Compound and Collective Nouns
Two or more words that are written as one noun are considered collective.  Collective nouns can be written as seperate words, hyphenated, or as one word.
Nouns that name a group of people, things, or places are collective.
Examples of compound nouns:
seafood
grasshopper
brother-in-law
Iceland
twelve-year-old
New Year's Day
Examples of collective nouns:
group
committee
team
orchestra
herd
union
Example sentences using compound nouns:
1.  Did you see how high that grasshopper jumped?
2.  The
one-year-old was just beginning to walk.
3.  My family is going to
Iceland for the summer.

1.  The herd of buffalo passed over the field.
