Deathwork
Deathwork is a new Italian
based band that has set as their goal to bring the old ways back to us...
To all of us that still enjoy the old fashioned death and thrash metal
sound. Their singer Fabrizio is here to offer you a guided tour to Deathwork's
world.
1. HELLO! “EVOLVE TO EXTINGUISH” IS A VERY
GOOD RELEASE, BUT BEFORE WE TALK ABOUT IT, I WOULD LIKE YOU TO TELL US
IN A FEW WORDS WHICH THE MOST IMPORTANT ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE BAND SO FAR
ARE AND PLEASE ALSO PRESENT THE CURRENT LINE-UP.
Hi Nikos, here is Fabrizio (singer). I’ll
start by saying that Deathwork were founded in the summer of 2002 after
the spilt up of my last thrash band “Hammerhead”. After several changes
of line-up, the band is now: Fabrizio Malaponte (vocals), Riccardo Costantino
(bass), Luigi Oreto (guitars), Christian Balsamo (guitars), Armando Alioto
(drums). In September 2003 the “Dissolution of Eternity” demo was released,
a lot of gigs with other bands of the Sicilian and Italian underground
scenes to promote the demo and spread out our name. Good feedback and passion
have allowed us after two years to release a new killer work called “Evolve
to Extinguish”…
2. “EVOLVE TO EXTINGUISH” IS YOUR SECOND RELEASE.
CAN YOU COMPARE IT WITH YOUR FIRST ONE, “DISSOLUTION OF ETERNITY” AND TELL
US WHICH THE SIMILARITIES AND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM ARE?
Well, surely “E.T.E.” is a more mature production
than the “D.O.E.”. The songs are better structured, better arranged, faster
and you can find a more obvious distinction among the thrash and death
influences. All these make the release more varied. Also the recordings
were more professional…but “D.O.E.” was our first release and as a first
step surely was good. I repeat, “E.T.E.” is a more mature production but
our sound and influences are always the same…a good thrash death metal
attack!
3. NOW THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT HAVEN’T LISTENED
TO YOUR MUSIC YET AND MAY READ THIS INTERVIEW. SO CAN YOU DESCRIBE IN A
FEW LINES YOUR MUSIC TO THEM AND TELL THEM WHICH THE ELEMENTS THAT MAKE
YOUR SOUND SO INTERESTING ARE?
Our music is a true extreme load of metal.
A right mix of old waves especially of thrash and death metal. Catchy and
thrash timeless riffs brutalized by growling vocals and deadly assaults
from the drums. The most important element of our sound is the way we mix
these influences. Not precisely thrash/death but thrash AND death! This
makes songs flow faster without ever being boring.
4. LATELY, I HAVE NOTICED THAT MANY NEW BANDS
TEND TO TURN BACK TO THE ROOTS OF HEAVY METAL IN ORDER TO CREATE THEIR
OWN SOUND. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THIS HAPPEN?
Maybe ‘cause old school is never ending. Is
the origin, the roots of all, the bridge to all extreme new kinds of music.
There’s a wish to keep alive old sonorities, reviving the past, also ‘cause
new sounds aren’t always satisfactory, often sound too and so far from
the good and true metal waves. And as long as there are people who still
play and like to listen to these old fashioned sounds, then the old school
flame will stand alight.
5. I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT IN MY OPINION THESE
MODERN PRODUCTIONS WITH THE USE OF THE TRIGGERS AND ALL THESE EFFECTS HAVE
TIRED ME A BIT. THEY GIVE ME THEY IMPRESSION THAT ALL THE BANDS, SOMEHOW,
SOUND THE SAME… WHICH AR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT THEME?
I think perfectly like you. All these effects,
digital recordings and others modern samples sounds so false to me. I see
that nowadays the bands need to release good recordings, more professional
and competitive than ever but I just prefer analogue to digital. These
bands these releases sound all the same! So cold and too clean, at this
day with a computer you can transform bullshit to a good release… I want
good metal done with heat, sweat and a lot of beers. I just prefer to listen
to all the instruments not triggers and effects.
6. WHICH ALBUMS OR ARTISTS DO YOU THINK THAT HAVE
INFLUENCED THE SOUND OF DEATHWORK?
Surely all 80’s metal kinds. In our songs
you can find influences of thrash, death, early grindcore but if you listen
with attention you will also find heavy riffs and solos. If I have to mention
some names these would be…old Sepultura, Slayer and Death, Bolt Thrower,
Sodom, Unleashed and much more.
7. IN YOUR BIO I READ THAT YOU HAVE IMPRESSED
THE PEOPLE IN ITALY WITH YOUR LIVE SHOWS. SO WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU OFFER
AS A BAND IN YOUR LIVE SHOWS?
Only destructive waves! A massive thrash death
load to bang the head non stop. People want confusion, headbanging and
fun and we give this. Violence, old school metal and much, much and so
much beer, this is what we can offer.
8. HOW COME AND YOU HAVEN’T SIGNED A CONTRACT
WITH A LABEL YET? WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU WANT FROM A LABEL TO OFFER YOU IN
ORDER TO SIGN WITH THEM?
May be I think ‘cause at this day no one (specially
in Italy) wants to give trust to the new underground bands playing old
school metal music. Even more producers think about the sales…they think
our way of playing is good but too old! We’re still in search… We want
to find a label that would point on us with passion and trust, able to
produce our coming releases, then no rip-offs and especially no compromises
about our music!!!
9. WHICH WAS THE WEIRDEST QUESTION THAT THEY HAVE
EVER ASKED YOU IN AN INTERVIEW?
At the last interview I answered ahahah…they
asked me if I like and what I think about hardcore porn movies. A
question so strange and far from the musical arguments…
10. DO YOU REMEMBER A REVIEW THAT YOU READ AND
YOU THOUGHT THAT THE REVIEWER DIDN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT EXACTLY YOU WANT TO
DO WITH YOUR MUSIC?
As ever ahah…no I joke! Fortunately we’ve
received good rates from Italian and not only zines also overseas but considering
our old way to play and think of the music, sometimes some reviewers don’t
see what we do and especially what we want with our music.
11. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND GOOD LUCK WITH
THE BAND! THE LAST LINES BELONG TO YOU…
We would like to thank you for the support
and this space on Behind The Veil zine. True hails to the Greek metalheads
inviting them to listen to us and check out our official website at www.deathwork.com
or www.myspace.com/deathw.
Thrash on!!!
