Hello SLD Forum people!
Here are another two sensory poems and switch based PowerPoint presentations to ensure happy literacy hour lessons with your students! The lessons are simple, first you get the resources listed in the poem and then you put your students into their various funky physio positions. After setting the scene, start reading the poem in your best Shakespearian voice (optional). Read each line of the poem while you or a teaching assistant go around each pupils giving the sensory stimulation (shown in brackets and italics). Repeat the lines for each child to enhance their level of anticipation.
As a fun challenge at the end of the poem, I always like to attempt the whole story in under a minute leading to a mad dash which the pupils love! Good luck!
The presentations are just as easy, whack 'em on PowerPoint then read the poems to your students and allow them to 'tell' the story using a switch, easy!
WARNING! The presentations were written using PowerPoint XP (which I am far too excited about by the way) so not all the funky features will work in earlier versions as Mr Gates is not a fan of backward compatibility. They still work well though…
The Poems
The first poem is the fearsome tale of Rowena Lector--School Inspector. I wrote this when being observed by our wonderful English coordinator Rowena Gilchrist. She's a great sport and really got into the spirit of the lesson so a big thank you to her. She also kindly allowed me to post her beautiful mug on the internet so more big thanks and more big kisses are due her way! The poem is really fun and I can't wait to do it when we are next visited by evil OFSTED, I hope they have a sense of humour!
The second poem is one I did for Easter but can be adapted to use at any time of the year. It is the terrible tale entitled Curse of the Warebunny about a poor sap who turns into a bunny every time the moon is full!
Please feel free to use the poems in any way you see fit and pass them on to your friends (or enemies). Please contact me at [email protected] to tell me how they went.
You can download the poems (which are zipped but still rather large) by clicking the pictures below. Over the year I've written about 30 more so feel free to drop me a line if you would like any.
