Disharmonic is a band that
I follow since its beginning so I'm able to see and realize the evolution
that is taking place within the band from every aspect. The band members'
skills have improved along with the compositions and even the lyrics...
everything has become more straightforward and accessible to a wider range
of audience. So, read below what Apostolis has answered to us about Disharmonic's
past, present and future endeavors...
1.HELLO APOSTOLI! YOUR NEW CD "BY YOUR SIDE"
BROUGHT THE BAND ONE STEP FORWARD. CAN YOU TELL ME WHICH THE REASONS THAT
HELPED YOU IMPROVE AS A BAND WERE?
Hello Nick! I hope you’re doing fine! Well,
I must agree that the new stuff is much better from the previous demo,
but, moreover, I think that there is a lot of work we have to do in order
to reach the level we want.
2.WHAT HAPPENED IN THE MEAN TIME BETWEEN YOUR
PREVIOUS AND YOUR NEW CD? DID YOU HAVE ANY LINE - UP CHANGES?
I think we became more mature, both musically
and lyrically. We had some good ideas and the new stuff was a physical
evolution for the band. No, we don’t have any line-up changes, the disharmonic
parts remain the same.
3.I THINK THAT "BY YOUR SIDE" IS RELEASED UNDER
THE COOPERATION OF MANY LABELS. CAN YOU TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT THIS
ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE EFFORT?
Yeah, our new mini CD is a 100% Do it yourself
release, in co-production with 4 distros/labels. We co-operated with some
good friends from Greece, such as Alex (Cabal – autonomous state of mind
distro) and Michael (Tutupaci distro), plus a mate from Italy who owns
A Pecervo Autoproduzioni distro/label. The 4th distro is mine, hXf prodaxionz.
I believe that this way is the best one to release your stuff without the
help of any corporate label. Co-production is based in solidarity and trust
and many foreign bands work like this. Unfortunately it isn’t much popular
in Greece, yet.
4.LET'S TALK A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR LYRICS. CAN YOU
TELL US IN A FEW WORDS WHICH THE THEME OF EACH SONG THAT YOU HAVE INCLUDED
IN YOUR NEW RELEASE IS?
There are some lyrical explanations in the
booklet of the CD. I guess you have a promo one, so you don’t have the
lyrics, sorry… Well, I am the one responsible for the lyrics part in our
new songs. Let’s start! First track “Stand by me” is the most emotional
song Disharmonic ever wrote! It’s about love and loneliness, you know,
there are times that you feel so alone and you want a person to take care
of you, to express your feelings to or just to hang around together. The
next song is called “H8U” and as far as you can understand is about hate
(totally opposed to the previous track) and betrayal. It is based on thousands
of true stories including fake friends and a life full of lies. “Fear My
Thoughts” consists of some personal thoughts and it’s about painful memories,
anxiety, twinges of consciousness, about the good and evil side I (we?)
and their continuous strife inside my mind. “Swallow Your Integrity” is
for selling-outs, people who used to talk too much about their beliefs
and now they betray them, they compromise in order to “survive”… The next
song is called “Global Unity” and is about the “big brother era” we have
already entered, cameras everywhere, police state, media oppression and
brainwashed minds. Last song is “These Days” and it is dedicated
to hardcore music and way of life. Hardcore is a whole movement and not
just piercings, tattoos and clothes. There is a hidden bonus track, too,
figure out the lyrics by yourself!
5.WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE THROUGH
YOUR MUSIC: TO SPREAD YOUR MESSAGE OR MAKE PEOPLE THINK ABOUT THE PROBLEMS
OF THE MODERN SOCIETY?
Our main goal is to have fun! We don’t use
the music for propaganda, if you understand what I mean. Besides having
fun, we definitely want to spread our message, especially a positive way
of thinking and treating life. Moreover, our music is a great outlet for
us, we need to express our feelings and beliefs and share them with everyone.
6.RECENTLY YOU HAVE DONE A LOT OF LIVE SHOWS HERE
IN GREECE. CAN YOU MENTION A FEW PLACES THAT YOU HAVE PLAYED? IN WHICH
PLACE DO YOU THINK YOU MADE YOUR BEST APPEARANCE? IS IT POSSIBLE TO DO
LIVE SHOWS ABROAD OR IS IT SOMETHING VERY DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE?
We try to play everywhere, we love live shows!
We played in Athens, Drama, Komotini and Deskati this summer and we had
a great time during all 4 shows. Live shows are the best way to communicate
with people, meet old and new dudes and have fun. We try to do our best
every time we play. Next shows confirmed are today (!) in Kozani and 2-3
dates during November in Athens and Patra. I am working on a schedule for
some shows abroad, it is possible to play in Germany and UK the near future.
We had announced a 3 days mini tour in south Italy the previous July but
it was cancelled. Surely, it’s very difficult to play abroad but I think
that if you want so much something you can make it!
7.APOSTOLI YOU ALSO RUN A DISTRIBUTION LABEL,
SO CAN YOU TELL US SOME BANDS YOU DISTRIBUTE AND YOU LIKE A LOT? WHICH
ARE THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS THAT A PERSON THAT WANTS TO OPEN A DISTRO LABEL
HAS TO CONFRONT?
Yeah, I run hXf prodaxionz 2 years now. It’s
a small DIY distro and a kind of a label (co-produced Disharmonic, Big
shave and Arsenico CDs and released 3 CD-R compilations, till now). It’s
a bit difficult to run a distro because you need money and a lot of free
time, but you can start from distributing your band’s or your friends’
band’s release and continue furthermore. I’m currently distributing some
great bands such as Censored Sound, For What Is Worth and Oi!lers from
Greece plus Spring Of Rafe (It), The Third Memory (Fr), Countdown Records
(It) and more.
8.HOW DID THE PRESS AND FANS RECEIVE YOUR NEW
WORK SO FAR? IS THERE AN ELEMENT IN YOUR MUSIC THAT YOU THINK MANY OF THE
REVIEWERS DIDN'T MENTION? WHICH WAS THE WORST REVIEW THAT YOU RECEIVED
SO FAR?
There’s not a lot of feedback till now, we
released at the end of July our CD and August/September is a period of
vacation and exams for us so we didn’t have enough time to send out all
the promos we want. We are now working on the promotion part. Till now
we got 3 reviews and 2 interviews and we are happy from the feedback. It
depends on the reviewers and the stuff they are reviewing, you know, a
metal webzine cares more about the quality of the production and the riffs
while a hardcore one cares more about lyrics and attitude. We got 2-3 very
bad reviews for the previous demo, but it’s ok.
9.HAVE YOU DONE ANY VIDEO - CLIPS? IMAGINE THAT
YOU HAVE A LOT OF MONEY TO DO AN EXPENSIVE VIDEO - CLIP. WHICH SONG WOULD
YOU CHOOSE AND WHY? HOW DO YOU IMAGINE THE VIDEO - CLIP TO BE?
No, we didn’t have the chance to do a video-clip.
I would choose “Swallow Your Integrity” and I think it would be a very
“riot” clip…
10. I THINK THAT DISHARMONIC WANT TO HAVE A COMPLETE
CONTROL ON THEIR MUSIC AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF YOUR WORK. DOES THAT MEAN
THAT YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED IN SIGNING A CONTRACT WITH A LABEL?
You know, a lot of people ask this question
to me and I always answer like this; we don’t want to release our music
in co-operation with a big, corporate label, we prefer piracy, hehe! Seriously,
we would like to co-operate with an independent, DIY label which will help
us spread our music and messages to more people than we can do.
11.LET ME TAKE THE PREVIOUS QUESTION A STEP FURTHER...
WHAT DO YOU WANT A LABEL TO OFFER YOU IN ORDER TO SIGN A DEAL WITH THEM?
The owners of the label must really care about
our music. Moreover, we would like a good production & distribution,
plus the ability for booking a tour.
12.RECENTLY I READ THAT THE LABELS WILL HUNT THE
USERS THAT DOWNLOAD MP3 SONGS FROM THE INTERNET. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT
IT? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT INTERNET HELPED OR DAMAGED MOST OF THE BANDS AND
WHY?
I think that big labels kill music and not
piracy. Music is not a corporate product, but a way of communication for
people. Free downloading is the best way to hear a lot of new great bands.
I can assure you that everyone who really cares about underground bands
will buy their releases. I don’t think that musicians such as Jennifer
Lopez and Metallica are in a great need of money that they are so seriously
damaged by piracy… Of course, internet helps new bands.
