Our third interview with
Cyril finds him at his best, having just released a full of inspiration
album. So, below you can read the result of this interesting interview
that satisfied us with the variety of the intriguing and thought provoking
subjects that have been discussed...
1. HELLO CYRIL! “SERVATIS A MALEFICUM” IS
PROBABLY YOUR BEST RELEASE UP TO NOW. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT?
Hello Nikos & everybody at Behind The
Veil... Well, I think it’s my best release. It’s true, this record has
a greater sound than the others, & the compositions are more complete.
But I have a weakness for my second album ‘Eternity’, specially the first
track...
2. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO COMPOSE AND ARRANGE
THE SONGS? DID YOU HAVE ANY HELP IN THE STUDIO FROM OTHER MUSICIANS?
Well, you know, I compose & arrange all
my music, when I arrive at the studio, every track is ready to be recorded.
It takes from the start to the end about 1 year to make an album.
3. “SERVATIS A MALEFICUM” IS IN MY OPINION MORE
INTO CLASSIC HEAVY METAL THAN THE NEOCLASSICAL METAL AND ALSO YOUR DARKER
ALBUM. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
Ho I don’t really know, when I start to compose
a release, I let my inspiration guide me you know... So for ‘Servatis a
Maleficum’, it was a flashback I think so, it’s heavier, as the eighties
album of Macalpine or Taffola you know. A kind of return to the beginning!
4. NOW ABOUT THE TITLE “SERVATIS A MALEFICUM”…
CAN YOU TELL TO THOSE THAT ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE LATIN WHAT IT MEANS
AND HOW YOU CHOSE THIS TITLE?
Yes it’s Latin words, it means ‘Save us from
the evil’. I had this idea one day, in front of my TV you know, and I saw
all the tragedy of this world, the war, the tsunami, earthquakes, etc...
& I said to myself that this earth is under the devil’s power... So
I like Latin language, and I’m thinking to give to my new album this title...
5. SOMEHOW, I HAVE THE SENSE WITH THE TITLE OF
THE ALBUM THAT YOU TURN AGAINST THE ORGANIZED RELIGION. AM I RIGHT? DO
YOU BELIEVE THAT EVEN PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN ADVANCED TECHNOLOGICAL COUNTRIES
LIKE FRANCE ARE STILL RULED BY RELIGION?
Well, you know I’m a Christian, I believe
in god, other people believe in another gods, some people don’t believe
in anything... I think it’s not a question of advanced technological countries
or anything like this, it’s in the people’s hearts you know, not in any
technology... God is the greatest question for mankind since the beginning
of this universe.
6. TO ESCAPE FROM ALL THESE QUESTIONS. TELL ME
WHAT MUSIC YOU LISTEN TO LATELY…
So, I listen to some French singers &
bands, I love new wave music like Depeche Mode or Talk Talk, classical
music specially Mozart, I don’t like rap, but a guy as EMINEM is a genius!
Really!! I love Marilyn Manson as well.
7. ABOUT THE MUNDIAL… I THINK THAT FRANCE PLAYED
BETTER THAN ITALY, BUT YOU LOST. HOW DID YOU FEEL? WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT
THE ATTACK OF ZIDANE AGAINST MATERACCI?
So ok!! Yes, France played better than Italy,
but Italy won, it’s like this, this is the rule you know. There must be
a winner and a loser. Now about Zizou, it’s not his attack against Materazzi,
but Materazzi’s attack against Zidane with his speech. He’s talking about
Zidane’s family, mother, sister etc .. Very cruel words against Zidane’s
family, and from this point of view, Italy didn’t deserve to win. You can
see the foot scandal in this country!! But it’s like this …
8. BACK TO THE MUSIC. YOU HAVE ALREADY RELEASED
3 ALBUMS. DON’T YOU THINK THAT IT’S ABOUT TIME TO DO A VIDEO – CLIP OR
PLAY LIVE?
I’m in contact with people from Los Angeles
to make a video, with a big American company, we are talking about it.
So I play live sometime, not so much now because I have a lot of work in
studio, not only for me, but for other musicians. But there is a photo
on my website, where I play live. It was in Marseille.
9. WHICH IN YOUR OPINION ARE THESE ELEMENTS THAT
MAKE YOUR MUSIC DIFFER FROM OTHER RELEASES OF NEOCLASSICAL METAL?
Well, it’s not an easy question you know...
Firstly, I’m happy about it, like that people can listen to my music and
think that I play guitar in my way. I don’t try to reproduce Malmsteen’s
music, or Macalpine’s music for example! It’s my music, my own guitar playing.
One element that makes my music differ from another one, in shred, is maybe
that I don’t try to play very fast in detail of the track, you have some
sweet moments and some slow music!!
10. HAVE YOU EVER DREAMT OF A TUNE AND THEN COMPOSED
A SONG BASED ON IT?
Not really, not yet! But the future stays
open for that!!
