After
the 1847 war between Mexico and the United States. California
became part of the Union. But twenty years later, battles were
still raging between the original settlers and the new
immigrants. Mexicans, Yahi Indians and the Americans quarreled
for possession of the land...
Ramona tells:
"This
is the story of my family, the Moreno Gonzagas, who, like many
other Mexicans, chose to remain in California and fight for
the land where they were born. When I was a child, my mother,
Doña Ramona Gonzaga, sent me to live in a convent. I never
understood her decision; I had no religious vocation
whatsoever. Nor did I understand why my mother never visited
me in the convent, nor allowed my brother to do so.
During this time, Catholic convents were being closed. This is
why I was able to return to what I most loved: my home, my
dear brother, my nanny, the fields, the horses, the rivers and
why deny it? My mother. Things had changed in California. The
town, Todos los Santos, as I had known it as a child, was
renamed Spurtown. A sinister man named Jack Green wore the
star that stood for authority in the county. My family, the
Yahi tribe, and I were victims of the atrocities commited by
this man, more a beast than a human being. Greed and lust for
blood were the evil forces that drove him.
On the way to the hacienda, and quite by chance, I crossed
paths with the Yahi Indian Alejandro de Asis. Although it was
only a brief encounter, it marked me for life. When he gazed
into my eyes, his look pierced my heart like an arrow. Upon
arriving at the hacienda, I was received warmly by everyone.
Only my mother seemed uncomfortable in that festive
atmosphere. Her coldness revealed how little she welcomed my
return. Shortly thereafter, I realized that she was hiding an
old secret that would forever change my life.
Life
held many surprises for me, and the most beautiful of all was
discovering that I was in love for the first time, with
Alejandro de Asis. That forbidden passion was so overwhelming
that I could not help but confess my secret to my brother
Felipe. Some time later, I learned that my arrival had
awakened unnatural feelings in him that tormented his soul.
But his kind heart mastered his jealousy and he became my ally
in my secret escapes with Alejandro, defying our mother's
authority. On the night Alejandro and I planned to elope, we
were discovered by my mother. She became so enraged that
Alejandro was forced to run away. My despair would have
destroyed me had it not been for the message he left me:
"I will return for you on a night when the moon is
full"... |
