American DVD Catalog

28-May-07 11:08PM

I've updated my R1 Anime and American movie catalogs to include the physical location of discs due to my advanced sorting techniques (level 10).   Oh, Final Fantasy XII still totally owns me, my soul and my pee-pee.

09-Jul-06 9:58PM

Time for a semi-annual update! Nothing major, just a list of some of the anime/manga
/games I've been enjoying lately. Also, I actually recently updated by catalogs; as
usual I'm not looking to sell anything but if you have a rediculous offer or something
really cool for trade I'm willing to listen.

I just felt like sharing the stuff I've been enjoying lately with all you folks.

Anime:
My-Hime (E) - Great Sunrise Moe show.
Gilgamesh (E) - Super Recommend! Ishinomori creation forgotten in the 70's, redone by
Vistec and Group TAK. Excellent show, action, intrigue, sexy, forbidden. Great show.
Eureka 7 (E) - Only seen the first vol thus far, but looks real good. Great soundtrack,
incredible character designs.
Hare+Guu (E) - Too funny. Way too funny. Michiko Yokote (Patlabor, Genshiken, Tutu,
a billion other brilliant works) once again triumphs with her incredible writing ability
Gankutsuou (E) - Super cool rendition. Maeda really is a great director.

Manga:
Kamen no Maidguy - Story of a girl and here two super maids. (one of whom is a huge dude
with a mask named Kogarashi).
"Ten ni hoshi; chi ni hana; hito ni ai; soshite kisama ni Maidguy"
Monster (E) - only read the first 2 vols, but damn if it isn't a page turner. Anime is
supposed to be really good too.
Eden (E) - Post apocalyptic, violent, sexy adventures with guerillas (not the animal).
Artwork is beyond great. I recommend the English version unless your Japanese is really
damn good (especially the first vol or 2).
Vagabond (E) - I recommend the US release of this over the japanese. US (Viz) printing
is good quality, translation is excellent AND they have all the original color pages in
color (B&W in japanese). Brilliant manga. If you haven't read it yet, your life is
less worthwhile than mine.
Tenjou Tenge - English version not recommended due to censorship. Sexy, Violent, tragic,
gorgeous artwork, challenging read. I wasn't a real fan for the first couple of vols;
but once the story goes into Aya and Mitsuomi's past it gets really good. Art also
changes dramatically (for the better) after the first couple of vols. Isuzu Emi is my
favorite girl; Madoka is really cool too.
Venus Versus Virus - 2 girls fighting demons. Incredible artwork, good writing. Real
new series (vol 2 just came out).
NHK ni Youkoso! - brings out the hikikomori in you (ha ha ha). Awesome art, great writing,
incredible lettering. Anime starts broadcast soon.
Genshiken (E) - is over! Sad... ended in the July issue of Afternoon (issue 50). Oh well,
at least it was brilliant through to the end (I still haven't read the end yet). If you
haven't seen or read it yet you probably aren't getting reading this. And as a definite
recommend I suggest the "Genshiken Official Book" (KCDX 1955) - an excellent supplemental
book. I'm usually not a fan of those 'fan' or 'guide' books; but this one is great!
More details, interviews, additional material than you could hope for.

Games:
New SMB (E) - a worthy game. Plus, the multiplayer games are the best.
Street Fighter Alpha/Zero Collection (E) - I love the Alpha series.
PoPoLoCrois (E) - supercool PSP RPG. Definitely recommened to anyone with a PSP.
Mariocart DS (E) - Mariocart on DS. how cool.

There's always more, but that's enough for now.

Another update (finally), actually my internet has been out for a while so that's
at least a partial excuse.

So, here's my 'Best of 2005' list. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind
at any time, but this list will remain (I can always update it).

Best of 2005 - Everything listed is nominated. Voting is done by
secret ballot by the board members of the committee (me).

Thoughts
As you can see, the market continues its shift towards short
TV series and away from Movies and OVA's (in fact, the KujiUn
OVA is an extra on the Genshiken DVD's). I'd say the 15 years
ago, many of those short TV series would have been produced as
OVA series. Still, regardless of the method of production or
funding there were a lot of really great shows released this
year; hopefully next year continues to show such a strong
release schedule.

Thoughts
As can be seen, I don't buy many import DVD's (I still buy many
CD's and tons and tons of Manga). Plus, I still have a DVD or
two that I have yet to watch. Also, you'll notice that I really
don't pick up many JP TV series; a lot of that is for the same
reason that I pick up so many of those short TV series in the
US; they aren't OVA's. OVA is my favorite release way to
produce anime; I think it leads to the greatest combination
between creative and commercial freedom; this is provided to
both the creator and the consumer. However, with the ever
shifting market and the rampant spread of digitally copied
versions of shows, the vast majority require the initial TV
broadcast as a source of income and couldn't survive production
with just the OVA release. Uhh... damn; oh well.

Manga(I'm tired, so I'm cutting this one quickly):
I've listed the # of vols out in each region

Great stuff:
Genshiken (US 3/JP 6)
NHK ni Youkoso! (JP 3)

Okay, so it's been long enough for me to write an update.

Video Games:
Berserk (PS2, Japanese Import) - finally picked this game up. It is fucking sweet.
more of a Diablo style game; except fun to play. you've got all Guts' tools and
tricks and run around beating the crap out of monsters. There is a bunch of leveling
up and new techniques that you can get. Plus you have assist characters; ex Puck
heals you. Excellently done fighting system, has a chain combo system such that you
get more exp for killing more enemies sequentially. Looks like there's tons of extras
too. As for story (I've only played it for an hour) it looks like it's mostly a game
where you play through the Millennium Falcon story line (approx vol 20+). I'm not sure
how far it gets, but from the opening video and a few clips I've seen on the Internet
it looks like it gets through vol ~27/28; no idea how much further it goes.

I also picked up the Mini-Pato game for PSP that just came out. Of course, I have no
PSP with which to play this game...

Manga:
Okay, so I finally got off my ass and found my way to Kinokuniya in Seattle. Here's
my thoughts on some stuff:

Berserk 29 - still brilliant. this volume was more of a buildup volume without much
fighting. Still, plenty of shocking events and great stuff. I think Guts had no more
than 10 lines in the whole volume.

MAR 8 - I've got 1-8 and 10, 11. Doh. Oh well, still this is a great series. If you
want a fun shonen-battle series with great artwork and layouts I highly recommend this
series. I love Anzai-sensei's work; he's my favorite shonen artist, something about
his art, characters and stories just works. MAR continues to be a highly entertaining
series with enough twists to keep me reading.

Robot 1 - I just found this beautiful creation. It's a ~quarterly full size, full color,
high quality, manga magazine put together by Yoshitoshi ABe. Each issue is ~200 pages
with short stories from ~15 different authors (many very well known and established
creators). I also just found out that vol 1 has been released in the US by DMP for $25
(same as the Japanese price).

Sgt Frog 9 - Still brilliant comedy. I love Keroro, the second series is now airing in
Japan; hopefully it comes out in the US soon.

Genshiken 2 - Yes, I know vol 3 is out, but I'm waiting for my comic shop to send my copy.
The series is only out through vol 6 in Japan (and that could be the end; I'm really have
no idea). Anyway, I seriously recommend Genshiken (the manga and anime) to anyone who
is reading this page; you already meet the requirement to enjoy this show/book.

I've got a couple of other books I'm in the middle of reading, so I'll hold off on writing
about them until I've read a little more.

Anime:
Grrl Power - Japanese title is "Makasette Iruka" (it a play on words). Fun one episode OVA
by Daichi-sama. Highly recommended to anyone who likes anime. Also, I give the extras on
this disc a 10/10 (that is to say, 'Perfection'). The OVA itself is 25 minutes long and
there is at least 60 minutes of extras, not including the episode commentary. This includes
an excellent 40 minute interview with Daichi about the creation and production of the show.

My Dear Marie - Japanese title "boku no mari" (so, actually a decent title translation).
Wow... I feel so dumb for not having seen this before. I had been wanting to watch this
OVA for at least 6 months, but damn... It's really great. Directed by Mochizuki-sama,
this spectacular 3 episode OVA is about a college dork who creates an android in the
exact image of his dream girl. It's got cute girls, comedy, romance, yada yada yada and
is fucking great. I can't strongly enough recommend this series to anyone.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam - A New Translation - Hoshi o Tsugu Monotachi (Those Who Inherit
The Stars): this is the first theatrical Z Gundam movie, released over the summer and DVD
released just before the theatrical release of the second movie (Koibito - Lovers).
Damn, this is one of those cases where I just have to laugh and feel sad for all you cheap,
dumb bastards who don't import stuff. This movie is great. I literally screamed for joy
and threw my arms in the air when it ended; I don't think I've ever done that for a movie
before. Yes, it is Z Gundam (one of my top ~3 shows ever); but it was done so fucking well.
The 1st pressing bonus DVD is also probably one of the best Japanese interview extras I've
seen. It showed the creation process that Tomino-sama used to make the movie. This showed
me the best usage of computers in anime creation I have seen. Through the use of some basic
computer techniques of cut and paste between TV series animation and scans of Tomino's new
storyboards he was able to, literally, sit at a computer and create the whole movie just short
of key animations for the new sequences. Using that creative process Tomino was able to
achieve something closer to his exact desires than ever before possible.
God, I can't wait for movie 2 to come out.

Honneamise - watched this again, and it's still just as good as it was in 1987 when it
came out. Truly a piece of art just as worthy of being in a museum as any shit someone
drew in 1500.

Jubei Chan 2 vol 1 - great stuff. I wasn't so sure when I first heard about a new Jubeichan
series, but they pulled it off excellently, I've got a couple more vols to watch, I'd I'll
certainly enjoy all of it.

Mermaid's Forest 2 - another great Takahashi show. Not sure yet if I like this as much as
the RK Anthology, but it is really great stuff; I think I'll have to watch all of this
before making some kind of call.

Aside from that, I have a back log of about 90 discs to catch up on along with about 75 vols
of manga to catch up on. You're all welcome to come over and help me get caught up.
Stupid being at work 11+ hours a day getting in the way of my life.

Peace out Punks.

30-Oct-2005 9:42PM

Okay, so it's been a while. So, here's the news in brief:

Weezer + Foo Fighters Concert - HOLY FUCK ASS WORDS AND THOUGHTS. Yeah, it was
fucking sweet. Both those bands are awesome live; probably the best two live bands
I've ever seen. The only thing that (kinda) sucked was that I actually had a 'seat'
up in the nosebleed section rather than being on the floor.
If any of you cool kids who read this page have an opportunity to see either of them
I recommend you do so. Damn... that concert fucking rocked. Both bands played great
selections from all of their records (Weezer played four songs of Pinkerton!!!!)
Rivers Cuomo "I have the urge... The urge to rock."

Now for the rest of my life (aka Anime and Manga):

Anime:
Fafner (vol 1+2, eps 1-8) - pretty good. It's definitely an Eva knock off, but it has
enough of its own stuff to keep it interesting. There's also something slightly...hmm
not quite sure what it is, but probably just good writing and storyboards that makes it
'work'. I definitely recommend having enough time to sit down and watch a whole volume
at a time; I think it's that type of show that benefits from that type of viewing.

Melody of Oblivion (vols 1+2, eps 1-8) - Sweet. Definitely not for everyone though; I
recommend watching a volume to see if you like it. I am definitely digging it. It has
a very Utena feel to it, while being nothing like Utena.

Manga:
MAR - I love Nobuyuki Anzai's artwork. He does a great job at executing stories that are
'original copies' (that is, he follows the required SJ story line stuff while making it his
own story). He has great character and costume designs and superb layouts. I really
recommend MAR or Flame of Recca as great series to learn Japanese with; they're written
simply enough to understand a lot and bring up your confidence in your Japanese language
skills while not being just dumb crap. I can't say anything about the US release, I'm
reading the Japanese version.

Here is Greenwood - This is one of the best manga ever written. Everything about works
beautifully, and just works. It's one of those pieces that if you read a synopsis might
not sound very interesting or funny or inspiring or anything; while it is definitely all
of those things. If you haven't read the manga (or seen the great OVA series) I highly
highly highly recommend you do both.

Also I've been playing a bit of Capcom vs SNK 2 lately, and I seriously suck cock at it.
I remember being able to beat the computer pretty solidly, but now I'm just being beat
like a teenager caught playing in the mud in her bedroom (I want to form that image
in you head). But, I'm starting to remember and get some 'l33t 5ki11z' again (until I
play Nik and he just make me feel like I'm back in that bedroom getting caught again).

US Movies:
Three Kings - watched this movie again (for the first time in quite a while), still a
great film. Possibly even more poignant in this Age of Occupation where all of the
problems we're now facing were discussed in this film

I (Heart) Hucabees - Watched it again (I was in a David O. Russel - same director as
Three Kings - mood). I like this movie more and more each time I watch it; there are
so many great layers in this film, so many varied schools of thought and philosophy to
get out of it. This is the best movie of 2004.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - finally saw this great film. Michael Gondry is
a true cinematic genius, you too will realize this when you watch the making of for the
film and realize they really didn't use any 'special' effects; no blue screens at all,
just lots of tricks of lens, lights and space to change the space and effect. A great
movie, one of the other greats of 2004 (along with the above movie, The Aviator, Sideways,
Super Size Me, Kill Bill, and probably a couple of others).

19-Oct-2005 10:23PM

Weezer + Foo Fighters + Seattle = The Next concert I'm going to. I don't have so
attempt to convey in words to you how fucking awesome this is.

Batman Begins - finally saw this tonight; great movie, by far the best Batman since
(at least) Tim Burton's 'Batman'; I'll have to watch that movie again and see to see.

Fruits Basket Manga through Vol 11 - Wow... that manga is too good for words; it's
really a brilliant work that continues to build upon itself and develop for the better,
to anyone out there who has not read the manga (and reads this page) I give this my
highest recommendation. Oh, and you also need to read Kare Kano (and so do I; I'm way
behind the Japanese releases)

Mmm... Alaska Oatmeal Stout flows freely from the tap at my house... glorious...

17-Oct-2005 11:01PM

SIRIUS Satellite Radio - finally got it installed in my car, now I too can join the
revolution with Howard Stern as we firmly destroy terrestrial radio. I recommend you
all come along for the ride, it's gonna be awesome. And, yes, there are actually a
bunch of great stations that aren't even Stern on there.

I (Heart) Huckabees - awesome movie (possibly better the second time around). Super
Recommend to anyone who likes intriguing movies (Wes Anderson stuff, etc). Probably
the best movie of whenever the hell it was released.

Elfen Lied vol 3 - okay; I finally get it. This show is actually really damn good.
The secret of this show is that it's actually a 'harem' anime; it's just kind of the
'anti-harem'. I also really like the development of Kouta and Yuka into parental
characters; it really works well, they have their own adult relationship, but to the
rest of the group they really are the parents. The Opening is also one of the best I've
seen in a while (not quite 2nd Gig cool, but really close). So, I fully recommend this
show to anyone who's not afraid of blood, boobs, crazy shit and a sweet show.

Samurai Champloo vol 5 - this actually ends the first season with the first ep on the
disk and then continues into the second season (which is not a noticable transistion).
And I also have an addendum on my opinion of this show: HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS SHOW
IS GREAT!!! Yes, it is. Here is my guess at the top five influence for this show:
1. Mugen no Junin (Blade of the Immortal)
2. Mugen no Junin (Blade of the Immortal)
3. Mugen no Junin (Blade of the Immortal)
4. Drugs
5. Mugen no Ryvius (Infinite Ryvius) Music
The 'serious' episodes really are just some slightly redone portions of a few of the
stories in Blade. Before seeing this I didn't think it would be possible to animate
Blade, but after watching this I am a believer; it can be done, and it could be the
best anime in the last 20 years (but I doubt that'll happen). Anyway, this show is
incredible and gets my award for "Best Improvement with each episode". I have always
enjoyed the show, but each disc has managed to improve on the previous by leaps and
bounds. So, go, purchase and enjoy this show.
Oh, and the soundtrack is fucking great and somehow is absolutely perfect.

Hitsuji no Uta (Lament of the Lamb) Manga - finally finished it. Wow... really great
series. The ending did not dissappoint in anyway, nor do I have anything but positive
things to say about that entire series. Truly an innovative work that will stand out
for many years and (hopefully) inspire others to just go out there and create something
that is totally fucking out there. Another Super Reccomend on this series.

Man, it seems like all I can do is like stuff and that I've lost all my hated and despair
for all things produced. However, I have enough work/etc to do such that I don't have
time to waste on things which I don't think are great, so I certainly won't give them
any thought or wasted time in writing about them. Which is why you notice I never talk
about my job, or life, or the stories I could tell from boat life and all this shit I've
seen and learned in the past (almost) 3 years with my employer. I'd rather spend my brains
worrying how the hell Takenochi is gonna get back to Japan (from America) if he's so weak at
traveling (and how the hell did he get there in the first place?).
And, now that I mention it Cromartie High School is fucking great.

16-Oct-2005 12:48AM

Mostly watched non-anime stuff today (and recovered from my excessive drinking on Friday
night). Picked up the box set collection of Spike Jones, Chris Cunningham and Michael
Gondry; those guys are all really fucking good. I think Chris Cunningham makes the
creepiest videos I've ever seen.
Also got the Weezer Video collection (or whatever it's called). Pretty decent stuff, tons
of obscure live concerts and random shit; plus all their videos with band commentary.
I hadn't seen a video of thiers since 'Say it Ain't So', but they're... odd. A couple of
cool videos and a lot of bad videos; but at least the band realized they suck and pretty
much say that during in the commentary.
Finally picked up vol 4 of Futurama. Great fucking show. It totally licks balls that they
only made 4 seasons; still better than none and better than continuing on and getting shitty.
And picked up/watched 'Saving Silverman', sweet movie. It should be more popular than it is,
it's got some great shit in it. "and you're the hard-core bitch I've always dreamed of"

Told you I didn't watch much anime.

But, I did watch Animation Runner Kuromi-chan; CPM did a great job on this disk, full-length
commentary by Daichi, storyboards, separate interview with Daichi and a segment on animation
creation process by an American animator. That and Kuromi-chan is a great OVA.

That's all for tonight, time to finish reading GTO and Lament of the Lamb (damn, I'm really
far behind in my manga collection).

13-Oct-2005 10:25PM

updates to anime favorites lists. Mostly reorganized the list and added/removed a few
shows; I decided to keep my old list just as a comparison point. And, I really wouldn't
put too much stock in the stuff that was removed from the list, it probably means I just
haven't watched/read it in a while.

Genesis of Aquarion soundtrack is really good, it goes through many different musical styles,
kind of reminicent of the Turn A Gundam OSTs. I'll definitely pick up OST 2 sometime
soon.

Madlax - vol 3 - eps 9-12 - Quick Review
Still a great show, more development of story and some interaction between the two main
characters. I think this show is a 'better' show than Noir; still not sure if I like it
more but it has some great stuff in it.
"koko ni nero, atashi to issho ni" Heh... nice place to go to commercial.

FLCL Music DVD Quick Review
contains MV's done to 5 great Pillows songs. The videos are decent, nothing really
special though, it was mostly put out to promote OST 3 and the boxset. Something I found
interesting was that in the promo for OST 3 it says that the disc was made due to the
show being a big hit in the US. I can't say I've ever been anything but overjoyed at the
popularity FLCL has had in the US.

Akino Arai is really great, her voice is incredible and her songs are always really fun
and musically interesting. I just picked up several of her albums; I really don't know
why I hadn't before, probably just me being dumb; and they're all really damn good.
Maybe I'll put together a list of my favorite anime vocal songs sometime...

11-Oct-2005 10:20PM

Watched Advent Children (legally, unlike all those fucks that just steal shit online).
Not that I like to get involved in this discussion, but I called my friend to tell him
I saw it and that it was sweet, and he says "Oh, yeah my brother has that already, and
it looks pretty good on my TV. It's subtitled." God... I find that so infuriating.
I work my ass off for an untold amount of time (from Jun to October I had 0 days off and
was on patrol for >80 days straight), and spend that money on shit that I love because
that's how the fucking capitalistic system works: the power of the wallet. People
produce something you like, you spend your money on it to show your appreciation and
support their continued production.
So, when Joe-cheap-ass-fucko steals it he's taking money away from quality products in
the future and degrading the quality that is put out. The funniest part is when I hear
people say they're 'hard core' or 'otaku' or whatever the fuck those ass-fisting-shit-
lickers call themselves and complain about the quality of productions; guess what dip
shit, you're the fucking cause of the low quality because your theft takes away from
capital for future investments.
I'm just glad that they only sites I frequent on the net are commercial sites that don't
glamorize the society of thieves that we live in (#1 reason why I love AnimeonDVD.com).
It also makes me glad that I'm such an isolated otaku, and that they only people I know
who watch stuff watch stuff on either Cartoon Network or Netflix or occasionally buy
something.
Okay, venting done for now. Back to my original topic.

Advent Children - fuck yes. Awesome. Can I think on things that I may have done
differently had I been part of production, sure, but nothing that significantly takes
away from it. Here's my breakdown:
Voice Acting - 9/10 - Incredible casting. Probably the best I can imaging. I had
initially been concerned with Maaya Sakamoto as Aerith, but she pulled it off excellently.
Everyone else was great.
Animation 9/10 - holy shit.
Music 5/10 - why so low? hmm... I love the original FFVII OST and I love Nobuo Uematsu's
piano and orchestra work. However, he keeps trying to write 'rock' versions of songs and
rock songs and he sucks at it. Some people were born to rock, he was not. The rock-esque
stuff just sounds out of place and doesn't work; I think if someone else wrote that stuff
it could have worked well, but it just didn't as it was.
Action Sequences 8/10 - overall great work, but a lot of the time it seems to go to fast
to keep up with and watch all the movements. If I had a companion manga or storyboard to
read before watching the action sequences I think the would make a lot more sense.
Still, they were fucking sweet.
Children 3/10 - hmm... everything looked great except the kids movement for some reason,
i dunno, maybe their just harder to do than the rest. And I found the kids characters
annoying mostly; but, then again I'm not known for my great love of children.
Overall 8/10 - Great stuff, definitely worth owning a copy or two. I'd say it must
actually be really good considering my self-hype for it and the fact that I was totally
engaged the entire time and pissed when I had to pause it to go to the bathroom.

Other random reviews (of stuff I watched today):
Fullmetal Alchemist vol 3 (eps 9-12) : 5/10 : okay, I'll say it, I don't get this show.
I know friend who will call me a blasphemer, but I think this show sucks. It's moderately
entertaining, but feels like a fucking after school special; every episode ends with the
brothers helping someone or a town and everyone learns their lesson and someone calls Elric
'chibi' and he gets mad; ha, ha, ha that's so funny (sarcasm). I will continue to get the
Netflix so I can't be accused of not giving a show enough of a chance to 'get good'. My
favorite part of the show is the end theme song, really cool song, the end animation is lame,
but the song is good.

Elfen Lied vol 2 (eps 5-7) : 7/10 : I'm never sure whether this show is really good or
just imitating a good show. Some stuff in the show is 9/10 quality, but overall it feels
like a production that's dead inside... maybe that's the intent... if that's the case then
my rating goes up. I do have to say that the scene where the two people (censored for those
who haven't watched it yet) kiss in the rain gets 10 wangs at high noon for being sexy and
done perfectly.

That's it for now kids, enjoy your fresh ham sandwiches!

quick note that I have updated my R1 Anime, R2 Anime and Comic/Manga catalogs.
And, yes, I know that the 'eps' section is screwed up.

Well, an update and it only took me over a year.

I could talk about the stupid shit that has been my life; but really who cares about that crap.
I certainly don't; so I'll talk about important stuff.

SAC 2nd Gig - awesome; dammit it's sweet.
Scrapped Princess - best BONES stuff in quite a long time, way better than that shitty FMA show.
Shura no Toki - must watch.
Ah! My Goddess TV - great job!
Genshiken - oh, what a great show. No surprise that Michiko Yokote is the script supervisor.

and SAC 2nd Gig is fucking awesome.

I know, not very long, but hey it's more than zero!
