| AS GOOD AS IT GETS by james L.Brooks (1997) Well, good comedy, nothing exceptionnal but based on an original theme. Worth seeing it just to confirm our inward idea that Jack Nicholson is just a freak....More seriously, the way the scenarist and the director deals with this delicate subject, namely mental condition and behaviour disorders, without being condescending or sanctimonious really pleased me. Jack Nicholson is definitely freaky but wierdly cute, Helen Hunt smart and simple, as usual, and Greg Kinnear definitely convincing as the gay neighbour. BEAUTIFUL MIND (A) CIDADE DE DEUS / City Of God DOLLS by Takeshi Kitano (2002) Beautiful asian film by one of the master of the genre. Images and lightening to please your eyes, themes and questions arisen to make them cry...As most of asian films, there's very few dialogues in Dolls and the characters are not what we can call demonstrative, and consequently i guess that it can not be always easy to appreciate for the non-amateurs. though, for those who are into it or at least not against it, Kitano is gonna bring you along in a very poetic experience, tiggling your deepest feelings and gently rocking your nurturing questions to move you and make you think. I specially liked the idea of "the bound beggars", the girl dream, and the ending. DONNIE DARKO ENNUI (L') CAST AWAY FILLE SUR LE PONT (LA) / Girl On The Bridge. GIFT (THE) GREEN MILE (THE) HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY (THE) MEMENTO METROLAND by Philip Saville (1998) Very weird film....sepia colours, old fashion clothes and haircuts, 30cm-longed joints, or a married suburbian guy (Christian Bale) questionning his current life in comparison with his former bohemian life in Paris. The film itself was alright, the direction a bit conventional but tolerable, but i personally really enjoyed it. I admit that this opinion is totally biased, as i think that it particularly touched me as a foreigner. The contrast between English mentality and the French one is really acurate, and even if the director sometimes goes a bit far with the stereotypes, the overall film and intention remains really good and remakably works. Elsa Zylbertien is half touching, half tremendously sexy as the french liberated woman, and it's a real pleasure to see Christian Bale wearing whiskers again after Velvet Goldmine.
