Sun
Of Sadness
Sun Of Sadness is a German
based band that tries to create and explore with their music new soundscapes.
If you feel brave and open minded enough, then step into their world and
make this journey to the dark side of the world...
1.Hi guys! First of all congratulations
on your newest album! Since this is our first interview, can you inform
us about the past of the band?
Hi, we are Sun of Sadness from Cologne, Germany.
Our first interesting sign of life is from the year 1998 when we recorded
and published our first demo. In 1999 we recorded the album "Picture" which
led to a deal with M.O.S. Records and which was published in the year 2001
by M.O.S. Records. In this year we recorded the album "Forest". But unfortunately
M.O.S. decided at this time to retire from business. Some small labels
offered us to publish "Forest", but the conditions were so bad that we
decided to offer the CD as a free download album on our homepage. In 2005
we started to record our latest record "Ghost" which was published 2006
by ONGE Records.
2. Why have you had as the band's first name
"Erotic Of The Machine" and then you changed it into Sun Of Sadness?
The name "Erotic of the Machine" was taken
because of pressure of time. Shortly after the foundation of the band a
friend asked us if we could play on a concert, because one of the bands
couldn’t play. Therefore we needed of course a name. And this friend needed
it within one hour. Therefore I told him the name "Erotic of the machine".
This was one of the names we were discussing about, because some of us
liked it, but of course not everyone. By the way this is a title of a "Voodcult"
song. During this first concert our bass player made an announcement that
we will be called "Sun of Sadness" from now on, which wasn’t discussed
with the rest of the band.
But after a while the rest of us started to
like the name and therefore we decided to keep it. For us "Sun of Sadness"
is a kind of feeling, a sad but also warm feeling and it’s a description
for the small world we try to create with our music. A dark world, yes,
but also a world where the sad, desperate and lost should find some sympathy.
A world full of dirty guitars, melancholic keyboards, blastbeats, groaning
basses, electronic and nagging. But of course everyone has to decide for
themselfes if we were successful in building our world.
3.So far you have released three albums, for
someone that hasn’t followed your entire career, will we find any musical
differences between these albums?
The albums have a similiar atmosphere and
the arrangments and melodies are also similar. But the dosage of these
elements is different. "Ghost" is our fastest and most complex record.
"Forest" is straighter, contains more melodies and it is not as dark as
"Ghost". You can say that "Forest" is much more Gothic than "Ghost". In
terms of atmosphere and complexity "Picture" is very similar to "Ghost".
But the metal elements are not as present as on "Ghost". The album contains
a lot of keyboards and is even more Gothic than "Forest".
4.Back to the new album, you have given it
the title "Ghost? Why? Is it because it's an easy word or do you want to
say something with it?
We wanted this title because it describes
the character and the atmosphere of the record very good. But apart from
that we really like album titles that only have one word. "Picture", "Forest",
"Ghost". All of our records have only titles with one word, because they
offer a scope of interpretation.
5. Lyrically, do you explore new "lands" or
do you just take some ideas from your life?
We don’t take scenes from our life. If we
had had, our singer Martin would have killed himself for over 7 times,
hehe. But we are inspired by life and the feelings we have when we look
at the world and the humans in this world. And with these feelings we try
to create fictitious stories.
6.You formed back in 1995, after twelve years,
do you believe that it is worth your time, money and energy you have given
to Sun Of Sadness?
Of course it is worth! Music and especially
metal means everything to us. Therefore every minute and every cent we’ve
spent was worth it. Especially spending all this for our new record which
makes us very proud. That’s what we are living for: Concerts, recording
our stuff, drinking beer and talking to other people about music.
7. If someone say that you follow the path
of gothic/black metal, will you agree with him/her and why?
Yes, we would agree because it is true, hehe.
There are a lot of gothic and black metal elements in our music. But we
also play with death metal, indie and electro elements and try to mix all
these different styles to a very dark kind of metal.
8. What about live shows? Are they in your
future plans?
At the moment we are planning to play some
festivals and single live shows. But I cannot say more about this because
nothing is fixed yet. If we have any news about this we will publish it
on our MySpace page. Furthermore it is really hard for us to play shows,
because we are caught between two stools. For the gothic people we are
too hard, for the black metal and death metal fans we are too soft. But
of course we won’t give up and we will keep on trying. Unfortunately our
singer left the band a short time ago. At the moment "Horn" from the death
metal band "Jack Slater" is helping us out.
9. If I push the play button on your CD-player
what will I hear?
We all hear very different music. Therefore
I can only speak for myself.
Ahab - The call of the wretched sea
Snakeskin - Cantatronic
Lola Angst – The council of love
She wants Revenge – She wants revenge
The Dresden Dolls – Yes Virgina
Cadaveria – The Shadow’s Madame
10. Which is your opinion about the metal scene
in your country?
The metal scene is cool here. It’s big, very
friendly and you get to know other metal heads quickly. The only thing
that bothers me is that the people are too narrow minded about new music.
On every party you hear the same songs. For a band like us it is very complicated
to bring the people in touch with our music. But apart from that I really
like our scene. As I said before: a big and friendly family.
11. Thank you for your time and I wish all
the best to Sun Of Sadness!
Thank you too. And hear our last words: If
you like the music, recommend it to your friends. If you don’t like it,
recommend it to your foes ;)
