Lunarsea
Fabiano Romagnoli is the
guitar player of Lunarsea, a powerful new coming act from Italy that released
a while ago their official debut album with the suitable title "Hydrodynamic
Waves". Why is the title suitable? Well simply because these guys deliver
melodic death metal with an intense and aggressive black metal aura. Here's
what more we managed to find out from the questions we asked them...
1. HELLO! “HYDRODYNAMIC WAVE” IS A VERY GOOD
DEBUT ALBUM. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO PREPARE IT? ALSO PRESENT THE CURRENT
LINE-UP.
Hello and thanks for the interview! Our current
line up is: Angelo Musmeci vocals, Fabiano Romagnoli guitars and synths,
Cristian Antolini bass and vocals, Emiliano Pacioni guitars, Claudio Testini
drums.
“Hydrodynamic Wave” includes all our songs
from the early beginning to the present, as there are songs written in
2003, 2004 and 2006.
2. BEFORE YOU FORMED LUNARSEA, YOU HAD PLAYED
IN ANOTHER BAND, CALLED HOLLOWEARTH. WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DID YOU PLAY THERE?
WHICH WAS THE MAIN REASON THAT MADE YOU LEAVE?
Well, in the Hollowearth period we used to
play a sort of power-prog metal and in that band there were three of the
current members of Lunarsea. After we have recorded a promo, and even after
having launched it to the media to be reviewed, we realized that that kind
of sound didn’t interest us anymore as we were more attracted to death
and black influences. As a matter of fact we spent a year to record four
songs that we didn’t like anymore. We were a little bit fool, weren’t we?
3. HAVE YOU RELEASED ANYTHING WITH HOLLOWEARTH?
DOES THE BAND STILL EXIST? DID YOU USE ANY COMPOSITIONS THAT YOU HAD WRITTEN
FOR HOLLOWEARTH IN YOUR NEW BAND?
A song that was included in the Hollowearth
Promo is also included in Hydrodynamic wave but I don’t mean to reveal
which is the song. It’s a mystery, ahahahaah! The funny thing is that people
that has listened to that song in the Hollowearth promo said that the song
was very similar to Gamma Ray or Helloween songs, meanwhile the same song
in Hydrodynamic Wave is considered similar to the In Flames or Children
of Bodom sound! It is strange as the song is quite the same: same riffs,
same lyrics, the only difference is vocals, clean in the old version, growling
in the current one.
4. YOU BELONG TO THE MELODIC DEATH METAL GENRE.
A KIND OF MUSIC THAT IS VERY FAMOUS LATELY. WHICH ARE THE NEW ELEMENTS
THAT LUNARSEA CAN BRING TO THE FANS OF THIS SOUND?
Maybe everything, maybe nothing!
We have tried to put in the songs different
solutions. Clean and growling vocals, synths, prog elements, blast beat
parts and we hope that our listeners reach to focus on them, certainly
the core is melodic death metal.
5. FROM ALL THE SONGS THAT YOU HAVE INCLUDED ON
YOUR DEBUT RELEASE, WHICH ONE WAS THE EASIEST TO COMPOSE AND WHICH ONE
TOOK YOU A LOT OF EFFORT TO FINISH AND WHY?
Well, I think that in “Hydrodynamic Wave”
it is possible to notice how we developed as a band in three years, for
example, the first and easiest song we composed is “Evolution Plan.txt”
where you may find more black elements than death ones, while the more
difficult song to compose and finish was “Qubenauts”, where we tried to
insert in its structure some groove, power and death elements.
6. ITALY HAS MANY AND QUITE GOOD METAL LABELS.
HOW COME AND YOU SIGNED WITH A GREEK LABEL? ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH YOUR
LABEL SO FAR?
When we recorded the “Bio Ashes Halo” promo,
we sent it to a lot of different labels and of course a lot of them were
Italian, but none of them was interested in our sound except for Burning
Star, which contacted us after having read a review about us in a Greek
webzine.
7. ON YOUR CD YOU HAVE ALSO INCLUDED THE VIDEO-CLIP
OF THE “BESIDE THE DRIVER” SONG. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO VISUALIZE THIS SPECIFIC
SONG? WHO IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE VIDEO-CLIP? WILL YOU DO ANY OTHER VIDEOS
FOR YOUR DEBUT RELEASE?
The idea to make a video came from Michael
(the owner of Burning Star) who asked us to realize it to be included as
multimedia element on the CD. We chose “Beside the Driver” as we consider
this song the most representative of our sound. The making of was given
to Federico Ferrari, who works as a cameraman for the realization of documentary
movies for the Italian television. The video was totally paid by us, if
Michael decides to grant us money for other clips we will be happy to act
in a soap too!!!
8. WHICH IS THE MOST FLATTERING COMMENT THAT YOU
HAVE READ ABOUT YOUR MUSIC FROM THE PRESS AND WHICH ONE DISAPPOINTED YOU
AND WHY?
The best comment came from a German webzine,
which considered our music as “a parallel universe in death metal music”,
while the worst comments came from Italy!!! Where for the major part of
the press we are just one of the clones of the Gotheburg Sound.
9. CAN YOU NAME 5 ALBUMS THAT YOU CONSIDER INFLUENTIAL
TO THE BAND’S SOUND?

10. WHO WRITES THE LYRICS AND HOW IMPORTANT ARE
THEY TO YOU? DO YOU LIKE TO WRITE ABSTRACT LYRICS AND MAKE THE LISTENER
THINK OR DO YOU WRITE FOR SPECIFIC THEMES?
The lyrics are written by Cristian Antolini
and normally they are conceived as the latter element of a song, as we
first think of the music. Of course they are abstract lyrics which speak
about religion, technologies, day-by-day life, love.
11. HAVE YOU DONE ANY LIVE SHOWS SO FAR? IS IT
POSSIBLE TO COME TO GREECE FOR A LIVE-SHOW?
We did different gigs in Rome but we never
went outside Italy. Probably we will come to Greece for a live show in
the beginning of the next year for the Burning Star Road Showcase 2007,
so come to see us and bring us some souvlaki!
12. HAVE YOU PREPARED ANY NEW SONGS? WHEN SHOULD
WE WAIT FOR YOUR NEW RELEASE?
We have started the process of composition
for the new songs and we believe that the new album will see the light
in the early 2008.
