Beloved

The novel Beloved is intricate story, revolving around a mysterious character named Beloved. Though not much is said about Beloved and her past, her character definitely plays a crucial part in emphasizing the novels main point: the importance of identity.
The characters of Beloved are all unstable characters. They all cant establish their true identities because of the pains of slavery. Sethe hides away from her past, thus losing any base to build her identity. Paul D and Baby Suggs limit their emotions, restricting themselves from loving anything too dearly. This in turn limits their emotional growth and their own selves. Even Denver, who hasnt ever been a slave herself, is affected by slavery. She is limited only to the domains of 124, and thus prevents her from maturing.
However, this all changes with the appearance of Beloved. The character Beloved, along with the anti-chronological structure of the book, promotes the theme of the book. Her character acts as a catharsis, making the other characters mature. She makes the characters face the past and get over the realities that have passed by and move on. By doing so, the characters mature and find their own identities. The development of Beloveds character helps the others find their own selves and identities, and also emphasizes the main point of the story.
