Mors
In Tabula
Mors In Tabula are here
to offer new ways out through pioneering sounds and to create the sound
of the future simply by mixing a great deal of classic extreme metal elements
with modern and futuristic tinges. If you think you are open minded enough
then read the interview below and make sure you check their music out.
I surely enjoyed the talk we had and learned a lot of things!
1. CONGRATULATIONS ON “BLEMISH”! HOW DO YOU
FEEL ABOUT IT? ARE YOU CONTENT WITH THE FINAL RESULT?
Thank you very much. We are very glad about
the release of “Blemish”. We did a very good studio work, experimenting
and exploring new ways and elements for a metal band, sending metal to
more futuristic horizons. We wanted to share our music and our emotions
with the whole world and especially with people who got bored listening
to yesterdays music today.
2. GIVE US A SHORT BAND BIO BY PRESENTING THE
MOST IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE BAND’S LIFE. HOW DID YOU COME TO COOPERATE
WITH SLEASZY RIDER RECORDS?
The band was formed at the end of 2003 by
George, after the splitting up of our former band, REGENT. He had this
concept in mind, influenced by horror movie soundtracks, and wanted to
create something different, bizarre, and of course extreme and really heavy.
Two months later, he proposed we join forces with him. We were so hungry
to create, and started rehearsing and recording. After five months, we
had finished all the material we needed for a debut album, we chose four
tracks, made a promo cd, and we tried to promote it worldwide as
best as we could. In January of 2006 we signed to Sleaszy Rider. We already
knew that major labels hardly sign demo bands and if they do, they do it
for tax reasons and they mostly “shop” from the “northern market”. We didn’t
want to risk and spend precious time, so we sent our material to Mr Palantzas
who appreciated our work and we got a deal.
3. I MUST CONFESS THAT I LOVED THE OVERALL ARTWORK
AND THE PHOTOS ARE REALLY DARK AND ATMOSPHERIC! WHOSE IDEA WERE ALL THESE?
We knew Seth since we were playing with Regent.
In fact we played live with his former band, Septic Flesh. We knew he’s
a very talented artist and when we got in his studio for the photo session,
we asked him to do all the artwork for the album, to make it dark, sick
and extreme like our music. When he sent the samples, George and I were
shocked. We were seeing in front of us what we couldn’t explain with words.
This man has a huge talent.
4. FURTHERMORE I COULDN’T FAIL NOTICING A CONNECTION
WITH YOUR DEMO. I MEAN THE COVER ARTWORKS ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL WITH THE
DEMO’S BEING MORE FOCUSED AND THE ALBUM’S BEING MORE GENERAL, SHOWING A
WIDER BACKGROUND. AM I RIGHT? WHY DID YOU DO THAT?
You’re right. Our demo was the messenger of
“Blemish” in every way. That’s why we used that cover artwork and above
all, we made a really professional job for a demo. Our obsession with details,
gave us great reviews of the demo not only musically, but also artistically.
5. IF YOU WERE ASKED TO WRITE A FEW LINES FOR
“BLEMISH” WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TRYING TO BE AS OBJECTIVE AS POSSIBLE? WHY
SHOULD THE METALLERS CHECK YOU?
Because we play metal. A different kind, or
maybe a different genre but this is definitely metal. I suppose that old
school and traditional metallers will hate us. It will sound very strange
in their ears. Hahahaha. This is the price you have to pay when you
represent something new. Believe me, we know that very well. Back at the
late 80’s when it was the huge explosion of Thrash and Death metal, we
as Crucifix and then as Regent, were among the first bands in our city
who were playing that kind of music. Do you know what we were told by the
“Heavy Metal protectors” of that age? “You are very good musicians, but
your music is garbage, it sucks, this is the rape of heavy metal”. I say
nowadays, did Slayer, Metallica or Death and Morbid Angel ever rape heavy
metal? I don’t think so. The music of Mors In Tabula is for open minded
people who can really imagine how the future metal music will sound like.
6. WHAT’S THE BEST AND WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF
YOUR MUSIC, ACCORDING TO YOU?
This is the decision of the audience. According
to me, this is an awesome work for a debut album.
7. ARE THERE ANY ELEMENTS YOU’D LIKE TO ADD OR
EXPERIMENT WITH IN THE FUTURE?
Hahaha. This is something I’m not going to
reveal…… Ok, we are huge fans of Britney Spears and we’ll try to convince
her to sing for the next album.
8. WHICH ARE THE TOPICS YOU DEAL WITH MUSICALLY?
YOU SURROUND EVERYTHING CONCERNING MORS IN TABULA WITH A DARK ATMOSPHERE.
ARE YOU PESSIMISTS OR DO YOU THINK SUCH THOUGHTS ARE INEVITABLE NOWADAYS?
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE ALBUM TITLE? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO STATE WITH
IT? WHAT’S DEFECTIVE?
Probably hate and disgust about everything
we are all served by the modern media, politics and group religions about
the life they want us to live. Well, if they think they are our pimps we
are not their whores and that’s for sure. Except those who “eat” television
on their daily diet. We are among those who want to see this virtual reality
we live in being blemished.
9. IF YOUR MUSIC WERE AN EMOTION, WHAT WOULD IT
BE? IF IT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
Definitely not huge valleys surrounded by
lakes and birds, or beaches with palm trees. It would show the sick and
devilish face of this modern world we live in, behind the fake veil of
innocence and purity.
10. HAVE YOU GOT ANY PLANS FOR LIVE SHOWS? HOW
WILL YOU PROMOTE YOUR DEBUT ALBUM?
This is our first album, and our moves will
be carefully selected and chosen. If we get the chance to play abroad we’ll
do it, but in Greece I don’t think there’s a great possibility to see us
live. Maybe on a big event, like the Rockwave.
11. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THERE WAS NO MUSIC IN
THE WORLD? HOW AND WHERE WOULD YOU CHANNEL ALL YOUR CREATIVE ENERGY?
No music? Oh shit. I can’t imagine myself
without music. Maybe I’d travel the world to seek the mysteries of other
civilizations, and learn more about their cultures, their modern way of
life.
This is the next thing that fascinates me
more, after music of course.
12. WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST OR FUNNIEST QUESTION YOU’VE
BEEN ASKED ABOUT THE BAND?
“Do you play metal or industrial?”
13. ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE FEEDBACK YOU’VE
RECEIVED SO FAR? WHAT WAS THE MOST FLATTERING AND WHAT THE WORST COMMENT
YOU’VE READ?
So far, we are very much satisfied.
Mostly through Myspace where we have almost daily contact with our fans
worldwide. We are glad to see that over 80% of the feedback and the reviews
we are getting is really awesome. That means that most of the press and
fans appreciate all this hard work we made, and we would really like to
thank all of you guys for your huge support to the band. You know, it's
fucking great and very much encouraging to see our most precious creation
being recognized. Now, it will sound strange but, we also would like to
thank those who gave us negative feedback, because they keep us balanced
in a way, they keep reminding us that we must never be satisfied with ourselves
and always try to do our best.
14. IF YOU HAD A BIG BUDGET TO SHOOT A VIDEO CLIP
AS YOU WANT IT, WHICH SONG OF YOURS WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISUALIZE AND HOW
DO YOU IMAGINE IT TO BE?
We would let our fans decide which song we’d
do a video clip for, through some kind of a contest. The sure thing is
that we’d make it dark and extreme such as the “Underworld” and “Hellraiser”,
sick like “Evil Dead” and futuristic like “The Matrix”.
15. WHAT TITLE DO YOU THINK IS IDEAL FOR YOUR
SOUND AND THE OVERALL BAND ESSENCE?
I would be the last person on this earth who
would try to label our music. Many reviewers in the past had difficulty
in labeling us. The most close definition was given by a reviewer from
the UK, who said “This is cyber dark metal and is definitely the sound
of things to come”. We agree with him. Our music is beyond titles or labels.
We found a new way to represent a new metal genre which can be heard by
all metal fans who are more into the extreme sound, and on the other hand,
to approach fans that listen to more electro genres and appreciate the
extreme sound.
16. WHY DO YOU THINK THE GREEK METAL FANS DON’T
SUPPORT THE NATIVE BANDS AND PREFER THE ONES FROM ABROAD? HAVE YOU FACED
THIS KIND OF “RACISM”?
Come on Christine, this is not “racism”. This
is stupidity and you know it very well. It’s one of the biggest problems
of the G(r)eek metal scene. You have to be “imported” to get some respect.
We’ve been members of this scene since 1989 playing with Crucifix and Regent.
We’ve seen it all and we honestly don’t fucking care what they say. Most
of them are into bands and I completely understand that there’s a huge
competition, but all of them prefer to be at the local pubs and do all
this “beer or coffee philosophy” thinking they are Metallica. Sad but true
guys.
17. BY THE WAY WHAT DOES YOUR MONIKER MEAN AND
HOW DID YOU SELECT IT?
Mors In Tabula means death during a surgical
operation. A very close friend of the band wanted to describe the whole
feeling of our music and he chose that name. Afterwards we were informed
that there’s a TV series by Lars Von Trier called “Riget” which includes
an episode called “Mors In Tabula”, and it is about an infected hospital
where many strange things happen. This is not broadcasted in Greece but
we surely want to watch it. So, if anyone can help us with that he can
contact us.
18. THANK YOU! IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE
TO MENTION?
Thanks for the support and the review of Blemish.
Stay fucking true.
