Thalia
Once
upon a time, there lived a very loving couple named Ernesto
and Yolanda. After being gifted with four little Yolanda, Señora
Yolanda Miranda de Sodi gave life to our Maria Ariadna Thalia
Sodi Miranda in Hospital de Español on August 26, 1971. She's
the fifth and the last Señorita Sodi after Lala, Titi, Gaby
and Pachita. After five years, a tragedy came upon this happy
family when Señor Ernesto died. Thalia was most affected by
this and would not speak to anybody. She made up her own
little world and lived in silence. Her memories of this event
was later transcribed to her song, "En silencio". Señora
Yolanda was afraid that she would never talk again but
eventually, after a year, she did. She again lived a normal
life. She played baseball with boys and had scars in her legs
from playing. In kindergarten, she had her first kiss and
first chance to act in front of an audience. She took ballet
lessons, gymnastics, and painting. She went to the theatre on
weekends to watch Laura act on stage. At the age of nine, she
decided to go for her dreams. With the support of her family,
she went on to begin her career as a singer with a group named
"Din-Din". "Din-Din" joined a
contest, "Jugemos a cantar", and won second place.
However, they disbanded afterwards. With Laura in the theatre,
Thalia performed in some shows. One of which was
"Vaselina" where she was to be one of the chorus but
eventually played the lead, Sandra Dee. This was where she met
the members of "Timbiriche", a young singing
group.
At 15, Thalia was asked to be part of "Timbiriche"
since Sasha was already moving on to a solo career. She
accepted and made seven albums with them. She also had a break
in television when she was casted in Televisa's "Pobre
Señorita Limantour" as Dina. Later on, she acted
with Adela Noriega in "Quinceañera" as
Beatriz. After that, she portrayed Alma Suarez for her first
starring role (that's not shared with anybody else) in "Luz
y sombra" with Alberto Mayagoitia. She said a number
of times that she did not like that telenovela because of its
boring story. In 1989, she left Timbiriche to prepare for a
solo career. She went to Los Angeles to train with Florence
Riggs, mentor of Madonna. 1990 was marked when she took the
world by surprise when she released her first self-titled
album. So surprised was Mexico that they banned Saliva and
Pacto Entre Los Dos from being played on air. But with the
support of Senora Yolanda and Alfredo Diaz Ordaz, they went to
Spain which fell to the charms of Thalia.
Thalia became the conductress of "VIP Noche",
a television show in Madrid. Alfredo released her second
album, "Mundo de cristal" (her fist album
called "Thalia"), the following year. Alfredo
and Thalia became romantically involved with each other. Their
love story wasn't all in roses. It had it's thorns, one of
which was since Alfredo was 20 years older than Thalia some
people could not accept their love. She was offered by
Valentin Pimstein to make three telenovelas and she agreed.
The first of these was "Maria Mercedes", a
street vendor who fell in love with rich Jorge Luis and
inherited Santiago's money, to the ire of Luis' mother. It was
in this telenovela where Thalia had a chance to act with her
sister, Laura. "Maria Mercedes" was shown in 1992.
The next was "Marimar", a girl who lived by
the sea with her grandparents and fell in love with Sergio,
the son of an haciendero and whose life was made miserable by
Sergio's family when Sergio married her. In 1993, during the
shooting of "Marimar" in Cuernavaca, Thalia received
a sad news - Alfredo has died of Hepatitis. In the set of
"Marimar", she cried and cried because everything
reminded her of Alfredo.
Then she released her third album, "Love",
which had quite sad songs. Two of the songs there were written
by Thalia. Sangre and "Flor de juventud", both were
noticibly written for Alfredo. Other sad songs were "A la
orilla del mar and cien años" which spoke of lasting but
tragic love. But there were lighter songs like La Vida en
Rosa, a spanish/french interpretation of "La vie en
rose", "El bronceador", "Love", and
"Maria Mercedes", the theme of her telenovela.
In 1995, Thalia's musical career made a leap forward when she
moved from Fonovisa to EMI Mexico. She released a long awaited
album, "En extasis". Through this project,
she was able to work with the likes of Selena's brother A.B.
Quintanilla III, Kike Santander and Emilio Estefan Jr. She
wrote another sad song, Lagrimas, with the help of Aureo
Baquiero and translated a french song in "Me
erotizas". She was able to record Gracias A Dios, a song
written by Juan Gabriel which she sang in "Luz y
sombra" but in a different musical arrangement. She also
made her last Maria, "Maria la del barrio", a
scavenger who was adopted by a rich businessman and fell in
love with Luis Fernando, the arrogant son. Fernando Colunga,
who portrayed Luis Fernando, became romantically involved with
Thalia, a relationship which lasted for two years. There was a
point in "Maria la del barrio" when Thalia didn't
appear for one week because she fainted in the set and had to
stay in bed to rest.halia received a star in Calle Ocho,
similar to Hollywood's Walk of Fame. But her star was far
brighter that it's brillance reached as far as Asia where her
telenovelas were shown in 1996. And Thalia's star continued to
shine brighter in 1997. She was already the queen of the
hearts of many but fate decided that crowns fitted her
perfectly. She became Queen in many festivals in different
countries (Vina del Mar - Chile, Noches de Carnaval - Miami,
Fiesta Broadway - Los Angeles, Feria la Molina - Peru) and was
also declared Queen of Telenovelas by Mexican President
Zedillo and Reina de los Billateros in December. She was not
only queen in 1997, she also was a princess, Princess
Anastasia that is. She sang Anastasia's themes in Spanish and
Portuguese. She received other recognitions from award-giving
bodies. Lasting symbols of Thalia is in "Paseo de las
luminarias", where her hand and foot prints was
immortalized and "Museo de cera", where a wax figure
of Thalia is in display.
Thalia released two albums - "Nandito Ako"
and "Amor a la mexicana". With all the love
that was given to her, "Amor a la mexicana" was her
answer a special love the Mexican way. In this album, she had
the privelege to work anew with Emilio Estefan Jr. and Kike
Santander. After that, in 1999, Thalia acted in new telenovela
called "Rosalinda" with Fernando Carillo.
This great novela was sold in 130 countries of the world.
Soon, Thalia has met Tommy Motolla, the president of
"Sony music". After some month, they became wife and
husband. And the next Thalia's album was called "Arassando".
Now, it is no doubt that Thalia is a great star!
