas for the story
of “Your Soul Is Mine” and “Run And Fall” too but we get by as best as
we could...Actually, if we had money, I would like to make a video clip
for each song!
Frank: For the video clip, we took some stage
and backstage material. Kamel, a friend of us did a good work! We are proud
of our first video clip and plan to do another one for the next album.
So it will feature a new song ! But if I had to do one for an old song,
it could be "Far Away" or "Legasea".
9. DO YOU REMEMBER A REVIEW THAT YOU READ AND
YOU THOUGHT THAT THE REVIEWER DIDN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WITH
YOUR MUSIC?
Frank: Of course we did. Every band has this
kind of review. I think that whatever you do, you cannot have the interest
and respect of 100% of the listeners. Even Iron Maiden or Dream Theater
have fans who love what they do with each album, and some who cannot understand
the new evolution of their favorite band. We will never let ourselves change
because of one of these bad reviews.
10. WILL YOU DO ANY LIVE SHOWS OR WILL YOU WAIT
TO RELEASE YOUR NEW ALBUM FIRST?
Soraya: A few shows are planned in the following
months. We are writing new songs for the third album too…
Frank: We really miss the stage. We had a show
on October 31st 2006 and it was so nice. The show before took place in
May and we cannot say we do a lot of shows! We decided to plan some shows
in the following months to have fun and to feel this kind of contact with
our audience that every artist needs.
Seb: We will also give some acoustic gigs to
promote AWAT in the following weeks.
11. DO YOU REMEMBER THE WEIRDEST OR THE FUNNIEST
QUESTION THAT YOU HAVE EVER BEEN ASKED? CAN YOU SHARE IT WITH US?
Soraya: Yes, it’s a whole story…Frank? Will
you dare to explain them this story?
Frank: Let’s have a look to the cover of “Against
Wind and Tide”. Well… Hmm… Can you see this beautiful siren? You can imagine
her beauty. Her tail is appealing… But some think it is a… you know… a
whale… We have never been asked why there is a whale on the cover… It was
very funny!
Seb: Yeah let’s change the name of the band
to WHALES CALL!
12. THIS GOES TO SORAYA: HOW DO YOU FEEL TO BE
THE ONLY WOMAN IN A MAN’S GROUP? HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT THAT THE OTHERS
CAN’T REALLY UNDERSTAND YOU AND THE WAY YOU THINK?
Soraya: The only woman in a men’s group????
I feel good…tululu lulululu!!! So good!!! ;-) Everything is all right,
I’ve never thought that they don’t understand me, but perhaps I might tell
them if it’s the case….
Seb: Well in fact I believe you should have
asked us how we feel with only one woman in the whole band :)
