There are some bands that
give the reviewers a hard time when trying to describe their sound and
their influences, so I guess the best way to find about them is by reading
their interviews and checking their music out! Ladies and gentlemen this
is In Tormentata Quiete!!!
1. HELLO! HOW ARE YOU? YOU HAVE RECENTLY RELEASED
YOUR FIRST ALBUM. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT? NOW THAT IS COMPLETED DO YOU
BELIEVE THAT IT REPRESENTS IN A GOOD WAY THE EFFORTS OF THE BAND THROUGHOUT
ALL THESE YEARS OF YOUR EXISTENCE? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO
CHANGE?
Hi Nikos! Well finally we are out with our
first album and we are very satisfied as it turns out, we spent a lot of
time in the studio to have the best result and a killer sound. It's not
so easy to have the best when you are 8 people in a band and mix the sounds
of everyone but we made a great pre recording session job so it was quite
easy to set everything. We stayed in studio 2 months more or less and I
wouldn't change any notes.
2. YOUR MUSIC IS NOT THE TYPICAL BLACK METAL.
IF SOMEONE THAT HASN’T LISTENED TO YOUR STUFF ASKED YOU TO DESCRIBE YOUR
SOUND, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL HIM?
He he he, hard question! Well ITQ play what
ITQ play, I mean...we have a very personal style and many people try to
compare us with many bands but it's restrictive. Listening to ITQ it's
not simple 'cos we have many influences and you can hear in our songs many
different styles from jazz to metal, from folk to rock. If someone
hasn't listened to our music yet you can download our first promo CD from
our website to have an idea but our new album is much more mature and refined.
3. YOU ARE A NEW BAND AND I WOULD LIKE HERE TO
TELL US IN A FEW WORDS, YOUR STORY SO FAR AND PRESENT THE CURRENT LINE-UP.
DID YOU PLAY IN OTHER BANDS BEFORE FORMING IN TORMENTATA QUIETE?
The ITQ project was born in 1998, the idea
was to mix typical south Italian typical folk music with metal and power.
Lorenzo and Antonio from 'As You In Agony Cry' band started to write
down the first songs from the promo 'I Tre Attimi del Silenzio' using a
piano and a classical guitar then Francesco from 'Society' and Marco from
'Imago Animi' respectively drummer and singer joined the band and later
on, me and Gianni. Our aim is to transmit with our music emotions because
we play music with our hearts!
4. OK THE BAND NAME IS STRANGE AND DIFFICULT TO
PRONOUNCE. CAN YOU TELL ME ITS MEANING AND HOW YOU CHOSE IT? DOES IT HAVE
A SYMBOLIC MEANING TO YOU?
In Tormentata Quiete just means 'In Tormented
Peace', the name is Lorenzo's idea 'cos when he firstly listened to songs
recorded he felt tormented but at the same quiet and I really agree with
him!
5. DO YOU THINK THAT A PERSON THAT WILL LISTEN
TO THE NAME OF THE BAND WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT KIND OF MUSIC YOU PLAY?
No, even if you were Italian you couldn't
understand what music we play, it's not a typical metal name for a band
but I think the music is more important than the name.
6. THE BRUTAL VOCAL LINES THAT YOU USE REMINDED
ME OF CRADLE OF FILTH. IS THIS BAND AMONG YOUR INFLUENCES? WHICH ARTISTS
AND BANDS HAVE INFLUENCED YOU AND IN WHICH WAY?
Marco (screams and growls) is not very happy
when someone say he sings like COF singer, first of all 'cos he has never
wanted to copy him and secondly because his singing style is screaming
but not so hysterical as Dani's. I think noone in the band was influenced
by CoF, there are many bands we like but playing like an other band it's
not what we want to do and if you listen carefully to our songs you'll
notice they have their own sound!
7. DO YOU REMEMBER, WHICH WAS THE METAL ALBUM
THAT YOU LISTENED TO AND MADE YOU DECIDE TO FORM A BAND? NOW THAT YOU WORK
ON A MORE PROFESSIONAL LEVEL, ARE ALL THE THINGS AS YOU HAVE IMAGINED THEM
TO BE?
“Symbolic” by Death changed my musical way,
because despite heavy riffs and death bites it's a very emotional and deep
album. I imagined myself on a world wide tour supporting Alice Cooper,
but it was a dream fortunately! ehehehehe. Anyway, we are very happy with
our new album and media and fans response, as I said our first aim is to
give people emotions and record a new album.
8. ALL OF YOUR LYRICS ARE WRITTEN IN ITALIAN LANGUAGE.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO DO THAT? AREN’T YOU AFRAID THAT THIS MIGHT BE AN
OBSTACLE FOR THE METAL FANS THAT ARE MOSTLY USED TO LISTEN TO THE ENGLISH
LANGUAGE? DID YOUR LABEL PUSH YOU IN ANY WAY TO USE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE?
Using yuor mother tongue is something you
feel inside, many famous Scandinavian or German bands use it and I think
it suits their music as Italian suits ours. I know it can be an obstacle
for fans who don't speak Italian but we think it has a great history and
above all a great musicality so it is the perfect choicee. The label Dawn
of Sadness liked a lot our way of singing and the use of 3 singers interpreting
the songs in Italian. We have composed the songs to be sung in Italian
any other way wouldn't be the ITQ way.
9. SINCE MY ITALIAN IS NOT SO GOOD AND THE LYRICS
ARE ALWAYS OF AN INTEREST TO ME, I WOULD LIKE YOU TO TELL ME IN A FEW WORDS
WHICH THE THEME OF EACH SONG THAT YOU HAVE INCLUDED IN YOUR DEBUT ALBUM
IS.
In the song 'La Realtà' the man wakes
up, in 'Zeus' through art he apprehends, in 'Phatovarva' he loses his innocence,
in 'Chiaroscuro' he rediscovers his spirituality, in 'L'Albero' he looks
at his battles, in 'Rosso Sangue' he fights his battles, and finally in
'Piccole Variazioni' he gets the battle consequences.
10. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LYRICS AND WHICH
ARE YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION?
Antonio (keybords) writes all the lyrics,
the main theme is man in his kaleidoscopic vision. Mainly they deal with
the moment that man discovers the great lie hidden behind life.
11. ONE OTHER THING THAT I NOTICED FROM THE PROMO
THAT YOUR LABEL SENT ME, IS THAT NEXT TO EACH SONG TITLE, YOU HAVE A PICTURE.
WHY DID YOU DO THAT AND HOW ARE THEY CONNECTED WITH THE SONGS?
The whole artwork was done by our graphic
designer Luca Antoniazzi and the photographer Alex, they spent lot of time
listening to our album and trying to reflect with images the meaning of
every song. For example the smiling skulls of Rosso Sangue represent death
and the unluck faith of the man in his daily battle.
12. WHAT KIND OF REVIEWS DID YOU RECEIVE SO FAR?
IS THERE AN ELEMENT IN YOU MUSIC THAT YOU THINK PASSED UNNOTICED FROM MOST
OF THE REVIEWERS?
In Tormentata Quiete is not a simple CD to
listen to, if you like music you will like it but if you listen what others
want you to listen to then ITQ is not your CD. We had amazing reviews from
the Italian press and webzines, from Greece to Chile through Brasil and
the UK and compliments from Siberia too, so we are very happy and
satisfied!!!! We have so many reviews that nothing passes unnoticed, personally
I didn't like some reviewers who tried to compare us to someone else and
judging our personal style...maybe 'cos we don't play like other typical
and classic bands?
13. IMAGINE THAT THE LABEL GIVES YOU A BIG AMOUNT
OF MONEY TO MAKE A VIDEO-CLIP. WHICH SONG WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY? HOW
DO YOU IMAGINE THE VIDEO-CLIP TO BE?
Uh uh!!!!! Well, I absolutely don't like the
classical metal videoclip with forest, battle, swords and stuff like that
so it would be a very hi tech video but recorded in a city with hi speed
motion images...difficult to explain but my mind still know what to do...
I'm sure the other guys of the band would kill me ehehehe. I'd like to
choose my favourite that is “Piccole Variazioni” but it las 6'18'' and
it's not very commercial...other way 'L'Albero' is the more aggressive
and short song perfect for a videoclip!
