The As of Yet Untitled Novel

written for the National Novel Writing Month challenge

Nov. 10, 2001-
Hello and welcome to a work in progress.

Back in October I heard about this NaNoWriMo thing off of the message board of improvchicago.com and decided that I should do it too. I got a two day late start on it but caught up and then have contined to dance with being on track with my word count. I don't know if I will make it, but I still have time.

That is one of the purposes of putting my attempt on this website. With the public at large to see my progress, I have added pressure to do it. I know myself and I know that I will try harder on something due to my wish to not disappoint others more so than my wish to not disappoint myself. I think that last sentance makes sense. Another reason is so that people have a natural curiousity to see how other people write things. So, showing this will give people an idea of how I write and maybe the glimpse of that will inspire other people to write because they will say "damn, my process is much better than his, I will write to show everyone that I'm better than Jon."

And someone else's attempt at this thing probably will be better than mine. After all, the goal is quantity and not quality. The quality will come later when I edit this monster of a thing.

Below are links to chucks of the novel grouped into chapter groupings. I hope you don't vomit too hard.

Well, November is over with and I didn't come close to 50k words. I got to 14,196 words. So I failed...or did I? I got an e-mail from the creator of this thing and he said that we didn't fail. We tried to take on a big task that was completely useless and for just attempting this, we are successes. I like that way of thinking. I feel better now.

Soon I will post the remaining chapters I did so you can see all my 14,196 words in all their crappy glory. Maybe when I have more time I will try to make it to 50,000. Maybe.

Later,
Jon

A little less than 4 months later, I've added 4 chapters to bring the word count to 20,440. I'm still getting the exposition out I think and I don't think the story will start rolling on its own until I get about another 8 to 10 chapters in.

I'm glad I'm still writing this thing and that it hasn't just sat and collected dust.

Word count: 35,228.
So I'm now past the half-way mark set by the NaNoWriMo people. It only took me a year and a month. I'm like a turtle, moving slow and steady. My friend Christy wrote a NaNoWriMo novel this past November and she was actually able to write a little more than 50,000 words in 30 days. So I tip my hat to her for her dedication, commitment, and truly inspiring accomplishment. I will put a link to her website on my site soon in the future.
Other than that, if you are actually reading my novel, then you must be truly bored. Well, for you bored people, I hope you enjoy the chapters I've added to this thing.

Later,
Jon
