Imagine arriving in a new town eager to start a new job only to find people sweeping dirt onto their back porch instead of off of it. This is what faces Leon Tolchinsky as he arrives for an idyllic teaching job in Russian Hamlet. The town has been cursed with stupidity for over 200 years and, as Leon quickly finds out, his real job is to break the curse. No one tells him that if he fails to break the curse within 24 hours, he too becomes stupid. Why doesn't he just leave? He's quickly fallen in love with a girl so stupid, she only recently learned to sit down. |
