Kryzalid from France have
all the elements that a new band needs to be set apart. They are exceptional
musicians and their thrash metal sound is deeply rooted in the 80's but
with a modern approach. After listening to their very interesting debut
album, we decided to do an interview with them in order to know this promissing
band better. Here you will read what we got as answers to our questions...
1. HELLO! “SECOND LIFE” IS A VERY PROMISING
DEBUT ALBUM. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO COMPOSE THE SONGS AND RECORD THEM
IN THE STUDIO?
Oliverstciks: Hell’o and thank you for compliment!
The time to compose and prepare our first album represents approximately
one year of serious work, then we have included the four “beginning” demo
tracks that we have lightly improved.
The recordings didn't last long, due to lack
of money... So we can say: two days for bass/drum, two other days for the
rhythm guitar and approximately one week for vocals, guitar solos and other
arrangements. You can add ten days for the mix and mastering.
2. ARE THERE ANY CHANGES THAT YOU’D LIKE TO DO
ON THE ALBUM OR ARE YOU COMPLETELY SATISFIED?
Oliverstciks: By looking back we have a few
regrets about some vocals performances and maybe about the overall sound
that is too ”live”... Perfection takes time and we known that this first
album is not THE perfection but we are satisfied for a first one (not completely
for sure...).
3. THE ALBUM HAS THE TITLE “SECOND LIFE”. WHAT
EXACTLY DO YOU WANT TO SAY WITH THAT? SOMEHOW THE TITLE SOUNDS VERY OPTIMISTIC,
SOMETHING LIKE A SECOND CHANCE. DON’T YOU AGREE?
Oliverstciks: This title is connected with
the name and the past of the band: when I joined KRYZALID three years ago,
it was a big motivation for the rest of the band, we recorded a demo in
the next months and after we have directly composed new songs for the first
album... it was like a second life! And more this title corresponds perfectly
to the name of the band.
Nico: A second life is a second chance, isn't
it? In fact, the "Second Life" song is not really optimistic, it takes
its substance from Faust's story. Like Oliversticks said, it is also a
wink to the name of the band.
4. SO SINCE WE TALK ABOUT SECOND LIVES, LET ME
ASK YOU THAT: IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO LIVE ANOTHER KIND OF LIFE THAN THE
ONE YOU LIVE, WHAT KIND OF LIFE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Oliverstciks: Wow! Heu... for me, something
authentic, close to nature, disconnected of all the occidental obligation...
like... an Indian !
Nico: I would like to be born in the London
in the 60s, begin the guitar at 5 years of age, and play with Steve Harris
when I'd be 15...
5. THOUGH I LIKED YOUR MUSIC, SOMETIMES I HAD
THE FEELING THAT YOU HAVE OVERDONE IT WITH THE TECHNICAL PARTS. DO YOU
PLAN TO REDUCE THEM IN THE FUTURE OR DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE THE TRADEMARK
OF THE BAND’S SOUND?
Oliverstciks: We make technical music, it’s
a fact and you can’t dissociate technical parts from our music but we are
conscious that can be bad for the music. New songs will be more compact
and direct I think...
Nico: We don't write a song thinking “that
must be the more technical song of the thrash planet”. It is true that
music on "Second Life" is technical but thrash metal is a technical music
and I don't believe that we are more technical than the average. I think
next songs will have a greater maturity and you will have no more this
feeling of overdone technicality.
6. LET’S SUPPOSE THAT YOU WERE ASKED TO REVIEW
YOUR ALBUM. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TRYING TO BE AS OBJECTIVE AS POSSIBLE? WHAT’S
THE BEST AND WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF YOUR MUSIC, ACCORDING TO YOU?

you the worst part of Oliversticks :)))
7. BEFORE THE “SECOND LIFE” ALBUM YOU HAVE
RELEASED A SELF FINANCED ONE. DO YOU PLAN TO RE-RELEASE IT OR WILL YOU
INCLUDE THE SONGS IN FUTURE RELEASES?
Oliverstciks: No plan about that because we
have already included the demo tracks on this album. So, next album will
contain 100% new songs.
8. IN A FEW WORDS GIVE US THE MEANING OF EACH
SONG THAT YOU HAVE INCLUDED ON YOUR NEW ALBUM…
Nico: “Your scar is mine” and “Sadness” are
reflexions on ones self, frames of mind ; “Walk or Croak” is based on "The
long march" of Stephen King. “Little Savage” and “Freaks” talk about differences.
“To remain in obscurity” asks question if the notoriety is the final aim
in artistic creation. “Second Life” talks about the moment when you
must pay in your life a past choice. “Red bloodbath” deals with the American
Indian slaughter.
9. DO YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC METHOD THAT YOU FOLLOW
DURING THE SONGWRITING PROCESS? HAVE YOU NOTICED WHICH THINGS GIVE YOU
INSPIRATION TO WRITE MUSIC?
Nico: There is no method really. Ideas come
from guitarists and then we work together in the rehearsals to finish to
build the song. For my part, I have no particular things that give me inspiration,
but my state of mind and music that I heard during the song writing have
a great influence on me.
10. ON YOUR NEW ALBUM YOU HAVE A COVER OF THE
FAMOUS “ALISON HELL” OF ANNIHILATOR. SUPPOSE THAT YOUR LABEL ASKS YOU TO
RELEASE AN ALBUM WHERE YOU WILL DO COVERS OF BANDS THAT YOU LIKE, WHICH
BANDS AND SONGS WOULD YOU LIKE TO COVER?
11. WHICH IS THE WORST AND WHICH THE BEST COMMENT
YOU HAVE EVER READ FOR YOUR MUSIC AND WHY?
Nico: There are a lot of best comments about
our music and it is difficult to give the best, for example I think that
“best thrash album of the year !”, doesn't need any comments. For the worst,
I think it is a comment on the vocals. The guy made a comparison that I
prefer to forget.
12. DO YOU WATCH THE WORLD CUP GAMES? WHAT DO
YOU THINK ABOUT FRANCE? WHO DO YOU BELIEVE WILL REACH TO THE FINALS?
Oliverstciks: I’m not a football fan but now,
in our society, world cup can’t be neglected! No choice then. I don’t have
to tell you that France has a great team with great players... So, I think
final it's not a dream! Remember 1998...
Nico: I think the great problem of “the blue”
is in their minds. So after a difficult entry in the tournament, France
begins to become strong and develop a good game. We have completely overcome
the Spanish team which was one the best teams of the world cup. So, if
we win against Brazil on Saturday, and we can, we will be a serious candidate
for the final victory. But, what is doing the Greek team?
13. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU’D LIKE TO ADD AND
