| The Importance of Water |
| Please send a "sports" type water bottle to school with your child. Mark it, clearly, with their name. The bottle should not have a top that must be removed for your child to get a drink. It should be easily opened and closed. It is important that the children have their own water bottles for two reasons. One is simply that we are not near a water fountain that we can easily monitor from the classroom, so this allows the children to get a drink, when they need it, without leaving the classroom. The second reason is based on a brain-based teaching and learning article. It stated that our brains are about 80% water and are sensitive to bodily fluid levels. Since water is a natural conductor of electricity, hydration aids the "firing of neurons which causes learning to be more efficient." It also said that the body/brain "needs water about every 45 minutes of the waking day or it starts a dehydration process in the parietal lobe, the problem solving area of the brain." Another article, by Eric Jensen, states that students should have access to water because knowing you have the ability to get a drink of water when you feel thristy is almost as important as drinking it when it comes to stress reduction. |
