Enuma Elish
Enuma Elish are newcomers from Spain that deliver a fresh and really unique kind of music, a combination that dwells somewhere between metal and gothic rock. Although they are just in their first steps, they seem pretty determined to release quality works and establish their personal sound.

1. FIRST OF ALL, GIVE US A SHORT BAND BIO AND INTRODUCE YOURSELVES TO THE READERS…
The band was founded in 2003 by Javier Morales (guitar), Fede Agudo (bass) and Sara de Andrés (lead vocals). Later on, Teo Suazo (drums) joined the band, making up the definitive formation. For the time being, we have recorded two demos: Live Forever (2004) and Second (2005) and the reviews of both of them (in Spain and other European countries) have been really good; we also have won a few band competitions in our country. Moreover, we intend to record our first album before the end of this year…….
2. LET’S SUPPOSE THAT YOU WERE ASKED TO REVIEW YOUR DEMO CD “SECOND”. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TRYING TO BE AS OBJECTIVE AS POSSIBLE?
Definitely our last demo is the result of an evolution into a more personal, fresher and powerful style. Every band has to improve with each work, showing the evolution and maturity of the group itself that reflects on the new themes. It is an obligation that all musicians should demand from themselves, you know: follow your intuition and don’t just stand there with your arms crossed.
3. WHICH ARE THE DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN “SECOND” AND YOUR PREVIOUS DEMO CD?
Our first demo was, so to speak, a little ingenious, the style wasn’t already defined and maybe the band’s identity can’t be clearly appreciated. Besides that, the lack of experience didn’t permit the recording to be better. Nevertheless we are very proud of Live Forever; we’ve learnt a lot from it and it was the first step of our, surely long, trajectory.
4. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO SOMEONE THAT HASN’T LISTENED TO YOU YET? GIVE REASONS WHY THE METALLERS SHOULD CHECK YOU OUT?
The main reason is that we are the best metal band you’ve ever heard in your life! Apart from that we think we really have a very personal style, a mixture of metal and gothic rock that stresses the combination of different voices in the chorus, making them direct, powerful and a little epic. Furthermore Sara’s voice is unique and the rest of the members are great musicians. Is it enough for you?
5. WHAT’S ACCORDING TO YOU THE BEST AND WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF YOUR MUSIC? ARE THERE ANY ELEMENTS YOU’D LIKE TO ADD OR EXPERIMENT WITH IN YOUR MUSIC?
Definitely, the best part of our music is that we do something which we really enjoy; it is very satisfying because above all we do it just for pleasure. We don’t see it as a means to get money. The worst part maybe is to discover that in music business not everybody thinks like that and people juggle with other interests which have nothing to do with music. In respect of things that we’d like to experiment with: of course that if we are interested in something, we just try it and if it fits with our music, perfect! Enuma Elish are four different persons with different likings so we try to please everybody.
6. TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE LYRICS. WHICH ARE YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION AND WHICH ARE THE TOPICS YOU MAINLY DEAL WITH?
As we have said before we are four different characters but we like to compose about the same topics: love, hate, eternity, and destiny. Our inspiration is the result of our cultural background and we are very fond of “dark” authors as: Poe, Nietzsche ……… and, of course, the ones who wrote Enuma Elish (the Epic Poem the band is named after). Apart from that, we want to add that English is not our native language and it means a kind of challenge to express our feelings in that language, at least we try hard.
7. HAVE YOU SENT YOUR DEMO TO ANY LABELS? ARE YOU UNDER NEGOTIATION WITH ANY LABEL? WITH WHAT CRITERIA WILL YOU SIGN A DEAL?
Yes we are under negotiations with some labels but we have very clear ideas of what we want. Our principal aim is promotion abroad. Everybody can record an album but the most important thing is to make one’s name known to the rest of the world. By the way, if any label is interested in the band, it shouldn’t be shy and should contact us!
8. WHAT KIND OF FEEDBACK HAVE YOU RECEIVED SO FAR FROM THE PRESS AND THE METALLERS? ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE COMMENTS YOU RECEIVE?
We are always satisfied with the comments we receive, not only with good but also with the bad ones. In fact, these are the only ones that make you excel yourself and try to do things better. But, undoubtedly our favorite comments are those on our personal style (at least in Spain).
9. HAVE YOU GOT ANY PLANS FOR LIVE SHOWS? WHAT SHOULD THE FANS EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU?
We want our shows to be special and not to leave anyone indifferent. All the hours that are passed rehearsing and composing have to be shown within a short lapse of time and it has to be perfect.
10. IF YOUR MUSIC WERE AN EMOTION, WHAT WOULD IT BE? IF IT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
If our music were an emotion, it would be power and if it were a painting it would portray a volcano spitting fire.
11. WHAT TITLE WOULD YOU LIKE THIS INTERVIEW TO HAVE?
A star is born ……no just joking. Mmmmm… maybe: Enuma Elish, changing stereotypes.
12. THANK YOU! HAVE I FORGOTTEN TO ASK YOU ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO MENTION?
First of all, thank you for this interview and finally, the only thing we would like to add is that we will keep on rocking whatever it happens because we do it just for pleasure.
