In November 1941 the Soviet army launched the Tikhvin offensive against the German forces near Leningrad. The objective of the operation was to recapture the Tikhvin-Volkhov railway, known as the October Railroad, and reopen a vital supply line to the beseiged city. The town of Tikhvin had been lost to the 18th Army, part of Heergruppe Nord (Army Group North), on the 9th of November. While the 4th Army attack the town of Tikhvin the 54th Army, under command of Major-General I.I. Fedyu-ninskiy, was responsible for the capture of the railway. To acomplish this task the 54th Army formed a "strike army group" comprising of two Rifle Divisions, one Rifle Brigade and the 124th Tank Brigade.
The Tikvin offensive lasted from the 10th of November until the 30th of December. On the 8th of December Hitler issued a directive to Heergruppe Nord command it to cease offensive activities and to defenend the Volkhov railroad. On the 9th of December the 4th Army captured the town of Tikhvin.
In January 1942 the 2nd Shock Army launched an attack on the Volkhov front. Breaking through the German lines and pushed a corridor 70km deep into enemy territory. The German 18th Army assaulted the cutoff 2nd Shock Army on the 22nd May 1942 and by the the end of June the Russian troops were forced to surrender. General A A Vlasov, commander of the 2nd SA defected to the Nazis and called for the Russian people to rise up against Stalin.
In Panzer Front the player commands three T34/76 tanks, while a T35 tank provides supports. Your mission is to help the Rifle Division attempting to seize a section of the Tikhvin-Volkhov railway. The elements of the 18th Army you are facing are equiped with Panzer III Ausf J tanks, Stug III E assault guns and 50mm Pak 38 antitank guns.
