Cloven Hoof
I don't think there are actually many people out there that aren't aware of Cloven Hoof and the legacy they left behind them... So, their time has come once again (I hope this time for good!) and I believe that they now deserve to reign and conquer the worldwide metal scene. Lee, the band's mainman, gave us some really introspective and thought povoking answers. But why don't you just see for yourselves?!?

1.HELLO LEE! ALMOST 16 YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE YOU?VE RECORDED YOUR LAST STUDIO ALBUM. HOW DID YOU FEEL THE FIRST TIME, AFTER SO MANY YEARS, WHEN YOU ENTERED TO STUDIO? DID IT TAKE YOU SOMETIME TO ADJUST OR WAS IT A NATURAL PROCESS TO YOU AFTER ALL?
Working in the studio is a lot easier these days, the technology has made getting the right sound simpler. In the past to a certain extent if you got a bad sound on your instrument you were stuck with it, now you can mix as you go along and processors can get any sound you want at anytime. Digitally everything can be changed individually and tightened up without the musicians doing endless takes. Having said that it can make piss poor players sound better than they are, and the music can sound mechanical and sterile. Analogue is much warmer and the human element of interplay can be heard and felt. This nu metal thing does nothing for me because it is just down tuned obvious block guitar patterns with some growly singer trying to be Cronus out of Venom. In the studio this is stuff is easy to create, but CLOVEN HOOF material is challenging because of all the complex time changes and epic song structures.
2.ARE THE SONGS THAT YOU'RE GOING TO INCLUDE ON YOUR NEW ALBUM, "EYE OF THE SUN", NEW COMPOSITIONS OR WERE SOME OF THEM MEANT TO BE INCLUDED IN A PAST RELEASE OF CLOVEN HOOF?
All the songs are brand new except the title track "Eye of the sun" that first got an airing on the fighting back album. Because it was recorded live before, we wanted to give "Eye of the sun" the full studio treatment. It is a trait of ours to take one track from the archive and re invent it, I think "Eye" sounds great and benefits from good production. Fans kept asking why we don't play that track live because it is such an epic piece, so it was a natural step to let everyone hear it again.
3.YOU STARTED AS A BAND IN 1979 AND NOW WE HAVE 2005. I WOULD LIKE YOU TO TELL ME WHICH OF THE DREAMS YOU HAD WHEN YOU STARTED YOU HAVE MANAGED TO ACHIEVE? IN GENERAL ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE COURSE OF CLOVEN HOOF THROUGH THE YEARS OR DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU COULD DO BETTER GIVEN THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITIES?
Wow was it really that long ago? 1979 seems like an age away. A hell of a lot has happened in that time, sometimes it is hard to imagine the person you once were. I think fundamentally I still have the same enthusiasm and ambition, I never forgot my roots or what the band stood for. The fans help me keep my focus because they tell me what they love about the music, and I feel it is my duty to protect the essence and integrity of the music for them. People seem to measure success in monetary terms while I don't. Doing something you are proud of that comes from the heart is what matters and in that I am satisfied. Cloven hoof set out originally to make heavy metal music on its own terms, and that is just what we did so it achieved what we set out to do. Unfortunately too many crooks came out of the woodwork and saw the bands potential. We were naive and got taken in by them, and getting out of dodgy contracts has been the bane of our career. It certainly stopped us getting famous on a worldwide level. We are now free of those ties I'm glad to say, and ready to take the band to greater heights. It is up to the metal fans in the end, you run the flag up the pole and see who salutes it. Given the right opportunities I'm sure the band could take the world by storm, but the same could be said of many bands.
4.WHAT GAVE YOU THE MOTIVE TO REUNITE AND START ALL OVER AGAIN AFTER SO MANY YEARS OF NOT BEING ACTIVE? DID YOU PARTICIPATE IN OTHER BANDS WHILE CLOVEN HOOF WAS DORMANT?
Our motive to re unite was pure and simple, we felt that we had unfinished business, because we have a hell of a lot of good material to offer. The fans never deserted us and there encouraging letters and e-mails was what kept our enthusiasm going whilst we rode out the legal nightmare of bad contracts. As soon as we got the all clear from our lawyers it was all systems go. Whilst we were in a kind of suspended animation Russ and I helped out a band out once by playing session work on some gigs, but we can't say who because of legal implications. But all we ever cared about was getting CLOVEN HOOF back together.
5. THE BANDS OF THE PAST THAT RE-UNITE USUALLY CHOOSE TO PLAY MODERN METAL. HOWEVER YOU'VE CHOSEN TO PLAY CLASSIC HEAVY METAL. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THIS GENERALLY HAPPENS?
Most bands reunite to make money  pure and simple. You can spot the jump on a bandwagon crowd a mile off, they change there style to suit any anyone in vogue at the time in order to court the press. They use bullshit terms like "We don't want to sound dated" etc. The truth is they really don't care what they play and they don't give a shit for the fans either. As long as the press give them a nice review and they make some cash then they will be happy. Well guess what? As I have said before Cloven Hoof have never cared one iota about the press or reviews. All we care about is the fans and giving them what they expect of us. Changing our style is not an option... Not ever!!! We helped create power metal, we forged a style of epic metal playing against all adversity, and we will continue to stick to our guns come what may. At least we will leave a legacy behind of songs we are proud of and believe in, how many bands can look you in the eye and say that?
6.ESPECIALLY IN THE U.K. THE CLASSIC HEAVY METAL SOUND IS NOT VERY MUCH APPRECIATED FROM THE PRESS. AREN'T YOU "AFRAID" THAT YOU MIGHT RECEIVE BAD REVIEWS FROM THE PRESS?
Not one bit, if they don't like us... Fuck em! We play for ourselves first, the fans second and the critics not at all!
7.BEFORE THE RELEASE OF "EYE OF THE SUN"², YOU HAVE SENT TO THE PRESS AROUND THE WORLD A CD WITH 3 TRACKS FROM YOUR NEW ALBUM. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE SPECIFIC SONGS? WILL THEY SOUND THE SAME ON THE ALBUM OR WILL YOU CHANGE THEM?
The 3 track taster featured "Inquisitor", "Absolute power" and "King for a day". These songs were simply the shorter tracks from the album, it just gives the fans and metal world a glimpse of what is to come. They were unmastered of course, on the final mix they will sound even heavier if that is possible. The initial reaction to the songs has been very favourable indeed.
8.LET'S SUPPOSE THAT THE CD YOU SEND RECEIVES BAD REVIEWS FROM THE BIGGEST PART OF THE PRESS. WILL A SITUATION LIKE THAT MAKE YOU QUIT?
Not at all, we are doing this for the fans that have supported us through all these years. Over 52 thousand hits on the web site have said they wantmore Hoof metal, and If I thought for one minute the new songs are not up tostandard then that is when I would call it a day. Bad reviews would never be the reason CLOVEN HOOF would call it a day, as long as we are proud of our product then the press can kiss our ass. Sales is the only major obstacle, if the fans don't buy the albums for what ever reason then record companies will not be into signing the band or releasing its albums. The pirates have been a double edged sword. They have helped keep the band's name alive by making the music available, but now if the fans don't buy the legitimate releases then that could kill the band. I suppose the message is buy "Eye of the sun" and CLOVEN HOOF will be bringing you true power metal for many years to come (Hey that rhymes!)!!!
9.OK, LET'S COME TO THE ALBUM NOW AND IN THE MUSICAL PART OF IT. I WOULD LIKE YOU TO TELL US WHAT A LISTENER SHOULD EXPECT TO LISTEN TO FROM THE CONTEMPORARY CLOVEN HOOF. HAVE YOU ADDED ANY NEW ELEMENTS IN COMPARISON WITH YOUR PREVIOUS RELEASES?
Because the expectations of the fans is so high, nothing less than the best ever CLOVEN HOOF album is required. The sound, production and content had to be perfect, and it is true to say the band has been trying to get TOM GALLEY to take the production helm since 1984! Tom has always worked with musicians of the highest calibre such as Brian May, Cozy Powell, Neil Murray, John Thomas, Glenn Hughes, Ted McKenna, Mel Galley, Don Airey, Peter Green, John Wetton, Ray Gillan, Scott Gorham, the list goes on. We have been meticulous in playing everything as tight as we possibly can to get the maximum attack and power.  Tom Galley has really driven us on in the making of our best ever album, because he understands that Cloven Hoof are about epic song concepts. He has helped refine and layer our sound to make everything slick and hard hitting. Now you get class melody with thrash like power and multi-tempo changes, something no other producer has understood.
10. LET'S TALK A BIT ABOUT THE LYRICS. WHO IS THE MAIN RESPONSIBLE? WHAT GIVES YOU INSPIRATION TO WRITE? CAN YOU TELL US IN A FEW LINES WHICH THE MAIN THEME OF EACH SONG THAT YOU HAVE INCLUDED TO YOUR NEW ALBUM IS?
Well I still write all the lyrics and 95% of the music so I will try to answer as briefly as I can. Ever since I was a kid, Greek mythology, Norse sagas and a staple diet of horror films and marvel comic books have fuled my imagination. Roll them all up into one and you have CLOVEN HOOF subject matter. Music is a natural gift and I find it easy to compose at the drop of a hat, but the most important thing to remember is... write as a fan. I never forgot my roots or strayed from my love of metal. That is why Cloven Hoof has its own identity. Right on to the new album "Eye of the sun" in a nutshell.

INQUISITOR: The album kicks off in truly epic aggressive style with INQUISITOR a story about medieval torture and religious fanaticism set in Spain, during Thomas De Torquamadas reign of terror. An Atmospheric intro sets the mood of the piece before a no holds barred heavy metal onslaught. It is a story of inhuman cruelty from the inquisitors perspective. No remorse... Much has been written of the inhuman cruelty of Thomas de Torquemada. Llorente computes that during Torquemada's office 8,800 suffered death by fire and 9,654 were punished in other ways. Even the Jewish historian Graetz contents himself with stating that "under the first Inquisitor Torquemada, in the course of fourteen years (1485-1498) at least 2000 Jews were burnt as impenitent sinners.". Torquemada's ways of ferreting out and punishing heretics seemed justifiable by his order and seemed not barbaric with the penal standard of the fifteenth century. The preservation of Christian Spain was all that mattered and Torquemada was called "the hammer of heretics, the light of Spain, the saviour of his country. He died peacefully in his sleep. Religion has always been an excuse for genocide. One man's murderer is a martyr, when at the end of the day murder is just murder. The end doesn't justify the means. In the present day dangerous climate of Sept 11th, Nothing changes... Evil still has its face.

WHORE OF BABYLON: I had that intro riff in my head for the longest time. It sounds vaguely eastern modally, but took me a while to get around to picking the correct subject matter to incorporate it. Lillith a Sumerian demoness is the subject of the song, legend has it that she was the first woman, created by god at the same time as Adam, unlike Eve who was created from Adam's rib. Lilith refused to submit to Adam's will and left the garden of Eden and was subsequently cursed by god. The "first Eve" story of Lilith first appeared in medieval times, although Lilith herself existed before the middle ages, all earlier descriptions of her were demonic. Lilith's true origins are obscure, but both her Sumerian and Babylonian predecessors were also all evil. Originally she was purely the mother of all demons who feasted on newly born infants at night and copulated with unwary mortals who she possessed the souls of after seducing them.

ABSOLUTE POWER: Absolute power is an observation on the inequality that exists in the world today between the have's and have nots. Man's greed is all consuming and power and wealth corrupts absolutely as the chorus indeed states. This urban segregation has created a gulf that is getting larger every day, and history has shown time and again what dangers can result from a wealth at all cost mentality... Poverty, famine and death. In a climate such as this extremists can often find support by manipulating the frustrations and emotions of the masses breeding revolution and anarchy. Politicians often forget the population at large only obey the law by consent of will, because it is supposed to represent the values held by the greater majority. When the fabric of this is eroded by power mad individuals who treat the views of the common man with contempt, that is when the fuse will be lit and all hell could break loose... That day may be very near at hand?

ANGELS IN HELL: Multi time changes, blistering riffs, this epic track has all the CLOVEN HOOF trade marks. It deals with the last great battle between the forces of good and evil. The book of Revelations is put to music starting with the brooding prophesy that sets the scene before the carnage commences and the great beast rises out of the sea. The devil holds reign over the Earth working great signs and wonders till the final confrontation, when the forces of light emerge triumphant over Lucifer and his minions. In many ways it is a return to grass roots for the band, with demonic subject matter being tackled with power and passion.

KISS OF EVIL: Gothic horror has always been a source of interest for the band, and Kiss of evil is a story about Vampires set in the modern age. The film Lost boys was a movie favourite of the band, and it was a big influence to this numbers content. This song is written to the memory of a very special lady nicknamed Buffy, whose real name must remain a mystery. She died at the age of 26 and she was captivated by Vampires and all things gothic. This one is for you!

CYBERWORLD: Computers are dominating our daily lives to a frightening extent. Technology is progressing to the point that science fiction becomes science fact on an almost daily basis. Therefore it isn't too difficult to imagine a super artificial intelligence growing to take over and ensnare it's hapless flesh and blood creators. The staple diet of ever evolving computer games provides the back ground metaphor for machine triumphing over man sometime in the not too distant future.

EYE OF THE SUN: Eye of the sun is a track about Aztec ritualistic human sacrifice! In Mesoamerica, the most obvious practice of human sacrifice was found in the Aztec Culture. Under the leadership of Montezuma and others before him, sacrifice became a key element in their ritual and worship to many gods. The Aztecs were constantly at "war" with neighbouring tribes and groups. The goal of this constant warfare was to collect live prisoners for sacrifice. The Flowery Wars began with a mutual agreement between the Aztecs and the Tlaxcalans to capture live men for future sacrifice. The Aztecs worshipped a war god called Huitzilopochtli, who took on the likeness of the sun over time. It was thought that in order to insure the sun's arrival each day, a steady supply of human hearts had to be offered in holy sacrifice (Hogg:43). They believed that the sun and earth had already been destroyed four times, and in their time of the 5th sun, final destruction would soon be upon them. In order to delay this dreadful fate, the practice of human sacrifice became a major element in Aztec society and livelihood. The most common form of sacrifice was performed outside, on the top of a great pyramid. The victim was spread-eagled on a round stone, with his back arched. His limbs were held, while a priest used an obsidian knife to cut under the rib cage and remove his heart. This method was used when honouring the sun god, Huitzilopochtli.

KING FOR A DAY: King for a day is a song about self-reliance. It tells of a drifter who will not be told what to do by anyone or anything. He makes his own mind up and never settles in one place long enough to be dictated to. Too many people follow like sheep, and are manipulated by the media or politicians etc. In this story our hero calls no one king.

GOLGOTHA: Golgotha is a song that I approached with the notion of so what if Jesus Christ really was the son of God or not? Crucifixion was a barbaric way of execution for a man not guilty of any serious crime. Military imposed government and religious politics conspired against him to make him the ultimate holy martyr. I focused on the last moments of his life when he uttered the words "Lord why hast thou forsaken me?". This sentiment of doubt about his purpose, and did he see himself as just a mortal man and not the messiah, is very evocative. I merely set this to music along with a snapshot of Christ's exploits.

EYE OF THE ZOMBIE: Voodoo swamp witches and zombie flesh eaters abound in this tale about a Louisiana backwater village where no one will go out after dark.

11. THE COVER ARTWORK IS AMAZING! WHO IS THE ARTIST THAT DID IT? DID HE LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC IN ORDER TO CREATE THE FRONT COVER?
Thanks for your kind words, glad you like it. We think it is great too and captures the epic, dark brooding, power and majesty of the music. I don't know much about the artist except he comes from Canada, but he did a great job. I suppose Tom sent him an advance demo and he came up with the visuals based on what he heard.
12. CLOVEN HOOF IS A WELL RESPECTED AND STRONG HEAVY METAL NAME. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SIGN WITH XZEC - RECORDS AND NOT WITH A BIGGER METAL LABEL?
Major labels tend to stifle and dictate to bands by and large. Big business and multi national corporations think they know it all. Commercialism and making money is the only concern, and committees in suits get together and tell you how you should sound and play. In return for this they will offer you pots of money, and your band will sound unoriginal, formatted and disposable. No contest!.. we needed a label that would do things our way and give us total control to make music our way, that is why we are with XZEC. Tom Galley gives us the production we need without selling our souls to the major labels. If the album does well then the big companies will have to be onboard on our terms.
13. WHEN YOU STARTED YOUR CAREER AS A BAND, BIG NAMES OF THE HARD ROCK AND HEAVY METAL SCENE, LIKE ROBERT PLANT AND ROB HALFORD HELPED YOU. DO YOU STILL KEEP IN TOUCH WITH THESE MUSICIANS? WOULD YOU LIKE TO INVITE ANYONE OF THEM AS A GUEST ON A FUTURE CLOVEN HOOF ALBUM?
These days I don't have much time for anything else except CLOVEN HOOF. Writing, rehearsing answer fan mail, doing interviews are all time consuming. Enjoyable as it is you have to be very single minded and focused. Unless I bump into Rob at a radio station or backstage at some gig it is unlikely that we would come into contact now. Same goes for Planty, except we both support the same football team (Wolverhampton Wanderers FC) and we may meet there at some point. As for guesting on one of our albums, well it would be an honour to have either of them perform our material of course, but I would rather have just the band. In some ways it would be trading on other artists name, CLOVEN HOOF prefers to make it on it's own merit.
14. FOR MANY PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD, CLOVEN HOOF IS CONSIDERED AS ONE OF THE FIRST BANDS THAT PLAYED POWER METAL. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT? WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE NEW POWER METAL BANDS? ARE THERE ANY THAT YOU LIKE AND HAVE DISTINGUISHED?
Yes we were one of the pioneers of power metal and it is nice to be recognised as such. When we started out no one was playing muliti time change epic metal songs. We were very ahead of our time and much of the press just couldn't get it. Our songs were too long for straight ahead rock, and too heavy for the progressive tag. We were totally different to anybody, and we had a whole concept that incorporated outlandish costumes and interwoven mythology. We can see our influence all over the place today, we did the masks and sci-fi, horror thing back in 1979. It all proves we were right, because metal now has evolved very much into what we envisaged back then. People told us you have three minute catchy rock tunes if you want to be a big band, especially if you have an outrageous image. Now look at Slipknot and Cradle of filth etc. They were talking rubbish, metal lends itself perfectly to a theatrical image because the audience is generally intelligent with great imagination. Bands that put on a show should be commended, they give good value for money.
15.YOU ALSO WERE AMONGST THE FIRST THAT USED MASKS ON STAGE AND GAVE A THEATRICAL TOUCH TO THE METAL MUSIC. DO YOU PLAN TO DO THAT IN YOUR FUTURE LIVE SHOWS?
Excellent I had already touched on this with my last answer. The truth is CLOVEN HOOF may one day bring back its concept of the elementals, all we need is the time to be right. To do it justice we need a major production, if the album sells well then the heavy metal men of steel will one day return!
16.LEE I WISH YOU HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND MAY THE NEW YEAR BRING SUCCESS TO YOUR BAND AND PERSONAL LIFE! THE LAST LINES OF THIS INTERVIEW BELONG TO YOU? ALSO LEAVE A MESSAGE TO THE READERS OF BEHIND THE VEIL WEBZINE.
The feelings mutual my friend, thank you very much for your time and thanks to all the amazing fanatical support the fans have given us over the years, we are proud and humbled. Hope you all enjoy "EYE OF THE SUN",  it is without doubt our best produced album to date. Behind the veil kicks ass, our very best wishes to everyone who reads it. See you all on tour next year? KEEP IT TRUE YOU METAL MANIACS!
    Kind regards
    Lee (CLOVEN HOOF)
