Notices Regarding Music For Trade
RE:  Kalamazoo, MI  August 7, 1978 (posted May 19, 2002)

The circulating version of this show appears to be none other than the
November 25, 1978 St. Louis, MO show for the following reasons:  (1) The version of "Ties That Bind" is too smooth by comparison to the November 1, 1978 show (which has a very rough, early version of the song.  (2) The intro to "Racing In The Street" has the same "Where are you guys from?" "New York, it figures." as the November 25 show.  (3) The introductions to "Ties That Bind," "Rosalita," "Born To Run," and "Fire" are indentical to the November 25 show.  (4) Some zealous fan screaming for "Santa Claus" between several tracks on both shows.  Thanks Grethe for calling this to my attention.  Sorry if I have sent you this show, and for those of you with it please check for its validity.  Let's cleanse this show from the archives.

RE:
Cincinnati, OH   February 27, 1977 (posted May 30, 2002)

Brucebase has no details on this show, yet one often shows up on various tradelists.  The circulating version is often a remix of the Cleveland February 17, 1977 show with some of the tracks switched around a some bonus track added.  Careful in trading for this Cincinnati show.

RE:
Passaic, NJ  October 18, 1974 (posted May 30, 2002)

Unfortunately this show often turns out to be "
Spanish Harlem," which is the Shenectady, New York October 19, 1974.  However, note that the setlists are different between the two shows as reported on Brucebase.  However, thanks to Keith, I have acquired a copy of the Passaic show.  The New Jersey crowd is also a dead giveaway.

MP3 recordings - do I know? (posted July 28, 2002 - updated March 31, 2003)

Lately there has been lots of chat regarding the issue of a show being
MP3 sourced or not.  Many appear to be using software that is reported to be able to detect if a recording is MP3 sourced.  MP3 technology was not patented for use until 1989 and did not become a standard until 1992.  Claims are often made that shows from the "Born In The USA Tour" and previous are MP3 sourced.  I doubt if this is the norm, but rather an exception.  Some websites have provided the opportunity to download shows (and these are likely to be MP3 sourced), but these sites remain somewhat rare.  A more plausible explanation is that many of the old shows were recorded from radio which compressed sound so to enable transmission.  In addition, pretty sub-par microphones were used 20 years ago relative to today's standards.  As a result, I question the validity of software that claims a recording is MP3-sourced simply due to a compressed frequency range.  For older shows, I think there are many plausible explanations.  While I do not routinely subject my shows to such scrutiny, I do avoid trading for a recording known to be MP3 sourced.  However; I understand the wishes of most to avoid recordings with compressed frequency ranges (and hence believe them to be MP3 sourced).  Thus, I will check any show upon request using Exact Audio Copy to evaluate the frequency range and report back if there is a significant frequence drop out (especially around 16 khz).

Reporting of Dates:  12-7-78 versus 7-12-78 (posted January 19, 2003)

CAREFUL, remember that
Brucebase dates shows by Day-Month-Year while in the U.S. dates are typically reported as Month-Day-Year.  Several times now I have tried to get the December 7, 1978 Austin, TX show and have each time been sent the Dallas, TX  July 12, 1978 show.  Hence, when suspicious such a mistake might occur with a trader, it is best to spell out the month, date, and year (ex. December 7, 1978) rather than simply use numerical notation.

RE:
What is meant by IEM? (posted February 1, 2003)

IEM is simply defined as "In-Ear-Monitor," which is frequently used to assist individuals who are hearing impaired.  However, it is also the same method used by artists and engineers in place of monitor speakers, which have largely been replaced by IEMs to open up the stage and to facilitate free movement by the artist.

RE:
For Those Who Where There That Night (posted February 8, 2003)

There is considerable confusion as to this Birmingham, England Show.
Rich Breton's site lists it as 6-7-81 and Brucebase lists it as 6-8-81.  I have seen artwork with both dates, both showing the Doberman emblem.  However, the real identifier is the setlist.  The 6-7-81 show starts with "Prove It All Night" and the 6-8-81 show starts with "Ties That Bind."  The Doberman insignia artwork I have seen starts with "Ties That Bind" even though the date is different.
