Sodamned
Before some weeks we spoke
with Juliano the guitar player of Sodamned, a death metal band from Brazil.
Read what he told us for the metal scene over there and generally about
the music all over the world.
1. Please give us a short Sodamned band
bio.
Juliano: We started the activities on march/99,
and during these 6 years we’ve kept the same members, just changing the
second guitar post, which is filled by our new guitar, “Japa”. Due to money
problems, we just recorded a demo after 4 years, in 2003, and we are working
on its divulgation until now.
2. Why did you choose this name for the band?
Juliano: This name was created by one of the
second guitar players who played with us, but he isn´t in the band
anymore. That’s the union between So and Damned, but we mixed the names
to create some personality. We talk about a lot of things which turn our
band So Damned.....
3. Can you inform us on the recording sessions
of your latest demo CD?
Juliano: We recorded that demo in a city 6
hours far from our home, so, we’ve spent just 25 hours recording that,
´cause that’s too expensive for us to travel and record, and leave
our jobs and things like that, but the final result sounds great for us.
Now we could change some things in order to turn the results better, but
at that time, that’s the best we could do.
4. How can you describe your music?
Juliano: Our music sounds like a fusion of
Death, Thrash and Black Metal. We play fast parts mixed with slow parts,
screaming vocals mixed with growling ones, some melodic guitar riffs, sometimes
sounding more heavy metal.....We try to do a kind of music full of strong
and dark feelings, melodies and aggressiveness....that’s the way we find
to express our feelings and do our own kind of hard music.
5. Have you already played any live shows in
order to support your release?
Juliano: Yes, unfortunately we aren’t so known
here, so, we just play in our province, Santa Catarina, but that’s a cool
place to play the shows. The public here is little, but people really get
crazy on the live shows and that energy turns our shows better. We are
looking for playing outside, soon we’ll do that, ´cause is too much
expensive now, and we are just getting known outside Santa Catarina.
6. So far how were the reactions of the press
and fans concerning your demo?
Juliano: Well, we heard really great words
about our music from mags, webzines and people, but at the same time we
received a lot or critics concerning the demo´s sound quality, and
we know that’s not so good, but that was our first time in a studio and
that’s what we could do at that time. Next release we’ll be better, and
the next better too....we need more experiences inside a studio to get
the best results.
7. How is the music scene in your country?
Juliano: Here there are really a lot of metal
bands, about 2000 bands, a lot of mags, labels and gigs. There isn’t much
professionalism concerning the gig organizing, for example, the bands pay
their own journeys to play on the gigs, and that’s a big problem ´cause
the bands can’t pay to play on all gigs which they are invited, so, you
lose a lot of opportunities to spread your music. Brazil is a really big
country and it’s too hard get known in the North, if you are from the south.
We are known better outside Brazil, and that’s a little sad to us, but
that’s the case. We do our best to spread our music inside and outside
our country, but perhaps we could be better known here. But, at the same
time, I see now many people minding about buying national stuff, like demos,
CDs, mags, I think people is, finally, starting to believe in the Brazilian
metal and our scene is growing up as the time flows, but the money is our
worst problem still.
8. Do you have any future plans?
Juliano: In July, we’ll release a track on
a compilation by Violent Records, from Sao Paulo, and we’ll concentrate
on its divulgation. We are thinking of a new record for the next year,
but we haven’t decided yet the way to release that, a split CD or an EP,
we don´t know, but that’s a plan a little far and we aren’t so worried
about.
9. Thanks a lot for your time and close the
interview as you want.
Juliano: Thanx Antonis and Behind the Veil
Webzine for your support, we are really grateful about it. We ask people
to visit our web www.sodamned.com
and write to us. Keep the metal flame burning....
