27 August 1942 Gaytolovo

In September  of 1942 the German 18th Army was reinforced elements of the 11th Army and divisions from other parts of the eastern front in preparation for a new assualt against Leningrad.  The 2nd Strike Army, reformed after being destroyed during the Soviet Winter Offensive,  launched an assault against the 18th Army in an attempt to break the seige of the city.  Known as the "Sinyavsk offensive operation" the 2nd Strike Army attempted to drive from the Volkhov front towards Mga and the Neva river.  The ooperation was launched on the 19th August 1942 and lasted until the 10th of October.  While the Strike Army took heavy casualties and failed to break tke blockade, the operation was able to prevent the offensive against Leningrad.   In the initial stages of the attack the 2nd Stock Army captured the villiage of Gaytolovo.  Located 15km eastnortheast of the city of Mga, the villiage of Gaytolovo lies in the swamps and peat bogs between Lake Ladoga and Sinyavinskye Heights.  During an attempt to recaputure the villiage in September a Tiger I tank became bogged down in one of the swamps and had to be abandoned by it's crew.

The 502nd Heavy Tank Battalion, newly equipped with Tiger I tanks, was rushed to Mga on the 29th August to defend against the 2nd Shock Army's offensive.  These units would fight again over the Sinyavinskye Heights in 1943.

In Panzer Front the player is part of a tank bridage of T34/76 and KV1 tanks supporting the attack of a Rifle Division. The German forces defending Gaytolovo are equipped with Panzer III Ausf J tanks, Stug III Ausf E assault guns, 88mm antitank guns and captured 76mm Russian antitank guns.
